Adhesive Composite Microspheres with Dual Antibacterial Strategies for Infected Wound Healing

Skin damage and infection pose a severe challenge to human health. Construction of a novel versatile dressing with good anti-infection and healing-promoting abilities is greatly expected. In this paper, nature-source-based composite microspheres with dual antibacterial mechanisms and bioadhesive features by microfluidics electrospray for infected wound healing is developed. The microspheres enable sustained release of copper ions, which not only show long-term antibacterial properties, but also play important role in wound-healing-related angiogenesis. Additionally, the microspheres are coated with polydopamine via self-polymerization, which renders the microspheres adhesive to the wound surface, and further enhance the antibacterial ability through photothermal energy conversion. Based on the dual antibacterial strategies provided by copper ions and polydopamine as well as the bioadhesive property, the composite microspheres exhibit excellent anti-infection and wound healing performances in a rat wound model. These results, along with the nature-source-based composition and biocompatibility, indicate the great potential of the microspheres in clinical wound repair.

Montmorillonite-Rifampicin Nanohybrid for pH-Responsive Release of the Tuberculostatic

The present work describes the development of a hybrid and pH-responsive system for rifampicin using the clay mineral 'montmorillonite' as a nanocarrier. The influence of operational variables on the drug incorporation process was evaluated using 2⁴ factorial designs. Under optimized conditions, the experiment allowed an incorporated drug dose equivalent to 98.60 ± 1.21 mg/g. Hybrid systems were characterized by different characterization techniques (FTIR, XRD, TGA, DSC, and SEM) to elucidate the mechanism of interaction between the compounds used. Through in vitro release studies, it was possible to verify the efficacy of the pH-dependent system obtained, with approximately 70% of the drug released after sixteen hours in simulated intestinal fluid. The adjustment of the experimental release data to the theoretical model of Higuchi and Korsmeyer-Peppas indicated that the release of rifampicin occurs in a prolonged form from montmorillonite. Elucidation of the interactions between the drug and this raw clay reinforces its viability as a novel carrier to develop an anti-TB/clay hybrid system with good physical and chemical stability.

Synthesis of multi-organo-functionalized fibrous silica KCC-1 for highly efficient adsorption of acid fuchsine and acid orange II from aqueous solution

Multi-functionalized fibrous silica KCC-1 (MF-KCC-1) bearing amine, tetrasulfide, and thiol groups was synthesized via a post-functionalization method and fully characterized by several methods such as FTIR, FESEM, EDX-Mapping, TEM, and N₂ adsorption-desorption techniques. Due to abundant surface functional groups, accessible active adsorption sites, high surface area (572 m² g^-1), large pore volume (0.98 cm³ g^-1), and unique fibrous structure, mesoporous MF-KCC-1 was used as a potential adsorbent for the uptake of acid fuchsine (AF) and acid orange II (AO) from water. Different adsorption factors such as pH of the dye solution, the amount of adsorbent, initial dye concentration, and contact time, affecting the uptake process were optimized and isotherm and kinetic studies were conducted to find the possible mechanism involved in the process. For both AF and AO dyes, the Langmuir isotherm model and the PFO kinetic model show the most agreement with the experimental data. According to the Langmuir isotherm, the calculated maximum adsorption capacity for AF and AO were found to be 574.5 mg g^-1 and 605.9 mg g^-1, respectively, surpassing most adsorption capacities reported until now which is indicative of the high potential of mesoporous MF-KCC-1 as an adsorbent for removal applications.
