Efficient CO2 Utilization via a Hybrid Na-CO2 System Based on CO2 Dissolution

Activating reversible carbonate reactions in Nasicon solid electrolyte-based Na-air battery via in-situ formed catholyte

Out of practicality, ambient air rather than oxygen is preferred as a fuel in electrochemical systems, but CO2 and H2O present in air cause severe irreversible reactions, such as the formation of carbonates and hydroxides, which typically degrades performance. Herein, we report on a Na-air battery enabled by a reversible carbonate reaction (Na2CO3·xH2O, x = 0 or 1) in Nasicon solid electrolyte (Na3Zr2Si2PO12) that delivers a much higher discharge potential of 3.4 V than other metal-air batteries resulting in high energy density and achieves > 86 % energy efficiency at 0.1 mA cm-2 over 100 cycles. This cell design takes advantage of moisture in ambient air to form an in-situ catholyte via the deliquescent property of NaOH. As a result, not only reversible electrochemical reaction of Na2CO3·xH2O is activated but also its kinetics is facilitated. Our results demonstrate the reversible use of free ambient air as a fuel, enabled by the reversible electrochemical reaction of carbonates with a solid electrolyte.

Outdoor airborne allergens: Characterization, behavior and monitoring in Europe

Aeroallergens or inhalant allergens, are proteins dispersed through the air and have the potential to induce allergic conditions such as rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma. Outdoor aeroallergens are found predominantly in pollen grains and fungal spores, which are allergen carriers. Aeroallergens from pollen and fungi have seasonal emission patterns that correlate with plant pollination and fungal sporulation and are strongly associated with atmospheric weather conditions. They are released when allergen carriers come in contact with the respiratory system, e.g. the nasal mucosa. In addition, due to the rupture of allergen carriers, airborne allergen molecules may be released directly into the air in the form of micronic and submicronic particles (cytoplasmic debris, cell wall fragments, droplets etc.) or adhered onto other airborne particulate matter. Therefore, aeroallergen detection strategies must consider, in addition to the allergen carriers, the allergen molecules themselves. This review article aims to present the current knowledge on inhalant allergens in the outdoor environment, their structure, localization, and factors affecting their production, transformation, release or degradation. In addition, methods for collecting and quantifying aeroallergens are listed and thoroughly discussed. Finally, the knowledge gaps, challenges and implications associated with aeroallergen analysis are described.

Metal-Redox Bicatalysis Batteries for Energy Storage and Chemical Production

New types of electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices based on redox electrocatalytic reactions possess great potential in renewable energy to maximize energy utilization and balance environmental issues. The typical device is the metal-redox bicatalysis battery, where the cathode is redox bifunctional catalyst (named as redox bicatalyst) with gas, solid, liquid as active reactants while anode is metal, driven by cathodic redox electrocatalytic reactions during charge/discharge processes, which promotes the energy storage and chemical production. In this system, the metal anode, redox-bicatalyst cathode, electrolytes, and the redox electrochemical reactions can be modified and adjusted to achieve the optimal energy conversion and utilization. Therefore, the deep understanding of the electrochemical system is conducive to designing new devices to meet the demand among various applications, including energy storage and conversion. In this review, the authors clarify the fundamentals and design principles of the rechargeable/reversible metal-redox bicatalysis batteries and how each part affects the devices in energy conversion and chemical production. The authors summarize the electrocatalytic reduction/oxidation reactions, the reported systems relied on redox reactions, and the corresponding redox bicatalysts. Finally, a perspective of the key challenges and the possible new types of metal-redox bicatalysis batteries for efficient energy utilization and chemical production are given.

