The effects of individual-level espoused national cultural values on the willingness to use Bitcoin-like blockchain currencies

Adoption of new banking models from a consumer perspective: the case of Iran

Purpose

Traditionally, the banking and financial sectors have pioneered adoption of new technologies and business models. One important digital banking model that has proven its efficacy in recent times, is Digital-Only Banking (DOB) where consumers interact with their banks through digital channels only. Having detailed knowledge of what actually happens at the consumer level during the adoption of new digital models and technologies is paramount to the success of these technological initiatives. The present study aims to investigate DOB adoption behavior and possible barriers using a quantitative approach at the consumer level. A conceptual model is developed by extending the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model, incorporating Trust (TR), Perceived Risk (PR) constructs and cultural moderators of Individualism (IDV) and Uncertainty Avoidance (UA).

Design/methodology/approach

For this study, an online survey instrument was created and administered in Iran. The research sample was selected through the application of purposive sampling. Data from 788 respondents were analyzed. The proposed model was tested using Partial Least Square.?.s Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The results show that DOB adoption is positively influenced by Effort Expectancy (EE), Social Influence (SI), and Facilitating Conditions (FC), while PR negatively influences DOB adoption intention. Unexpectedly, the results indicate that TR has no significant impact on DOB usage intention. Additionally, this study demonstrates that with individuals having a low level of IDV, the relationship between PE and BI is stronger, and with individuals having a low level of UA, the impact of SI on BI is stronger. It also reveals that the impact of TR on BI is stronger in low individualistic cultures.

Practical implications

DOB providers should enhance support features of their services or provide facilities that make it simpler for users to accomplish online transactions. Here, in order to improve the UI/UX design of their apps, DOB product managers should carefully observe the technical guidelines of the operating systems of digital devices, such as the Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) for iOS and Material You for Android. Additionally, DOB providers should build partnerships with mega online retailers to provide hassle-free and easy to use payment solutions for consumers.

Originality/value

DOB, as a novel and business model, has been investigated in very few studies, especially regarding any which focus on its adoption. To fill this gap, this research investigates DOB adoption through a modified version of the UTAUT model. The findings of this study suggest that future research regarding DOB should consider sources of TR, types of non-adopters, and context. This study, as the first of its kind in DOB literature, also highlights the significant role played by cultural values in customer behavior regarding DOB adoption.

Cryptocurrency adoption and continuance intention among Indians: moderating role of perceived government control

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the influence of perceived government control (PGC) on cryptocurrency adoption and continuance intention among Indians through an integrated model of the extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) with the Information System Success Model (ISSM).

Design/methodology/approach

This study examined the items of cryptocurrency adoption, continuance intention and PGC adopted from the information systems and cryptocurrency literature. The survey was administered to 391 Indians through an online questionnaire. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to analyze data.

Findings

Results have shown that social influence, effort expectancy and perceived trust are the major drivers for cryptocurrency adoption. All paths leading to cryptocurrency adoption were found to be significant in the hypothesized directions. The study also found that PGC moderates the relationship between adoption and continuance intention.

Originality/value

This study advances existing literature by empirically verifying the integrated UTAUT and ISSM in the context of cryptocurrency adoption for investment purposes. The findings offer crypto-developers and crypto-exchange insight into how adoption is diffusing in emerging markets. The findings provide policymakers with meaningful insights into the role of government regulations in cryptocurrency continuance intention.

Fake news believability: The effects of political beliefs and espoused cultural values

Fake news has led to a polarized society as evidenced by diametrically opposed perceptions of and reactions to global events such as the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and presidential campaigns. Popular press has linked individuals’ political beliefs and cultural values to the extent to which they believe in false content shared on social networking sites (SNS). However, sweeping generalizations run the risk of helping exacerbate divisiveness in already polarized societies. This study examines the effects of individuals’ political beliefs and espoused cultural values on fake news believability using a repeated-measures design (that exposes individuals to a variety of fake news scenarios). Results from online questionnaire-based survey data collected from participants in the US and India help confirm that conservative individuals tend to exhibit increasing fake news believability and show that collectivists tend to do the same. This study advances knowledge on characteristics that make individuals more susceptible to lending credence to fake news. In addition, this study explores the influence exerted by control variables (i.e., age, sex, and Internet usage). Findings are used to provide implications for theory as well as actionable insights.
