A case report describing diverticulosis of the appendix presenting as acute appendicitis

A rare simultaneous occurrence of appendiceal diverticulitis and non-perforated peptic ulcer mimicking abdominal peritonitis symptoms

Appendiceal diverticulitis is an infrequent disease that can mimic other diseases' symptoms or cause different symptoms because of its various complications. However, one of the most frequent complications of this disease is a perforation that can lead to other serious problems such as peritonitis. This complication can threaten a patient's health condition. In this article, a male patient presented with abdominal pain and was admitted to the surgical ward with suspicion of a perforated peptic ulcer. However, more investigation showed a simultaneous occurrence of peptic ulcer and perforated appendiceal diverticulitis that cause peritonitis symptoms.

Congenital Appendiceal Diverticulum: An Incidental Finding During an Appendectomy

Diverticula are small outpouchings that form at weak points in the wall of the digestive tract. They are commonly found in the colon, and while they can occur anywhere in the digestive tract, occurrence in the appendix is rare. Here, we report the case of a young woman presenting with complaints of right lower quadrant abdominal pain. The patient’s physical examination, laboratory values, and computed tomography (CT) result supported the presumptive diagnosis of uncomplicated appendicitis. The patient underwent a laparoscopic appendectomy, where an appendiceal diverticulum was appreciated. A postoperative pathology report supported the diagnosis of a true appendiceal diverticulum. The patient’s symptoms improved postoperatively, and her recovery has been unremarkable. We conclude that appendiceal diverticula are often incidental findings that should be removed along with the appendix to reduce the risk of malignancy and perforation.

Incidental Finding of Diverticulosis of the Appendix with Sessile Serrated Adenoma

Diverticulosis and sessile serrated adenomas of the colon are common findings on routine colonoscopy. However, diverticulosis of the appendix is rare and is usually only discovered due to conversion to diverticulitis or as an incidental finding. Diverticulitis of the appendix can present as appendicitis but is associated with more risks. A pathology report is important in diverticulosis of the appendix due to the association with malignancy. This case report reviews a 52-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with right lower quadrant pain who was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and was incidentally found to have diverticulosis of the appendix with a sessile serrated adenoma.
