Abstract
Background/Objectives: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused post-acute sequelae, especially for people with pre-existing conditions, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), which may impact the cardiovascular system. Yet, despite the preliminary description of the general population's long-COVID-19 consequences, data on CKD patients is scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the longitudinal effects of COVID-19 on echocardiographic parameters of cardiac function and on cardiac biomarkers in patients with CKD. Methods: A total of 163 patients were included in this observational prospective trial (listed under NCT05125913 code): 88 in the COVID-19 group and 75 in the control group. The serial echocardiographic characteristics in patients who survived beyond one year, focused on left and right ventricular systolic function, together with cardiac biomarkers evolution, were compared between the two groups. Results: At baseline, there were no significant differences in left ventricular (LV) function parameters, except for a higher Tei Index in the COVID-19 group (p < 0.01). Right ventricular (RV) systolic dysfunction was more frequent in the COVID-19 group, with worse fractional area change (FAC) (p = 0.01), RV free wall longitudinal strain (RVFWLS) (p = 0.01), and RV Tei Index (p = 0.01). Over time, the control group showed a decline in LV ejection fraction (EF), while the COVID-19 group slightly improved. RV global systolic function was better preserved in the COVID-19 group. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that demonstrates a statistically significant increase in LAVi in patients with COVID-19. Conclusions: Prior COVID-19 infection influenced the trajectory of LV and RV function in CKD patients over 12 months, suggesting potential transient myocardial adaptations. While overall cardiac function did not differ significantly between groups, COVID-19 survivors exhibited better preservation of some ventricular function parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a global pandemic in 2019. It remains uncertain to what extent COVID-19 effects the heart in heathy individuals. To evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 on cardiac structure and function in middle-aged and older individuals. METHODS A single-centre prospective observational study enroled a total of 124 participants (84 with history of COVID-19 [COVID-19 group] and 40 without a history of COVID-19 [non-COVID group]). All participants underwent echocardiography with speckle tracking to assess cardiac structure and function at rest and during peak exercise. RESULTS There were no differences in left and right ventricular diastolic function (p ≥ 0.05) between the COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 groups. Participants in COVID-19 group demonstrated higher left ventricular mass (130 ± 39.8 vs. 113 ± 27.2 g, p = 0.008) and relative wall thickness (0.38 ± 0.07 vs. 0.36 ± 0.13, p = 0.049). Left ventricular global longitudinal strain was reduced in the COVID-19 group at rest and at peak-exercise (rest: 18.3 ± 2.01 vs. 19.3 ± 1.53%, p = 0.004; peak exercise: 19.1 ± 2.20 vs. 21.0 ± 1.58%, p ≤ 0.001). However, no difference was seen in resting left ventricular ejection fraction (58 ± 2.89 vs. 59 ± 2.51%, p = 0.565) between groups. Right ventricular fractional area change was reduced in the COVID-19 group (p = 0.012). CONCLUSION Cardiac structural and functional remodelling was observed in middle-aged and older otherwise healthy individuals with a history of COVID-19.

Abstract
Impaired cardiac function has been described as a frequent complication of COVID-19-related pneumonia. To investigate possible underlying mechanisms, we represented the cardiovascular system by means of a lumped-parameter 0D mathematical model. The model was calibrated using clinical data, recorded in 58 patients hospitalized for COVID-19-related pneumonia, to make it patient-specific and to compute model outputs of clinical interest related to the cardiocirculatory system. We assessed, for each patient with a successful calibration, the statistical reliability of model outputs estimating the uncertainty intervals. Then, we performed a statistical analysis to compare healthy ranges and mean values (over patients) of reliable model outputs to determine which were significantly altered in COVID-19-related pneumonia. Our results showed significant increases in right ventricular systolic pressure, diastolic and mean pulmonary arterial pressure, and capillary wedge pressure. Instead, physical quantities related to the systemic circulation were not significantly altered. Remarkably, statistical analyses made on raw clinical data, without the support of a mathematical model, were unable to detect the effects of COVID-19-related pneumonia in pulmonary circulation, thus suggesting that the use of a calibrated 0D mathematical model to describe the cardiocirculatory system is an effective tool to investigate the impairments of the cardiocirculatory system associated with COVID-19.

