Poor Sleep Quality Is Associated with Altered Taste Perception in Chinese Adults

Aging and chronic inflammation: impacts on olfactory dysfunction-a comprehensive review

Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is a common nasal disease, particularly prevalent among the elderly population, significantly impacting the affected individuals' quality of life. This review focuses on the influence of aging and chronic inflammation on olfactory dysfunction, presenting insights from both the peripheral and central olfactory systems. By exploring the molecular mechanisms and pathological changes underlying the occurrence of olfactory dysfunction in relation to age-related diseases and chronic inflammation conditions, we aim to provide a comprehensive theoretical foundation for further research and offer valuable insights for more effective treatment of olfactory dysfunction.

Sleep disorders as independent predictors of taste dysfunction risk

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate the association between sleep disorders and the prevalence of taste dysfunction and the mediation effect of oral microbe in adults over 40 years.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Cross-sectional data were utilized from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-2014). Regression models were employed, adjusting for demographic variables and covariates. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on age, sex, ethnicity, and education level. Multiplicative interactions were assessed through likelihood ratio tests. Additionally, the impact of sleep disturbance on the alpha diversity of the oral microbiome was examined using the rank-sum test (significance threshold: p < 0.05). Mediation analysis based on oral microbiota was conducted.

RESULTS

The analysis included 4869 participants. After adjusting for adjusting for demographic variables and covariates, individuals with sleep disorders exhibited a 36% increased risk of taste dysfunctions compared to those without sleep disorders (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.00-1.84, p = 0.05). Interaction analyses indicated no significant differences between sleep disorders and taste dysfunctions concerning sex, educational level, and age across various models (Crude Model, Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3; p for interaction > 0.05). Furthermore, compared with the non-sleep disorder group, patients with sleep disorders demonstrated decreased numbers of OTUs, Shannon-Wiener indices, and Faith's phylogenetic diversity indices in the oral microbiota (p < 0.05). However, the mediation analysis failed to reveal an indirect effect of oral microbiome on taste dysfunction (p > 0.05.) CONCLUSION: Sleep disorders independently correlate with a higher risk of taste dysfunctions, potentially associated with alterations in oral flora.

Healthy Sleep Pattern, Metabolic Diseases, and Risk of Stroke: The Kailuan Cohort Study

Background

Sleep complaints were reported to be associated with stroke, however, the evidence on the association between healthy sleep pattern and stroke risk in Chinese is limited.

Objective

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between healthy sleep pattern and stroke in Chinese, and the influence of metabolic diseases on the association.

Methods

A total of 11,851 participants from the Kailuan study in China without stroke at baseline were included. We calculated a healthy sleep score according to four sleep factors, and defined the low-risk groups as follows: no insomnia, no excessive daytime sleepiness, no frequent snoring, and sleep 7-8h/d. Each low-risk sleep factor was assigned a score of 1. Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the association between healthy sleep score and stroke. Mediation analysis was used to estimate the role of metabolic diseases (obesity, diabetes, and hypertension) in the healthy sleep score-stroke association.

Results

During a mean follow-up period of 7.7 years, 504 cases of stroke were identified. A higher healthy sleep score was associated with a lower risk of stroke in a dose-response manner (P-trend=0.03). The adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for participants with a healthy sleep score of 4 versus ≤2 was 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.56, 0.96). In addition, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension collectively explained 21.9% (95% CI: 17.2, 26.5) of the association between healthy sleep score and stroke.

Conclusion

Adherence to healthy sleep pattern was associated with a lower risk of stroke, and the favorable association was partially mediated by metabolic diseases.

Self-reported sleep disorders and the risk of all cancer types: evidence from the Kailuan Cohort study

OBJECTIVES

Previous studies that focussed on sleep disturbance have primarily examined specific aspects of sleep disorders rather than considering overall sleep quality. We aimed to investigate different sleep disorders and their combination as risk factors for different types of cancer.

STUDY DESIGN

Prospective cohort study.

METHODS

In this prospective cohort study, we included 78,232 participants. A self-reported questionnaire was used to address insomnia, daytime sleepiness, snoring, and sleep duration. Overall sleep quality was evaluated by summarising these four sleep parameters. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to estimate the hazard ratios and their 95% confidence intervals for determining the effect of the overall sleep-quality score and its components on the risk of incident cancer.

RESULTS

During a median follow-up of 5.67 years, 1266 participants were diagnosed with incident cancer. Compared to participants in the best sleep-quality score group, participants in the worst sleep-quality score group had a higher subsequent risk of overall cancer, and colorectal, breast, uterine or uterine cervical, prostatic, kidney, and bladder cancer. Participants with insomnia and snoring status had an elevated risk of head and neck, breast, uterine or uterine cervical, prostatic, kidney, bladder cancer, and lymphoma.

CONCLUSIONS

Poor overall sleep-quality scores as well as poor scores for the scale's components, including insomnia and snoring status, elevated the risk of overall and several specific-site cancers.

