Is ageism an oppression?

Empathy mitigates the relationship between ageism and subjective age in late life

This study corresponds with a dispute in gerontology literature about whether a younger subjective age acts as a psychological defense for older adults by perceiving themselves as younger in order to dissociate from their age-group or as a marker of good physical health. This cross-sectional study presents a preliminary step to clarify this dispute. We examined the role of emotional empathy (measured by the Multifaceted Empathy Test) as a moderator in the ageism (measured implicitly by the Brief Implicit Association Test) and subjective age (measured on Likert scale) association on a convenience sample of 203 community-dwelling older adults (aged 65-90, M = 74.54, SD = 6.76). It was hypothesized that implicit ageism would be associated with younger subjective age and that this association would be only evident among older adults with lower emotional empathy. Implicit ageism was not associated with younger subjective age. As expected, hierarchical linear regression showed that the connection between higher implicit ageism and a younger subjective age remains significant (p = 0.012) only among participants with lower emotional empathy (∆R2 = 0.022, β = 0.156). Higher emotional empathy was associated with younger subjective age. For older adults who are equipped with the ability to feel others' emotions, the defensive dissociation between self and other perceptions of aging might be unnecessary. Theoretical and methodological implications are discussed.

Age-appropriate elder care recipients? Care manager's categorisation practices in intraprofessional case conferences

Age categories are related to perceptions and norms concerning appropriate behaviour, appearances, expectations, and so forth. In Sweden, municipal home care and residential care are commonly referred to as "elder care", primarily catering to individuals in their 80s or 90s. However, there is no set age limit reserving these services for an older age group. In intra-professional case conferences, care managers convene with colleagues to discuss care needs and eligibility for elder care services. Despite their significance, these conferences have received limited scholarly attention. The aim of this study was to analyse how care managers categorise persons based on age in intra-professional case conferences when discussing care needs and appropriate support to meet these needs. The study utilised data from 39 audio-recorded case conferences involving the discussion of 137 different cases, which were analysed using discourse analysis. Our findings showed that chronological age was frequently made relevant and applied in discussions about the appropriateness of usual elder care services. Four themes emerged, representing how the care managers implicitly and explicitly categorised clients of different chronological ages as typical/normal or atypical/deviant in these discussions: the "too young", the "not-so-old", the "old", and the "extraordinarily old". The findings contribute to research on ageing by demonstrating that, in an elder care context, being categorised as atypical/deviant (in terms of being younger) may be more beneficial than being seen as a normal or older elder care recipient. This underscores the importance of further research on the impact of informal age categorisations of clients on actual decisions about welfare services.

Vulnerability in context; hard numbers, tricky words and grey areas for gerontology

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Portuguese government identified those aged 70 or more as a risk group, placing a special duty of protection on them to shelter-at-home. This paper asks how Portuguese municipalities, using Facebook posts, communicated the risk to older adults and to what extent ageist stereotypes were found in the language and frames employed. Over 3800 Facebook posts made by Portuguese municipalities concerning older adults and COVID-19 published between March and July 2020 were analyzed. Language counts for age-related words were used in a first round of content analysis followed by a process of thematic analysis. Findings indicate that the language used to address Portuguese older adults could be understood as ageist in terms of homogenizing older people as a fixed group. The communication of risk was often conflated with the vulnerability narrative already observed in the extant literature. However, context- and culture-specific themes of ‘solidarity’, ‘inter-relatedness’, ‘duty of care’ and ‘support for those living in isolation’ were also found. The study highlights the extent to which language, culture and context are intertwined with our understanding of age, aging and ageism. It provides a culturally-specific case study, which challenges both gerontological interpretations of vulnerability and neoliberal frames which focus responsibility on the individual regardless of age. We argue that these alternative frames echo the emerging discourse of mutual aid and solidarity, providing a wider context for addressing vulnerability in a health crisis.
