A novel anionic di-oxido vanadium(V) Schiff base complex: Synthesis, spectral characterization, X ray crystal structure, catalytic activity for the preparation of tetrahydro-4H-chromene derivatives and antibacterial properties

Controlled Modification of Triaminoguanidine-Based μ3 Ligands in Multinuclear [VIVO]/[VVO2] Complexes and Their Catalytic Potential in the Synthesis of 2-Amino-3-cyano-4H-pyrans/4H-chromenes

Reaction of tris(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-triaminoguanidinium chloride (I·HCl) and tris(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-triaminoguanidinium chloride (II·HCl) with [VIVO(acac)2] (1:1 molar ratio) in refluxing methanol resulted in mononuclear [VIVO] complexes, [VIVO(H2L1')(MeOH)] (1) and [VIVO(H2L2')(MeOH)] (2), respectively, where I and II undergo intramolecular triazole ring formation. Aerial oxidation of 1 and 2 in MeOH in the presence of Cs2CO3 gave corresponding cis-[VVO2] complexes Cs[(VO2)(H2L1')] (3) and Cs[(VO2)(H2L2')] (4). However, reaction of an aerially oxidized methanolic solution of [VIVO(acac)2] with I·HCl and II·HCl in the presence of Cs2CO3 (in 1:1:1 molar ratio) gave mononuclear complexes Cs[(VO2)(H3L1)] (5) and Cs[(VO2)(H3L2)] (6) without intramolecular triazole ring formation. Similar anionic trinuclear complexes Cs2[(VO2)3(L1)] (7) and Cs2[(VO2)3(L2)] (8) were isolable upon increasing the amounts of the vanadium precursor and Cs2CO3 to 3 equiv to the reaction applied for 5 and 6. Keeping the reaction mixture of 1 in MeOH under air gave [VVO(H2L1')(OMe)] (9). Structures of 3, 7, 8, and 9 were confirmed by X-ray crystal structure study. A permanent porosity in the crystalline metal-organic framework of 7 confirmed by single-crystal X-ray investigation was further verified by the BET study. Along with a suitable reaction mechanism, these synthesized compounds were explored as effective catalysts for the synthesis of biomolecules 4H-pyran/4H-chromenes.

Engineered organotin(IV) and vanadium(V) derivatives with distinct coordination modes and luminescent properties for the efficient detection and quantification of permanganate ions

The distinction in coordination modes of metal complexes leads to their versatile structural features and unique properties. Here, we report two tetradentate Schiff base ligands (H₂L¹ and H₂L²) bearing N₂O₂ donor sets, tactically selected to provide distinct coordination modes with different metal ions. The ligands were utilized to synthesize their organotin(IV) (1-4) and vanadium(V) (5) derivatives. The synthesized compounds were characterized using elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, multi-nuclei NMR (¹H, ¹³C, and ¹¹⁹Sn) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The organotin(IV) derivatives (1-4) displayed hepta-coordination around both the Sn centres as they were achieved in their dimeric form. Contrariwise, the vanadium(V) compound (5) was isolated as a mononuclear entity exhibiting penta-coordinated geometry around the vanadium centre. The variation in the coordination modes was evident in their UV-vis and fluorescence spectra. The organotin(IV) compounds (1-4) exhibited a strong emission band centred at 468 nm when excited at a wavelength of 360 nm whereas the vanadium(V) (5) derivative displayed poor fluorogenic response. Compound 1 was further explored for the fluorogenic chemo-sensing of permanganate ions (MnO₄^-) amongst various anions by quenching response. A detailed investigation of the recognition of permanganate ions was accomplished by spectrofluorometric, spectroscopic (¹¹⁹Sn NMR), mass spectrometric, and computational studies.

Ionic Dioxidovanadium(V) Complexes with Schiff-Base Ligands as Potential Insulin-Mimetic Agents-Substituent Effect on Structure and Stability

Four dioxidovanadium(V) complexes with Schiff-base ligands based on 2-hydroxybenzhydrazide with four different substituted salicylaldehydes (5-chlorosalicylaldehyde, 3,5-dichlorosalicylaldehyde, 5-nitrosalicylaldehyde, 3-bromo-5-chlorosalicylaldehyde) were synthesized and described, by using V₂O₅ and triethylamine. The single crystal X-ray structure measurements as well as elemental analyses and IR spectra confirmed the formulas of the ionic complexes with a protonated triethylamine acting as counterion, HTEA[VO₂(L)] (HL = Schiff-base ligand). The kinetic stability of the complexes at pH = 2 and 7 was discussed with respect to the neutral vanadium(V) complexes previously studied as potential insulin-mimetic agents. A correlation between the substituents in an aromatic ring of the Schiff-base ligands with crystal packing, and also with the stability of the compounds, was presented.

