Does obesity create a relative sense of excess poverty?

Background

This study investigates the potential relationship between obesity and self-ranking of poverty, as a proxy for self-awareness and happiness. To the best of our knowledge, this issue has not been previously explored based on self-ranking of poverty when income is controlled.

Method

Ordered Probit Regressions. We propose a new measure for the influence of western social values and norms associated with discrimination against obese women.

Results

Based on a follow-up survey after two years, findings demonstrate a drop in the projected probability of self-ranking as "not poor" with the BMI from 0.73 to 0.37 (females) - 0.48 (males) when the level of income is controlled. Similar outcomes are obtained when the independent variables are lagged and thus avoid endogeneity concerns. Finally, additional outcomes support the conclusion that the lagged BMI Granger-cause self-ranking of poverty for women, but not for men. Findings support the awareness of more obese women to lower prospects of finding a job.

Conclusion

Since according to twin studies, approximately 80% of obesity emanates from genetic factors, research findings stress the need to educate the public against prejudices on the grounds of obesity. In particular, our study seeks to evoke awareness among potential employers, which, in turn, might motivate avoidance of, or at least reduction in, an implicit wage penalty against obese women.

Unraveling Childhood Obesity: A Grounded Theory Approach to Psychological, Social, Parental, and Biological Factors

Childhood obesity is a major medical and public health issue of global interest, which is influenced by a diverse array of factors and carries significant medical and psychosocial implications. Despite the extensive studies that have been conducted to explore the specific issue, the impact of several factors that influence, generate, worsen, and make chronic the phenomenon needs further exploration. This study aimed to construct a grounded theory that includes and connects the psychological, social, parental, and biological factors affecting childhood obesity. Key psychological factors include mental health issues such as depression and emotional eating, while social factors encompass socioeconomic status and cultural influences. Parental factors involve parenting styles and feeding practices, and biological factors relate to genetic predispositions and prenatal conditions. These factors interact in complex ways, highlighting the multifactorial nature of childhood obesity. The study employed a qualitative grounded theory approach, using research articles to achieve a thorough understanding. Qualitative analysis of the articles was conducted using Atlas.ti 24.0 software. Twenty-five research articles were required to reach theoretical saturation. The analysis resulted in 336 codes that were grouped into seven broad categories and twenty-four different subcategories. Through the construction of the theoretical framework, it was recognized that obesity in minors is a complex and multifactorial issue and that the network of causes and influencing factors covers a broad spectrum ranging from the individual to the family, and subsequently to society at large, which interact with each other.

Is DNA methylation in the brain a mechanism of alcohol use disorder?

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a worldwide problem. Unfortunately, the molecular mechanisms of alcohol misuse are still poorly understood, therefore successful therapeutic approaches are limited. Accumulating data indicate that the tendency for compulsive alcohol use is inherited, suggesting a genetic background as an important factor. However, the probability to develop AUD is also affected by life experience and environmental factors. Therefore, the epigenetic modifications that are altered over lifetime likely contribute to increased risk of alcohol misuse. Here, we review the literature looking for the link between DNA methylation in the brain, a common epigenetic modification, and AUD-related behaviors in humans, mice and rats. We sum up the main findings, identify the existing gaps in our knowledge and indicate future directions of the research.

Differences in Nutritional Intake, Total Body Fat, and BMI Score between Twins

The present study aimed to investigate the coincidence of obesity and nutritional intake in monozygotic twins compared to dizygotic twins. The data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) from 2005 through 2014 were analyzed. Participants ≥ 20 years old were enrolled. The 1006 monozygotic twins and 238 dizygotic twins were analyzed for differences in self-reported nutritional intake, total body fat, and body mass index (BMI) using a linear regression model. The estimated values (EV) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of the difference in dietary intake, total body fat, and BMI score were calculated. The monozygotic twin group and the dizygotic twin group showed similar differences in nutritional intake, DEXA fat, and BMI (all p > 0.05). The differences in nutritional intake of total calories and carbohydrates were lower in the monozygotic twin group than in the dizygotic twin group (all p < 0.05). The differences in total body fat were lower in monozygotic twins than in dizygotic twins (adjusted EV = 2427.86 g, 95% CI = 1777.19−3078.53 and adjusted EV = 1.90%, 95% CI = 1.33−2.46). Monozygotic twins had more similar dietary habits for total calories and carbohydrate intake. Other nutritional factors did not show differential similarity between monozygotic and dizygotic twins. Total body fat was more concordant in monozygotic twins.
