Cryptographic approaches to authenticating synthetic DNA sequences

In a bioeconomy that relies on synthetic DNA sequences, the ability to ensure their authenticity is critical. DNA watermarks can encode identifying data in short sequences and can be combined with error correction and encryption protocols to ensure that sequences are robust to errors and securely communicated. New digital signature techniques allow for public verification that a sequence has not been modified and can contain sufficient information for synthetic DNA to be self-documenting. In translating these techniques from bacteria to more complex genetically modified organisms (GMOs), special considerations must be made to allow for public verification of these products. We argue that these approaches should be widely implemented to assert authorship, increase the traceability, and detect the unauthorized use of synthetic DNA.

Dynamic feedback bit-level image privacy protection based on chaos and information hiding

Bit is the most basic unit of a digital image in the spatial domain, and bit-level encryption is regarded as an important technical means for digital image privacy protection. To address the vulnerability of image privacy protection to cryptographic attacks, in this paper, a bit-level image privacy protection scheme using Zigzag and chain-diffusion is proposed. The scheme uses a combination of Zigzag interleaving scrambling with chaotic sequences and chain-diffusion method images are encrypted at each bit level, while using non-sequential encryption to achieve efficient and secure encryption. To balance security and efficiency, the encryption strategy for each bit layer is weighted. The chaos-based sequences used for encryption depend on the previous hash value, thus the effect of chain-diffusion is achieved. To further enhance the encryption effect, a non-sequential encryption technique by non-linearly rearranging the bit cipher image is employed, so that the attacker cannot crack the protection scheme by analyzing the encrypted image. The ciphertext image hidden by discrete wavelet transform (DWT) also provides efficient encryption, higher level of security and robustness to attacks. This technology provides indistinguishable secret data embedding, making it difficult for attackers to detect or extract hidden information. Experimental results show that this scheme can effectively protect the confidentiality of the image and can resist various common cryptographic attacks. The scheme proposed in this paper is a preferred digital image privacy protection technology, so it has broad application prospects in image secure transmission occasions.

DNA is an intelligent data storage medium due to its stability and high density. It has been used by nature for over 3.5 billion years. Compared with traditional methods, DNA offers better compression and physical density. DNA can retain information for thousands of years. However, challenges exist in scalability, standardization, metadata gathering, biocybersecurity, and specialized tools. Addressing these challenges is crucial for widespread implementation. Collaboration among experts, as well as keeping the future in mind, is needed to unlock the full potential of DNA data storage, which promises low energy costs, high-density storage, and long-term stability.

DNA Watermarking Using Codon Postfix Technique

DNA watermarking is a data hiding technique that aims to protect the copyright of DNA sequences and ensures the security of private genetic information. In this paper, we proposed a novel DNA watermarking technique that can be used to embed binary bits into real DNA sequences. The proposed technique mutates the codon postfix according to the embedded bit. Our method was tested for a sample set of DNA sequences and the extracted bits showed robustness against mutation. Furthermore, the proposed DNA watermarking method proved to be secured, undetectable, resistance, and preservative to biological functions.