The Effects of Acute Sleep Curtailment on Salt Taste Measures and Relationships with Energy-Corrected Sodium Intake: A Randomized Cross-Over Trial with Methodology Validation

(1) Background: Sleep may be a factor that influences the taste-dietary intake relationship. The effect of sleep on salt taste measures has not been adequately studied, and no standardized methodology has been developed for measuring salt taste preference. (2) Methods: A sweet taste forced-choice paired-comparison test was adapted and validated to determine salt taste preference. In a randomized cross-over trial, participants slept a curtailed night (33% reduction in sleep duration) and a habitual night, confirmed by a single-channel electroencephalograph. Salt taste tests were conducted the day after each sleep condition using five aqueous NaCl solutions. One 24-h dietary recall was obtained after each taste test. (3) Results: The adapted forced-choice paired-comparison tracking test reliably determined salt taste preference. No changes in salt taste function (intensity slopes: p = 0.844) or hedonic measures (liking slopes: p = 0.074; preferred NaCl concentrations: p = 0.092) were observed after the curtailed sleep condition compared to habitual sleep. However, sleep curtailment disrupted the association between liking slope and energy-corrected Na intake (p < 0.001). (4) Conclusions: The present study serves as the first step toward more standardized taste assessments to facilitate comparison between studies and suggests accounting for sleep when exploring taste-diet relationships.

Timing of Meals and Sleep in the Mediterranean Population: The Effect of Taste, Genetics, Environmental Determinants, and Interactions on Obesity Phenotypes

Circadian rhythms regulate the sleep-wake and feeding-fasting cycles. Sleep and feeding constitute a complex cycle that is determined by several factors. Despite the importance of sleep duration and mealtimes for many obesity phenotypes, most studies on dietary patterns have not investigated the contribution of these variables to the phenotypes analyzed. Likewise, they have not investigated the factors related to sleep or mealtimes. Thus, our aims were to investigate the link between taste perception and eating/sleep patterns and to analyze the effect of the interactions between sleep/meal patterns and genetic factors on obesity phenotypes. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis on 412 adults from the Mediterranean population. We measured taste perception (bitter, sweet, salty, sour, and umami) and assessed sleep duration and waketime. The midpoint of sleep and social jetlag was computed. From the self-reported timing of meals, we estimated the eating window, eating midpoint, and eating jetlag. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was measured with a validated score. Selected polymorphisms in the TAS2R38, CLOCK, and FTO genes were determined, and their associations and interactions with relevant phenotypes were analyzed. We found various associations between temporal eating, sleep patterns, and taste perception. A higher bitter taste perception was associated with an earlier eating midpoint (p = 0.001), breakfast time (p = 0.043), dinner time (p = 0.009), waketime (p < 0.001), and midpoint of sleep (p = 0.009). Similar results were observed for the bitter taste polymorphism TAS2R38-rs713598, a genetic instrumental variable for bitter perception, increasing the causality of the associations. Moreover, significant gene-sleep interactions were detected between the midpoint of sleep and the TAS2R38-rs713598 (p = 0.032), FTO-rs9939609 (p = 0.037), and CLOCK-rs4580704 (p = 0.004) polymorphisms which played a role in determining obesity phenotypes. In conclusion, our study provided more information on the sleep and mealtime patterns of the general Spanish Mediterranean population than on their main relationships. Moreover, we were able to show significant associations between taste perception, specifically bitter taste; sleep time; and mealtimes as well as an interaction between sleep time and several genetic variants linked to obesity phenotypes. However, additional research is needed to better characterize the causality and mechanisms behind these associations.

The Influence of Nutritional Status and Sleep Quality on Gustatory Function in Older Adults

Background and Objectives: Age-related declines in taste function are common. Taste acuity can be affected by nutritional status and sleep quality. This research aims to examine the effect of nutritional status and sleep quality on gustatory function in community-dwelling older adults. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 119 community-dwelling older adults (50.4% of whom were female). The gustatory function was evaluated using four liquid taste solutions (sweet, bitter, sour, and salty) each at four different concentrations and the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was applied. Additionally, anthropometric measurements were taken. Results: The mean scores on the gustatory test for the sweet, bitter, sour, and salty tastes were 2.11 ± 1.27, 2.12 ± 1.03, 2.28 ± 1.03, and 1.98 ± 1.41, respectively. There were significant differences according to gender, polypharmacy, nutritional status, and sleep quality in identifying sweet tastes (all p < 0.05). It was also found that females and participants without polypharmacy had better scores for bitter tastes. When the gustatory functions were evaluated according to BMI classification, it was determined that underweight participants had a higher sour taste score than the obese ones. Multiple regression analysis revealed that age, MNA score, PSQI score, and gender accounted for a total of 20.4% of the variance in the sweet taste score. Conclusions: Determining the relationship between taste function, nutritional status, and sleep quality in older adults is important in terms of developing new strategies for older adults who have these problems.

Restless legs syndrome and perceived olfactory and taste dysfunction: A community-based study

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) has been suggested as a prodromal symptom of Parkinson disease (PD). Olfactory or taste dysfunction can also occur preceding PD diagnosis. However, whether RLS is associated with chemosensory dysfunction remains unknown. We thus aim to investigate the association between RLS and perceived olfactory and taste dysfunction.

METHODS

We performed a cross-sectional analysis including 90,337 Chinese adults free of neurodegenerative diseases in the Kailuan study in 2016. Presence of RLS was defined using revised RLS diagnostic criteria or the Cambridge-Hopkins questionnaire for RLS. Perceived olfactory and taste dysfunction was collected via a questionnaire. The association between RLS and perceived olfactory and taste dysfunction was assessed using logistic regression model, adjusting for potential cofounders such as age, sex, and medical history.

RESULTS

RLS was associated with high odds of having perceived olfactory and/or taste dysfunction (adjusted odds ratio = 5.92, 95% confidence interval = 3.11-11.3). The significant association persisted when using the Cambridge-Hopkins questionnaire (adjusted odds ratio = 5.55, 95% confidence interval = 2.37-13.0) or when excluding participants with major chronic diseases.

CONCLUSIONS

RLS was associated with increased odds of perceived olfactory and taste dysfunction.