Concurrent oxygen reduction and water oxidation at high ionic strength for scalable electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide

Electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide via selective two-electron transfer oxygen reduction or water oxidation reactions offers a cleaner, cost-effective alternative to anthraquinone processes. However, it remains a challenge to achieve high Faradaic efficiencies at elevated current densities. Herein, we report that oxygen-deficient Pr1.0Sr1.0Fe0.75Zn0.25O4-δ perovskite oxides rich of oxygen vacancies can favorably bind the reaction intermediates to facilitate selective and efficient two-electron transfer pathways. These oxides exhibited superior Faradic efficiencies (~99%) for oxygen reduction over a wide potential range (0.05 to 0.45 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode) and current densities surpassing 50 mA cm-2 under high ionic strengths. We further found that the oxides perform a high selectivity (~80%) for two-electron transfer water oxidation reaction at a low overpotential (0.39 V). Lastly, we devised a membrane-free electrolyser employing bifunctional electrocatalysts, achieving a record-high Faradaic efficiency of 163.0% at 2.10 V and 50 mA cm-2. This marks the first report of the concurrent oxygen reduction and water oxidation catalysed by efficient bifunctional oxides in a novel membrane-free electrolyser for scalable hydrogen peroxide electrosynthesis.

Integrated CO2 capture and electrochemical upgradation: the underpinning mechanism and techno-chemical analysis

Coupling post-combustion CO2 capture with electrochemical utilization (CCU) is a quantum leap in renewable energy science since it eliminates the cost and energy involved in the transport and storage of CO2. However, the major challenges involved in industrial scale implementation are selecting an appropriate solvent/electrolyte for CO2 capture, modeling an appropriate infrastructure by coupling an electrolyser with a CO2 point source and a separator to isolate CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) products, and finally selection of an appropriate electrocatalyst. In this review, we highlight the major difficulties with detailed mechanistic interpretation in each step, to find out the underpinning mechanism involved in the integration of electrochemical CCU to achieve higher-value products. In the past decades, most of the studies dealt with individual parts of the integration process, i.e., either selecting a solvent for CO2 capture, designing an electrocatalyst, or choosing an ideal electrolyte. In this context, it is important to note that solvents such as monoethanolamine, bicarbonate, and ionic liquids are often used as electrolytes in CO2 capture media. Therefore, it is essential to fabricate a cost-effective electrolyser that should function as a reversible binder with CO2 and an electron pool capable of recovering the solvent to electrolyte reversibly. For example, reversible ionic liquids, which are non-ionic in their normal forms, but produce ionic forms after CO2 capture, can be further reverted back to their original non-ionic forms after CO2 release with almost 100% efficiency through the chemical or thermal modulations. This review also sheds light on a focused techno-economic evolution for converting the electrochemically integrated CCU process from a pilot-scale project to industrial-scale implementation. In brief, this review article will summarize a state-of-the-art argumentation of challenges and outcomes over the different segments involved in electrochemically integrated CCU to stimulate urgent progress in the field.

Fundamental Understanding of Nonaqueous and Hybrid Na-CO2 Batteries: Challenges and Perspectives

Alkali metal-CO₂ batteries, which combine CO₂ recycling with energy conversion and storage, are a promising way to address the energy crisis and global warming. Unfortunately, the limited cycle life, poor reversibility, and low energy efficiency of these batteries have hindered their commercialization. Li-CO₂ battery systems have been intensively researched in these aspects over the past few years, however, the exploration of Na-CO₂ batteries is still in its infancy. To improve the development of Na-CO₂ batteries, one must have a full picture of the chemistry and electrochemistry controlling the operation of Na-CO₂ batteries and a full understanding of the correlation between cell configurations and functionality therein. Here, recent advances in CO₂ chemical and electrochemical mechanisms on nonaqueous Na-CO₂ batteries and hybrid Na-CO₂ batteries (including O₂ -involved Na-O₂ /CO₂ batteries) are reviewed in-depth and comprehensively. Following this, the primary issues and challenges in various battery components are identified, and the design strategies for the interfacial structure of Na anodes, electrolyte properties, and cathode materials are explored, along with the correlations between cell configurations, functional materials, and comprehensive performances are established. Finally, the prospects and directions for rationally constructing Na-CO₂ battery materials are foreseen.

A Combined Chemical-Electrochemical Process to Capture CO2 and Produce Hydrogen and Electricity

Several carbon sequestration technologies have been proposed to utilize carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce energy and chemical compounds. However, feasible technologies have not been adopted due to the low efficiency conversion rate and high-energy requirements. Process intensification increases the process productivity and efficiency by combining chemical reactions and separation operations. In this work, we present a model of a chemical-electrochemical cyclical process that can capture carbon dioxide as a bicarbonate salt. The proposed process also produces hydrogen and electrical energy. Carbon capture is enhanced by the reaction at the cathode that displaces the equilibrium into bicarbonate production. Literature data show that the cyclic process can produce stable operation for long times by preserving ionic balance using a suitable ionic membrane that regulates ionic flows between the two half-cells. Numerical simulations have validated the proof of concept. The proposed process could serve as a novel CO2 sequestration technology while producing electrical energy and hydrogen.

