Abstract
A self-synthesized hyperbranched sulfuretted polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin (PCDME) resin was developed to enhance high-temperature soybean meal (HSM) protein-based adhesives. In PCDME-modified HSM adhesives, a multi-crosslinked network is built based on ring-opening reactions, disulfide bond rearrangement, electrostatic interactions, and hydrogen bonding between the active groups in PCDME resins and HSM proteins. This results in the HSM-based adhesive with significantly enhanced internal cohesion, thermal stability, moisture resistance and bonding strength. HSM/PCDME-25 % had excellent dry and wet bond strengths of 2.23 MPa and 1.52 MPa, increasing by 46 % and 322 %, respectively, over the control and increasing toughness (work of adhesion) by 150 %. This PCDME-modified protein-based adhesives also have a satisfactory solid content and a good adhesion of various substrates.

Abstract
Sustainable and environment friendly natural-based adhesive has been considered as an optimum alternative of industrial adhesive which is non-renewable and harmful to health. Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer in nature and has potential applications in the field of adhesives. However, the inherent hydrophilic nature of cellulose-based adhesive significantly challenges its use in high humidity environments. In this paper, a highly hydrophobic and anti-swelling cellulose-based adhesive was prepared by epoxy modification of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The simultaneous enhancement of adhesive and cohesive properties is achieved through the reaction of epoxy groups with the hydroxyl groups from the wood and adhesive during the hot-pressing process. Prepared adhesive has excellent properties in extremely humid environments. The dry bonding strength of the prepared adhesive reached 6.02 ± 0.26 MPa, while the wet bonding strength was 4.78 ± 0.21 MPa after immersed in water at 63 °C for 3 h. Furthermore, the bonding strength remained largely stable in 90 % atmospheric humidity. The adhesive has a certain universality, which can bond to substrates such as aluminium, iron, and glass. This study presents an innovative approach to the manufacturing of cellulose-based adhesive with enhanced bonding performance and exceptional water resistance.

Abstract
Soy protein adhesives (SPI) exhibit broad prospects in substituting aldehyde-based resin due to the economic and environmental-friendly characteristics, but still face a challenge because of the dissatisfied bonding strength and terrible water resistance. Herein, prompted by organic-inorganic hierarchy, a multifunctional and novel soy protein adhesive (SPI-RAE-TiO2) consisting of rosin acid emulsion (RAE) and TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2) were proposed. In comparison with original SPI, the dry and wet shear strengths of modified adhesive reached 2.01 and 1.21 MPa, respectively, which were increased by 130 % and 200 %. Furthermore, SPI-6RAE-0.5TiO2 was selected as the best proportion via the method of response surface methodology (RSM). What's more, SPI-6RAE-0.5TiO2 adhesive demonstrated prominent coating performance in both dry and wet surface conditions. Meanwhile, SPI-6RAE-0.5TiO2 adhesive possessed excellent mildew resistance and antibacterial ability with Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), reflecting the antibacterial rates 97.71 % and 98.16 %, respectively. In addition, SPI-6RAE-0.5TiO2 adhesive also exhibited the outstanding green features such as the reduction of formaldehyde pollution and greenhouse effect through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Thus, this work provided a novel and functional approach to design multifunctional, superior-property and low-carbon footprint soy protein adhesive.

Abstract
Given the severe protein denaturation and self-aggregation during the high-temperature desolubilization, denatured soy meal (DSM) is limited by its low reactivity, high viscosity, and poor water solubility. Preparing low-cost and high-performance adhesives with DSM as the key feedstock is still challenging. Herein, this study reveals a double-enzyme co-activation method targeting DSM with the glycosidic bonds in protein-carbohydrate complexes and partial amide bonds in protein, increasing the protein dispersion index from 10.2 % to 75.1 % improves the reactivity of DSM. The green crosslinker transglutaminase (TGase) constructs a robust adhesive isopeptide bond network with high water-resistant bonding strength comparable to chemical crosslinkers. The adhesive has demonstrated high dry/wet shear strength (2.56 and 0.93 MPa) for plywood. After molecular recombination by enzyme strategy, the adhesive had the proper viscosity, high reactivity, and strong water resistance. This research showcases a novel perspective on developing a DSM-based adhesive and blazes new avenues for changes in protein structural function and adhesive performance.