Eco-Friendly Synthesis of an Oxovanadium(IV)-bis(abietate) Complex with Antimicrobial Action

The search for less expensive and viable products is always one of the challenges for research development. Commonly, the synthesis of coordination compounds involves expensive ligands, through expensive and low-yield routes, in addition to generating toxic and unusable residues. In this work, the organic ligand used is derived from the resin of a reforestation tree, Pinus elliottii var. elliottii. The synthesis method used Pinus resin and an aqueous solution of vanadium(III) chloride at a temperature of 80 °C. The procedure does not involve organic solvents and does not generate toxic residues, thus imparting the complex formation reaction a green chemistry character. The synthesis resulted in an unprecedented oxovanadium(IV)-bis(abietate) complex, which was characterized by mass spectrometry (MS), chemical analysis (CHN), vibrational (FTIR) and electronic spectra (VISIBLE), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal analysis (TG/DTA). Colorimetric studies were performed according to the CIELAB color space. The structural formula found, consisted of a complex containing two abietate ligands, [VO(C20H29O2)2]. The VO(IV)-bis(abietate) complex was applied against microorganisms and showed promising results in antibacterial and antifungal activity. The best result of inhibitory action was against the strains of Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and L. monocytogenes, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 62.5 and 125 μmol L−1, respectively. For Gram-negative strains the results were 500 μmol L−1 for E. coli; and 1000 μmol L−1 for Salmonella enterica Typhimurium. Antifungal activity was performed against Candida albicans, where the MIC was 15.62 μmol L−1, and for C. tropicalis it was 62.5 μmol L−1. According to the MFC analysis, the complex presented, in addition to the fungistatic action, a fungicidal action, as there was no growth of fungi on the plates tested. The results found for the tests demonstrate that the VO(IV)-bis(abietate) complex has great potential as an antimicrobial and mainly antifungal agent. In this way, the pigmented ink with antimicrobial activity could be used in environments with a potential risk of contamination, preventing the spread of microorganisms harmful to health.

Pincer Complexes Derived from Tridentate Schiff Bases for Their Use as Antimicrobial Metallopharmaceuticals

Within the current challenges in medicinal chemistry, the development of new and better therapeutic agents effective against infectious diseases produced by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites stands out. With chemotherapy as one of the main strategies against these diseases focusing on the administration of organic and inorganic drugs, the latter is generally based on the synergistic effect produced by the formation of metal complexes with biologically active organic compounds. In this sense, Schiff bases (SBs) represent and ideal ligand scaffold since they have demonstrated a broad spectrum of antitumor, antiviral, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities, among others. In addition, SBs are synthesized in an easy manner from one-step condensation reactions, being thus suitable for facile structural modifications, having the imine group as a coordination point found in most of their metal complexes, and promoting chelation when other donor atoms are three, four, or five bonds apart. However, despite the wide variety of metal complexes found in the literature using this type of ligands, only a handful of them include on their structures tridentate SBs ligands and their biological evaluation has been explored. Hence, this review summarizes the most important antimicrobial activity results reported this far for pincer-type complexes (main group and d-block) derived from SBs tridentate ligands.

Design and Preparation of Copper(II)-Mesalamine Complex Functionalized on Silica-Coated Magnetite Nanoparticles and Study of Its Catalytic Properties for Green and Multicomponent Synthesis of Highly Substituted 4H-Chromenes and Pyridines

In the present study, a green and ecofriendly nanocatalyst was synthesized through functionalization of 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine (TCT) and mesalamine on silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), then coordination with Cu²⁺ without agglomeration, consecutively. The silica-coated MNPs functionalized with the Cu(*II)-mesalamine complex was (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@NH₂-TCT-mesalamine-Cu(II) MNPs) completely characterized by FT-IR, XRD, EDX, FESEM, TEM, VSM, TGA, and BET analyses. Afterward, the activity of the novel catalyst was investigated in the synthesis of chromene heterocycles, which were an important group of organic compounds. The activity of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@NH₂-TCT-mesalamine-Cu(II) MNPs as a high-performance heterogeneous nanocatalyst was evaluated for the synthesis of 2-amino-4-aryl-6-(phenylthio)pyridine-3,5-dicarbonitriles and 2-amino-4H-chromenes via aromatic aldehydes, malononitrile, and enolizable C-H acids (resorcinol, 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione, and benzenethiol) in ethanol under reflux conditions. Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-TCT-mesalamine-Cu(II) could be quickly separated using an external magnet and reused nine times without a remarkable reduction of its catalytic activity.