Abstract
Aim Social media (SoMe) are emerging as important tools for research dissemination. Twitter/X promotion has been shown to increase citation rates in well-established journals. We aimed to test the effect of a SoMe promotion strategy on the Mendeley reader counts, the Altmetric Attention Score and the number of citations in an upcoming open-access journal. Methods The #TweetTheJournal study is a randomized, controlled study. Articles published in seven subsequent issues of the International Journal of Cardiology Heart & Vasculature (April 2021-April 2022) were randomized to a Twitter/X promotion arm (articles were posted four times) and to a control arm (without active posting). Articles with accompanied editorials were excluded. Primary endpoint of the study was Mendeley reader count, secondary endpoints were Altmetric Attention Score and number of citations. Follow-up was one year. Results SoMe promotion of articles showed no statistically significant difference in Mendeley reader counts or number of citations at one year follow up. SoMe promotion resulted in a statistically significant higher Altmetric Attention Score in the intervention compared to the control group (RR 1.604, 95 % CI 1.024-2.511, p = 0.039). In the overall group, Altmetric Attention Score showed a correlation with Mendeley reader counts (Spearman's ρ = 0.202, p = 0.010) and Mendeley reader counts correlated significantly with number of citations (Spearman's ρ = 0.372, p < 0.001). Conclusion A dedicated SoMe promotion strategy did not result in statistically significant differences in early impact indicators as the Mendeley reader count in a upcoming journal, but increased the Altmetric Attention Score.

Abstract
Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) might be associated with cardiac injury as a part of multisystem affection in response to cytokine storms. However, left ventricular (LV) function appears preserved in most of the cases, whereas subtle LV dysfunction might happen in others. Hence, we tried to detect subtle LV dysfunction in patients with COVID-19 using global longitudinal strain (GLS). Patients and Methods We performed a single-center observational study on 90 stable patients who were recently recovered from mild to moderate COVID-19 infections. A transthoracic echocardiographic examination was done for all patients, and GLS assessment was used as an indicator of LV function. Results The population age ranged from 27 to 66 years, and the majority of patients were males (54, 73.3%). Besides, 46.7% of the included patients were smokers, 33.3% had hypertension, and 23.3% were diabetics. All the patients had normal LV internal dimensions and ejection fractions. However, 33.3% of them had subclinical LV dysfunction as expressed by reduced GLS. There was no statistically significant correlation between GLS and age, gender, or other risk factors, whereas troponin and C-reactive protein significantly correlated with GLS. Conclusions Recovered patients from recent mild to moderate COVID-19 infections might show subtle LV dysfunction as manifested by reduced GLS.

Abstract
Cardiac consequences of Covid-19 infection have been mentioned in various studies as a serious risk factor for in-hospital mortality. However, the existence of residual cardiac dysfunction after the acute phase is seldom investigated especially in people without a history of specific medical disease. One hundred health care workers with positive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test underwent comprehensive 2D and 3D echocardiography six to eight weeks after infection. Patients were classified into Mild, Moderate, and Severe groups based on their clinical characteristics of covid-19 infection, and all echocardiographic parameters were compared between the three groups. Left ventricular (LV) stroke volume index was reduced in all groups compared to normal ranges and was more prominent in the severe group (P-value < 0.05). 3D-derived LV global longitudinal strain (GLS) was significantly lower in the severe group in comparison to the mild group (- 19.3 ± 1 Vs. - 22.2 ± 2, P-value < 0.001) and correlated with highly sensitive CRP level at the acute phase. Left atrial (LA) strains, including LA peak strain, LA contraction strain, and LA reservoir strain, were considerably higher and LA volume index was significantly lower in the clinically severe covid patients. Analysis based on the extent of lung involvement showed significantly increased 3D-derived right ventricular volumes in patients who experienced severe pneumonia despite normalized strains. Conclusion: subclinical LV dysfunction as reduced stroke volume index and GLS exists in the early recovery phase of normal individuals with severe course of covid-19. LA function indicated by LA strains paradoxically increases in severe covid-19 infection in this phase.

Abstract
Speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) has become an established, widely available diagnostic method in the past few years, making its value clear in cases of COVID-19 and the further course of the disease, including post-COVID syndrome. Since the beginning of the pandemic, many studies have been published on the use of STE in this condition, enabling, on the one hand, a better understanding of myocardial involvement in COVID-19 and, on the other, a better identification of risk to patients, although some questions remain unanswered in regard to specific pathomechanisms, especially in post-COVID patients. This review takes a closer look at current findings and potential future developments by summarising the extant data on the use of STE, with a focus on left and right ventricular longitudinal strain.