Highly Efficient CO2 Utilization via Aqueous Zinc- or Aluminum-CO2 Systems for Hydrogen Gas Evolution and Electricity Production

Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) has increased from 278 to 408 parts per million (ppm) over the industrial period and has critically impacted climate change. In response to this crisis, carbon capture, utilization, and storage/sequestration technologies have been studied. So far, however, the economic feasibility of the existing conversion technologies is still inadequate owing to sluggish CO₂ conversion. Herein, we report an aqueous zinc- and aluminum-CO₂ system that utilizes acidity from spontaneous dissolution of CO₂ in aqueous solution to generate electrical energy and hydrogen (H₂ ). The system has a positively shifted onset potential of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by 0.4 V compared to a typical HER under alkaline conditions and facile HER kinetics with low Tafel slope of 34 mV dec^-1 . The Al-CO₂ system has a maximum power density of 125 mW cm^-2 which is the highest value among CO₂ utilization electrochemical system.

Synergistic Coupling Derived Cobalt Oxide with Nitrogenated Holey Two-Dimensional Matrix as an Efficient Bifunctional Catalyst for Metal-Air Batteries

Developing cost-effective, efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the heart of metal-air batteries as a renewable-energy technology. Herein, well-distributed nanopolyhedron (NP) Co₃O₄ grown on iron (Fe) encapsulated in graphitic layers on a nitrogenated, porous two-dimensional (2D) structure, namely, a C₂N matrix, (NP Co₃O₄/Fe@C₂N), presents an outstanding bifunctional catalytic activity with a comparable overpotential and Tafel slope to those of benchmark Pt/C and IrO₂. The rationally designed atomic configuration of Co₃O₄ on the C₂N matrix has a well-controlled NP morphology with a (111) plane, leading to bifunctional activities for the ORR and OER. Interestingly, the specific interaction between the NP Co₃O₄ nanoparticles and the C₂N matrix introduces synergistic coupling and changes the electronic configuration of Co atoms and the C₂N framework. Benefiting from the synergistic coupling of Co₃O₄ with the C₂N matrix, the NP Co₃O₄/Fe@C₂N electrocatalyst exhibits exceptionally high stability and an even lower charge-discharge overpotential gap of 0.85 V at 15 mA cm^-2 than that of the Pt/C+IrO₂ catalyst (1.01 V) in Zn-air batteries. This work provides insights into the rational design of a metal oxide on a C₂N matrix for bifunctional, low-cost electrochemical catalysts.

In-situ local phase-transitioned MoSe2 in La0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ heterostructure and stable overall water electrolysis over 1000 hours

Developing efficient bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting that are earth-abundant, cost-effective, and durable is of considerable importance from the practical perspective to mitigate the issues associated with precious metal-based catalysts. Herein, we introduce a heterostructure comprising perovskite oxides (La_0.5Sr_0.5CoO_3–δ) and molybdenum diselenide (MoSe₂) as an electrochemical catalyst for overall water electrolysis. Interestingly, formation of the heterostructure of La_0.5Sr_0.5CoO_3–δ and MoSe₂ induces a local phase transition in MoSe₂, 2 H to 1 T phase, and more electrophilic La_0.5Sr_0.5CoO_3–δ with partial oxidation of the Co cation owing to electron transfer from Co to Mo. Together with these synergistic effects, the electrochemical activities are significantly improved for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. In the overall water splitting operation, the heterostructure showed excellent stability at the high current density of 100 mA cm⁻² over 1,000 h, which is exceptionally better than the stability of the state-of-the-art platinum and iridium oxide couple.

While catalysts are necessary for H₂ and O₂ production from water, developing materials capable of evolving both under the same conditions has proven challenging. Here, authors prepare perovskite-oxide and molybdenum sulfide heterostructures as bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalysts.