Abstract
Current petrochemical-based adhesives adversely affect the environment through substantial volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions during production, contributing to air pollution and climate change. In contrast, vegetable oils extracted from bio-resources provide a compelling alternative owing to their renewability, abundance, and compatibility with adhesive formulation chemistry. This review aimed to critically examine and synthesize the existing scholarly literature on environmentally friendly, sustainable, and high-performance polyurethane adhesives (PUAs) developed from vegetable oils. The use of PUAs derived from vegetable oils promises to provide a long-term replacement while simultaneously maintaining or improving adhesive properties. This quality renders these adhesives appropriate for widespread use in various sectors, including construction, automotive manufacturing, packaging, textile, and footwear industries. This review intended to perform a comprehensive assessment and integration of the existing research, thereby identifying the raw materials, strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in knowledge concerning vegetable oil-based PUAs. In doing so, it responded to these gaps and proposes potential avenues for future research. Therefore, this review accomplishes more than merely evaluating the existing research; it fosters the advancement of greener PUA technologies by identifying areas for improvement and innovation towards more sustainable industrial practices by showcasing vegetable oil-based PUAs as viable, high-performance alternatives to their petroleum-based counterparts.

Abstract
In the context of sustainable development, research on a biomass-based adhesive without chemical modification as a substitute for petroleum-based adhesive is now crucial. It turns out to be challenging to guarantee a simple and sustainable method to produce high-quality adhesives and subsequently manufacture multifunctional composites. Herein, the inherent properties of cellulose were exploited to generate an adhesive based on a cellulose aqueous solution. The adhesion is simple to prepare structurally and functionally complex materials in a single process. Cellulose-based daily necessities including straws, bags, and cups were prepared by adhering cellulose films, and smart devices like actuators and supercapacitors assembled by adhering hydrogels were also demonstrated. In addition, the composite boards bonded with natural biomass wastes, such as wood chips, displayed significantly stronger mechanical properties than the natural wood or commercial composite boards. Cellulose aqueous adhesives provide a straightforward, feasible, renewable, and inventive bonding technique for material shaping and the creation of multipurpose devices.

Abstract
The wood industry faces challenges in producing eco-friendly, high-performance, and formaldehyde-free adhesives. In this study, carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber (XSBR) was blended with polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin (PAE) resin, and a controlled amount of CaCO3 powder was incorporated to create an adhesive with exceptional strength. The resulting three-layer plywood demonstrated remarkable dry and wet shear strengths of 3.09 and 2.36 MPa, respectively, and of 2.27 MPa after boiling water tests, comparable to that of phenolic resins. Additionally, the adhesive exhibited strong adhesion across various materials including glass, metal, etc. This exceptional performance was due to two primary factors: (1) the high-density chemical cross-linking reaction and the physical entanglement between XSBR and PAE; (2) the organic-inorganic hybrid involving metal ion complexation developed by CaCO3, which fostered molecular chain connections and enhanced the adhesive-material interface. These findings offer valuable references for further research in the field of wood adhesives.

Abstract
Developing multifunctional adhesives with exceptional cold-pressing strength, water resistance, toughness, and mildew resistance remains challenging. Herein, inspired by oysters, a multifunctional organic-inorganic hybrid soybean meal (SM)-based adhesive was fabricated by incorporating amino-modified carbon dots functionalized silica nanoparticles (CDs@SiO2) and dialdehyde chitosan (DCS) into SM matrix. DCS effectively enhanced the interface interactions of organic-inorganic phases and the rigid nanofillers CDs@SiO2 uniformly dispersed in the SM matrix, which provided energy dissipation to improve the adhesive's toughness. Owing to the stiff skeleton structure and enhanced crosslinking density, the crosslinker-modified SM (MSM)/DCS/CDs@SiO2-2 wood adhesive exhibited outstanding cold-pressing strength (0.74 MPa), wet shear strength (1.36 MPa), and long-term water resistance (49 d). Additionally, the resultant adhesive showed superior antimildew and antibacterial properties benefiting from the introduction of DCS. Intriguingly, the fluorescent properties endowed by carbon dots further broadened the application of adhesives for realizing security testing. This study opens a new pathway for the synthesis of multifunctional biomass adhesives in industrial and household applications.

Abstract
This paper presents a binary reinforcement system of polyamide polyamine epichlorohydrin with nanocellulose (PAE-NC) for effectively modification of the reclaimed fibres for paper production, and based on the improvement of physical and mechanical properties of cellulosic fibres together with PAE-NC self-crosslinking networks, the strengthening mechanisms of recycled papers are examined. The PAE-NC binary system was applied directly to old corrugated container (OCC) and softwood bleached kraft pulp (SWBKP), and handsheets are prepared with varying amounts of PAE/NC/PAE-NC, namely 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 wt% (dry pulp). The results showed that the studied additives improved the performance of recycled fibres, whether SWBKP or OCC pulp, and handsheets in solely or combined mechanisms except for the air permeability of the handsheets. The treatment of PAE-NC combination was significantly more effective than those of PAE or NC alone for both OCC and SWBKP, although the combined PAE-NC treatment results in better performance enhancement for OCC than SWBKP handsheets, and the NC alone is more effective than PAE for SWBKP recycled paper and conversely for OCC recycled paper. SEM observations further confirmed that the combined PAE-NC addition treatment imparted a relatively uniform surface structure to the handsheet.