Abstract
(1) Background: Emerging data regarding patients recovered from COVID-19 are reported in the literature, but cardiac sequelae have not yet been clarified. To quickly detect any cardiac involvement at follow-up, the aims of the research were to identify: elements at admission predisposing subclinical myocardial injury at follow up; the relationship between subclinical myocardial injury and multiparametric evaluation at follow-up; and subclinical myocardial injury longitudinal evolution. (2) Methods and Results: A total of 229 consecutive patients hospitalised for moderate to severe COVID-19 pneumonia were initially enrolled, of which 225 were available for follow-up. All patients underwent a first follow-up visit, which included a clinical evaluation, a laboratory test, echocardiography, a six-minute walking test (6MWT), and a pulmonary functional test. Of the 225 patients, 43 (19%) underwent a second follow-up visit. The median time to the first follow-up after discharge was 5 months, and the median time to the second follow-up after discharge was 12 months. Left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LVGLS) and right ventricular free wall strain (RVFWS) were reduced in 36% (n = 81) and 7.2% (n = 16) of the patients, respectively, at first the follow-up visit. LVGLS impairment showed correlations with patients of male gender (p 0.008, OR 2.32 (95% CI 1.24-4.42)), the presence of at least one cardiovascular risk factor (p < 0.001, OR 6.44 (95% CI 3.07-14.9)), and final oxygen saturation (p 0.002, OR 0.99 (95% CI 0.98-1)) for the 6MWTs. Subclinical myocardial dysfunction had not significantly improved at the 12-month follow-ups. (3) Conclusions: in patients recovered from COVID-19 pneumonia, left ventricular subclinical myocardial injury was related to cardiovascular risk factors and appeared stable during follow-up.

Abstract
Background Coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) is known to affect the heart and is associated with a pro-inflammatory state. Most studies to date have focused on clinically sick subjects. Here, we report cardiac and proinflammatory biomarkers levels in ambulatory young adults with asymptomatic or mild COVID-19 infection compared to those without infection 4-8 weeks after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) testing. Methods 131 asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic subjects were enrolled following testing for SARS-COV-2. Fifty subjects tested negative, and 81 subjects tested positive. Serum samples were collected for measurement of C-reactive protein, ferritin, interleukin-6, NT-pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, and cardiac troponin 28-55 days after SARS-COV-2 RT-PCR testing. Results Biomarker levels trended higher in SARS-COV-2-positive vs negative subjects, but differences in biomarker levels or proportion of subjects with elevated biomarkers were not statistically significant with respect to SARS-COV-2 status. Among individuals with ≥ 1 comorbidity, odds of elevated CRP were greater compared to individuals without any comorbidities (odds ratio [OR] = 2.90); this effect size was increased 1.4-fold among SARS-COV-2-positive subjects (OR = 4.03). Similarly, NT-pro-BNP was associated with CVD, with the strongest association in COVID-positive individuals (OR = 16.9). Conclusions In a relatively young, healthy adult population, mild COVID-19 infection was associated with mild elevations in cardiac and proinflammatory biomarkers within 4-8 weeks of mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 infection in individuals with preexisting comorbidities, but not among individuals without comorbidities. For the general population of young adults, we did not find evidence of elevation of cardiac or proinflammatory biomarkers 4-8 weeks after COVID-19 infection.Clinical Perspective: This is a characterization of cardiac and proinflammatory biomarkers in ambulatory subjects following asymptomatic or mild COVID-19 infection. Young, ambulatory individuals did not have cardiac and proinflammatory biomarker elevation 4-8 weeks after mild COVID-19 infection. However, COVID-19 infection was associated with biomarker elevations in select individuals with comorbidities.Clinical study number: H-47423.

Abstract
Cardiac involvement has been described during the course of SARS-CoV-2 disease (COVID-19), with different manifestations. Several series have reported only increased cardiac troponin without ventricular dysfunction, others the acute development of left or right ventricular dysfunction, and others myocarditis. Ventricular dysfunction can be of varying degrees and may recover completely in some cases. Generally, conventional echocardiography is used as a first approach to evaluate cardiac dysfunction in patients with COVID-19, but, in some cases, this approach may be silent and more advanced cardiac imaging techniques, such as myocardial strain imaging or cardiac magnetic resonance, are necessary to document alterations in cardiac structure or function. In this review we sought to discuss the information provided by different cardiac imaging techniques in patients with COVID-19, both in the acute phase of the disease and after discharge from hospital, and their diagnostic and prognostic role. We also aimed at verifying whether a specific form of cardiac disease due to the SARS-CoV-2 can be identified.

