Composite hydrogel based on alginate-g-poly(acrylamide)/carbon nanotubes for solid phase extraction of metals from corn cereal samples

Preparation of a sustainable magnetic sorbent for the extraction and preconcentration of progestogens in natural water samples

A film composed of agarose and graphene (G) and magnetic nanoparticles (G-MNPs) is proposed as a sorbent for the extraction and determination of medroxyprogesterone (MED), levonorgestrel (LEV), norethisterone (NOR) and progesterone (PRO) in natural water samples. Both the preparation of the film and the extraction procedure were optimized. The optimal extraction parameters were as follows: isopropyl alcohol as activation solvent, sample pH value of 3.0, extraction time of 30 min, 1.00 mL of acetonitrile as eluent, elution time of 5 min and sample volume of 100.00 mL. HPLC with photodiode array detector was used for the separation and determination. The method presented a linear range between 2.50 and 75.0 μg L-1 for all analytes, and the LODs were between 1.40 and 1.80 μg L-1. The method was applied to natural water samples, obtaining satisfactory recovery values (75-111 %). In conclusion, for the immobilization of the G-MNPs, agarose was used, which is a non-toxic, renewable and biodegradable material. The G-MNPs-agarose film was reused up to 70 times, without losing its extraction capacity significantly and presenting excellent sorbent properties, which allow the extraction and preconcentration of the progestogens under study.

Design of smart temperature-sensitive terpolymeric hydrogel for multi-applications in liquid chromatography

Hydrogels with a unique three-dimensional network structure have been widely used in a variety of fields. However, hydrogels are prone to swelling under water-rich conditions, which severely limits their application in liquid chromatography. Therefore, producing a hydrogel with reliable performance and good mechanical property is essential. Smart temperature-sensitive chromatographic packings have attracted extensive attentions in recent years. In this work, sodium 4-styrenesulfonate and 1-octadecene were introduced into the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel to improve mechanical property and separation performance. As a consequence, a smart temperature-sensitive terpolymeric hydrogel modified silica stationary phase (ION-hydrogel@SiO2) was synthesized for multimode liquid chromatographic separation. It was found that this new ION-hydrogel@SiO2 column exhibited excellent chromatographic separation ability for a wide range of analytes. To a certain extent, this new column has a higher chromatographic separation efficiency compared to the commercial C18 column and XAmide column. Moreover, the use of low proportion of organic phase in chromatographic separation is conducive to the realization of green chromatography. By investigating the chromatographic separation mechanism, it has been demonstrated that the hydrogen bonding interaction is primarily responsible for the temperature-sensitive behavior of the hydrogel. Finally, the ION-hydrogel@SiO2 column was used for the determination of pyridoxine in the commercially available tablet samples. In conclusion, this study presents a feasible idea for the development of novel copolymer hydrogels as liquid chromatographic stationary phases.

Fluorescent composite beads: An advanced tool for environmental monitoring and harmful pollutants removal from water

The quality and safety of water sources have been significantly impacted by various pollutants, including trace elements. To address this concern, this study utilized composite beads made of alginate and carbon quantum dots (CDs) for detecting and removing As(III) and Se(IV) ions in tap water. Fluorescent CDs were hydrothermally synthesized and incorporated into an alginate-Ca2+ matrix through a straightforward procedure. Characterization analyses revealed distinct properties of the composite beads, containing varying amounts of CDs, compared to the pristine beads. Optimal adsorption parameters (30 mg of adsorbent, 10 mg/L of initial pollutant concentration, 35 °C, and 180 min of contact time) for the beads containing 30 w/w-% of CDs (Alg@CDs30) were determined through a fractional factorial design. These composite beads exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for both metals, achieving a removal rate of 94.5% for As(III) and 98.0% for Se(IV) in tap water. Kinetic and isothermal analyses indicated that the adsorption of both metals on Alg@CDs30 involves a combination of chemisorption and diffusion processes. Recycling experiments demonstrated that the composite beads could be reused up to 20 times without a noticeable loss of adsorption efficiency. Regarding the sensing property, our experiments revealed a significant reduction in the fluorescence emission intensity of Alg@CDs30 upon interaction with As(III) and Se(IV), confirming its ability to detect both ions in tap water, with limits of detection (LOD) of 2.6 ± 0.5 μg/L for As(III) and 1.1 ± 0.2 μg/L for Se(IV). The alginate-Ca2+ matrix s contributed to the stability of the CDs' fluorescence. These results confirm the potential of Alg@CDs beads as effective tools for the simultaneous monitoring and removal of hazardous metal ions from real water samples.
