Depression, anxiety, stress and coping strategies among family members of patients admitted in intensive care unit in Nigeria

Parent-child communication and educational anxiety: a longitudinal analysis based on the common fate model

BACKGROUND

In the face of family stress and emerging family problems, the transactional model of stress and coping provides new perspectives for solving stress problems in the family. This study integrates it with the common fate model to reveal new paths for coping with educational anxiety problems from the level of parent-child dichotomous interaction in the family environment, aiming to provide some theoretical and practical support for alleviating parents' education anxiety.

METHODS

This study used a combination of interviews and questionnaires to stratify students and their parents from a public junior high school in Jinan City to participate in the study. Data were collected in two time periods (T1, T2; one year apart), and the demographic characteristics of parents and children, parent-child communication quality, education anxiety, and parent-child trust relationship of 495 families were finally analysed by SPSS 27.0.

RESULTS

The results found that (1) based on the Common Fate Model, quality of parent-child communication negatively predicted parents' education anxiety; (2) quality of parent-child communication positively predicted parent-child trust relationship; (3) parent-child trust relationship negatively predicted parents'education anxiety; (4) parent-child trust relationship mediated quality of parent-child communication and education anxiety.

CONCLUSIONS

This study sheds light on research related to stress coping and anxiety relief in the family environment, and provides theoretical and practical support for understanding the interaction between parents and children at the family level, and coping with stressful events together. It implies that future researchers should not only focus on one aspect when coping with and dealing with family problems, but should analyse the family as a whole, including the communication status and parent-child relationship between parents and children.

Neuropsychiatric Outcomes in Intensive Care Unit Survivors

BACKGROUND

Over the last two decades, there has been phenomenal advancement in critical care medicine and patient management. Many patients recover from life-threatening illnesses that they might not have survived a decade ago. Despite a decrease in mortality, these survivors endure long-lasting sequelae like physical, mental, and emotional symptoms.

METHODS

Patients after intensive care unit (ICU) discharge were assessed in a follow-up outpatient department (OPD) clinic for anxiety, stress, and depression. Patients were asked to fill out the questionnaires Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) and Short Form-36 (SF-36) for assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) at 4th, 6th, and 8th months after discharge. ICU data were recorded, including patients' demographics, severity of illness and length of stay, and duration of mechanical ventilation. Patients who failed to follow-up in OPD on designated dates were assessed telephonically.

RESULTS

Depression showed a positive, strong, and moderate correlation between length of stay and mechanical ventilation duration. A positive correlation was found between stress and length of stay and duration of mechanical ventilation. A positive strong correlation was found between anxiety and length of ICU stay, and a moderate positive correlation was found between anxiety and duration of mechanical ventilation. A weak correlation was found between age and neuropsychiatric outcomes.

CONCLUSION

The severity of depression, anxiety, and stress was significantly higher at four months compared to six months. Severity decreased with time. Prolonged ICU stay increased levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. HRQOL improved from four to six months.

Perception of Nurses' Support among Family Members of Hospitalized Patients in A Tertiary Health Facility in South-West, Nigeria

Introduction

Family members of hospitalized patients are often faced with challenges and may experience difficulty in coping without appropriate support. The aim of this study was to assess hospitalized patients' family members' perception of nurses' support.

Methods

A cross-sectional descriptive design was utilized. A total of 138 family members of hospitalized patients in a tertiary health facility were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected with an adopted structured questionnaire. Analyses of data were performed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and multiple regression. The level of significance was set at 0.05 (p < .05. Also, age, gender, and type of family were the predictors of emotional support (R2 = 84, F(6, 131) = 5.92, p < .05.

Results

Twenty-seven qualitative studies were included in the review. A thematic synthesis showed over 100 themes and subthemes across the studies. A cluster analysis revealed positive elements and others that were seen in the studies as a barrier (hindrance) to clinical learning. Positive elements included supportive instructors, close supervision, and belonging (in the team). Unsupportive instructors, a lack of supervision and not being included were seen as a hindrance. Three key overarching themes that could describe a successful placement were revealed as "Preparation," "Welcomed and wanted" and "Supervision experiences". A conceptual model of clinical placement elements conducive to nursing students' learning was developed to enhance understanding of the complexities associated with supervision. The findings and model are presented and discussed.

Conclusion

A significant number of families of hospitalized patients reported poor perception of cognitive, emotional, and overall support from nurses. Adequate staffing is a prerequisite for effective family support. Nurses also need appropriate training in providing family support. The focus of family support training should emphasize practices that nurses can use in everyday interactions with patients and family members.

Anxiety and Coping Stress Strategies in Researchers During COVID-19 Pandemic

The current COVID-19 pandemic has affected the whole world, leading to changes in one's personal and working life. Researchers have undergone extensive changes in their roles, mainly in the area of health care, with research into the virus now the priority.

Aim

To assess the anxiety, depression, stress, fears, and coping strategies of Portuguese researchers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants and Methods

A total of 243 researchers, with an average age of 37.9 ± 9.6, participated in an online questionnaire. The study was performed between 1 June 2021 and 11 August 2021. The questionnaire included depression, anxiety, and stress (DASS-21), fear of COVID-19 scale (FCV-19S), and coping inventory for stressful situations (CISS).

Results

The findings suggest being female and younger seem to be related to more significant fears. Singles and younger researchers showed higher values of stress, depression, and anxiety. Research areas, such as medical and health sciences, presented higher levels in the DASS-21 depression and stress scale (p < 0.05). Also, the results showed a moderate or moderate strong significant positive linear relationship between the scales (p < 0.001): DASS-21 stress, DASS-21 anxiety, and DASS-21 depression (r > 0.70); CISS-21 emotional-oriented with DASS-21 stress (r = 0.683), DASS-21 depression (r = 0.622), and DASS-21 anxiety (r = 0.557); and emotional fear and cognitive fear (r = 0.652).

Conclusion

The findings of this study support the growing concern for the psychological well-being of researchers and the need for intervention with more extensive and diverse studies.

Anxiety, social support and satisfaction of patients' families in intensive care units: A descriptive-correlational study

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

This study was conducted with family members of patients' in the intensive care unit (ICU) to identify their anxiety level, social support and satisfaction with the ICU.

BACKGROUND

Admission of critical patients to the ICU usually involves the participation of family members.

DESIGN

A descriptive-correlational design was used and reported according to the STROBE checklist.

METHODS

The sample consisted of 250 family members in ICUs in a city of Turkey. Data were collected by the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Family Satisfaction in the Intensive Care Unit scale.

RESULTS

A negative correlation was found between family satisfaction of the ICU and state anxiety (r = -0.349, p < 0.001), and a negative relationship between the satisfaction of the ICU and trait anxiety of the participants (r = -0.151, p < 0.05). There was a significant relationship between the state anxiety level (Adjusted R² = 0.080, F = 8.247, p < 0.001), trait anxiety level (Adjusted R² = 0.185, F = 19.821, p < 0.001), the perceived social support (Adjusted R² = 0.094, F = 9.640, p < 0.001) and satisfaction (Adjusted R² = 0.013, F = 4.161, p < 0.001) of family members and their sociodemographic characteristics.

CONCLUSIONS

The study concluded that anxiety levels of relatives of the families were high, their social support and satisfaction with the intensive care unit were at a moderate level. There was a correlation between anxiety levels, satisfaction with the intensive care unit, and the perceived social support of families.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Holistic care for the psychosocial needs of families who have a member in the ICU should be planned to increase satisfaction. Nurses should observe families closely for anxiety, allow them to ask questions and include them in the care of their family member.