Abstract
Background Currently, there is limited research on the prognostic value of NT‐proBNP (N‐terminal pro‐B‐type natriuretic peptide) as a biomarker in COVID‐19. We proposed the a priori hypothesis that an elevated NT‐proBNP concentration at admission is associated with increased in‐hospital mortality. Methods and Results In this prospective, observational cohort study of the American Heart Association’s COVID‐19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry, 4675 patients hospitalized with COVID‐19 were divided into normal and elevated NT‐proBNP cohorts by standard age‐adjusted heart failure thresholds, as well as separated by quintiles. Patients with elevated NT‐proBNP (n=1344; 28.7%) were older, with more cardiovascular risk factors, and had a significantly higher rate of in‐hospital mortality (37% versus 16%; P<0.001) and shorter median time to death (7 versus 9 days; P<0.001) than those with normal values. Analysis by quintile of NT‐proBNP revealed a steep graded relationship with mortality (7.1%–40.2%; P<0.001). NT‐proBNP was also associated with major adverse cardiac events, intensive care unit admission, intubation, shock, and cardiac arrest (P<0.001 for each). In subgroup analyses, NT‐proBNP, but not prior heart failure, was associated with increased risk of in‐hospital mortality. Adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors with presenting vital signs, an elevated NT‐proBNP was associated with 2‐fold higher adjusted odds of death (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 2.23; 95% CI, 1.80–2.76), and the log‐transformed NT‐proBNP with other biomarkers projected a 21% increased risk of death for each 2‐fold increase (adjusted OR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.08–1.34). Conclusions Elevated NT‐proBNP levels on admission for COVID‐19 are associated with an increased risk of in‐hospital mortality and other complications in patients with and without heart failure.

Abstract
COVID-19 has shown significant morbidity with the involvement of multiple systems, including the cardiovascular system. Cardiovascular manifestations in the acute phase can include myocardial injury itself, myocardial infarction, venous thromboembolic events, myocarditis, Takotsubo syndrome, and different arrhythmic events. Myocardial injury defined by the rise of cardiac biomarkers in blood has been found in multiple studies with a prevalence of about 20%. Its presence is related to worse clinical outcomes and in-hospital mortality. The mechanisms of myocardial injury have been the subject of intense research but still need to be clarified. The characterization of the cardiac affectation with echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance has found mixed results in different studies, with a striking incidence of imaging criteria for myocarditis. Regarding post-acute and chronic follow-up results, the persistence of symptoms and imaging changes in recovered COVID-19 patients has raised concerns about the duration and the possible significance of these findings. Even though the knowledge about this disease has increased incredibly in the last year, many aspects are still unclear and warrant further research.

Abstract
Objectives Myocardial injury during active coronavirus disease‐2019 (COVID‐19) infection is well described; however, its persistence during recovery is unclear. We assessed left ventricle (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) using speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) in COVID‐19 recovered patients and its correlation with various parameters. Methods A total of 134 subjects within 30–45 days post recovery from COVID‐19 infection and normal LV ejection fraction were enrolled. Routine blood investigations, inflammatory markers (on admission) and comprehensive echocardiography including STE were done for all. Results Of the 134 subjects, 121 (90.3%) were symptomatic during COVID‐19 illness and were categorized as mild: 61 (45.5%), moderate: 50 (37.3%) and severe: 10 (7.5%) COVID‐19 illness. Asymptomatic COVID‐19 infection was reported in 13 (9.7%) patients. Subclinical LV and right ventricle (RV) dysfunction were seen in 40 (29.9%) and 14 (10.5%) patients, respectively. Impaired LVGLS was reported in 1 (7.7%), 8 (13.1%), 22 (44%) and 9 (90%) subjects with asymptomatic, mild, moderate and severe disease, respectively. LVGLS was significantly lower in patients recovered from severe illness(mild: ‐21 ± 3.4%; moderate: ‐18.1 ± 6.9%; severe: ‐15.5 ± 3.1%; p < 0.0001). Subjects with reduced LVGLS had significantly higher interleukin‐6 (p < 0.0001), C‐reactive protein (p = 0.001), lactate dehydrogenase (p = 0.009), serum ferritin (p = 0.03), and troponin (p = 0.01) levels during index admission. Conclusions Subclinical LV dysfunction was seen in nearly a third of recovered COVID‐19 patients while 10.5% had RV dysfunction. Our study suggests a need for closer follow‐up among COVID‐19 recovered subjects to elucidate long‐term cardiovascular outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The manifestations of COVID-19 as outlined by imaging modalities such as echocardiography, lung ultrasound (LUS), and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging are not fully described. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of the current literature and included studies that described cardiovascular manifestations of COVID-19 using echocardiography, CMR, and pulmonary manifestations using LUS. We queried PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science for relevant articles. Original studies and case series were included. RESULTS This review describes the most common abnormalities encountered on echocardiography, LUS, and CMR in patients infected with COVID-19.
