Polylactic acid aerogel with antibacterial, early warning and heat preservation functions applied to fresh trays

Fresh trays could not provide efficient protection and detection to the fresh foods during the transportation and sale processes due to its less functions. To address these challenges, one type of multifunctional fresh tray with antibacterial and detection properties was fabricated by the combining of two types of functionalized polylactic acid (PLA) aerogels, PLA/carvacrol (PLA/CA) aerogel and PLA-red cabbage anthocyanin (PLA-RCA) aerogel. The PLA/CA aerogel prepared by in situ encapsulation strategy exhibits a strong antioxidant effect with the free radical clearance rate of 69.57 % at 12 h, and a significant inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli due to the existence of CA. The PLA- RCA aerogel prepared via the solute self-assembly strategy demonstrates a detection property due to the existence of RCA. Meanwhile, the microfiber structure of PLA aerogel provided more reaction sites for RCA which results in a fast response to ammonia in 5 s. Therefore, the novel fresh tray could not only extend the shelf life of food but also monitor the status of food in real time. Overall, the preparation of the novel fresh tray by the functionalization of PLA aerogel can provide a feasible solution for the storage and detection of fresh food.

Ionic Liquid-Based Grapeseed Oil Emulsion for Enhanced Anti-Wrinkle Treatment

OBJECTIVES

To address the poor efficacy and percutaneous penetration of grape seed oil, ionic liquids and nanotechnology were combined to prepare a grape seed oil emulsion.

METHODS

A novel Menthol-CoQ10 ionic liquid and ionic liquid based grapeseed oil emulsion were prepared and confirmed.

RESULTS

The average size of the grapeseed oil emulsion was 218 nm, and its zeta potential was -33.5 mV. The ionic liquid-based grape seed oil emulsion exhibited a transdermal penetration effect 4.63-fold higher than that of ordinary grape seed oil emulsion. Ionic liquid also displayed enhanced efficiency both in vitro and in vivo. It significantly inhibited the production of DPPH free radicals and tyrosinase, inhibited melanin and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) produced by cells, and promoted type I collagen expression in fibroblasts. After 28 days of continuous use, the grapeseed oil emulsion improved the water content of the stratum corneum and the rate of transepidermal water loss, enhanced the firmness and elasticity of the skin, and significantly improved the total number and length of under-eye lines, tail lines, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines on the face.

CONCLUSIONS

Menthol-CoQ10 ionic liquid is a promising functional excipient for both transdermal delivery increase and efficient enhancement. Ionic liquid and nanotechnology for grape seed oil facial mask displayed significantly enhanced efficacy and permeability.

Fluid Unidirectional Transport Induced by Structure and Ambient Elements across Porous Materials: From Principles to Applications

Spontaneous or nonspontaneous unidirectional fluid transport across multidimension can occur under specific structural designs and ambient elements for porous materials. While existing reviews have extensively summarized unidirectional fluid transport on surfaces, there is an absence of literature summarizing fluid's unidirectional transport across porous materials. This review introduces wetting phenomena observed on natural biological surfaces or porous structures. Subsequently, it offers an overview of diverse principles and potential applications in this field, emphasizing various physical and chemical structural designs (surface energy, capillary size, topographic curvature) and ambient elements (underwater, under oil, pressure, and solar energy). Applications encompass moisture-wicking fabric, sensors, skincare, fog collection, oil-water separation, electrochemistry, liquid-based gating, and solar evaporators. Additionally, significant principles and formulas from various studies are compelled to offer readers valuable references. Simultaneously, potential advantages and challenges are critically assessed in these applications and the perspectives are presented.

Microfluidic Sensing Textile for Continuous Monitoring of Sweat Glucose at Rest

Wearable sweat sensors have received considerable attention due to their great potential for noninvasive continuous monitoring of an individual's health status applications. However, the low secretion rate and fast evaporation of sweat pose challenges in collecting sweat from sedentary individuals for noninvasive analysis of body physiology. Here, we demonstrate wearable textiles for continuous monitoring of sweat at rest using the combination of a heating element and a microfluidic channel to increase localized skin sweat secretion rates and combat sweat evaporation, enabling accurate and stable monitoring of trace amounts of sweat. The Janus sensing yarns with a glucose sensing sensitivity of 36.57 mA cm-2 mM-1 are embroidered into the superhydrophobic heated textile to collect sweat directionally, resulting in improved sweat collection efficiency of up to 96 and 75% retention. The device also maintains a highly durable sensing performance, even in dynamic deformation, recycling, and washing. The microfluidic sensing textile can be further designed into a wireless sensing system that enables sedentary-compatible sweat analysis for the continuous, real-time monitoring of body glucose levels at rest.
