Abstract
Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder with poorly detailed subtypes/dimensions, such as religious OCD (ROCD). To date, little is known about ROCD characteristics. This work aimed to describe the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, along with the religiosity and spirituality, of Lebanese Muslim citizens diagnosed with OCD and exhibiting religious symptoms. Methods: Participants were Lebanese Muslims, outpatients with OCD and religious symptoms, aged 18 or above, who could complete a questionnaire. Exclusion criteria were as follows: other psychiatric disorders and cognitive or physical impairments preventing participation. They completed a questionnaire including the 25-item Arabic Scale of Obsessions and Compulsions (10 questions addressing obsessions, 10 questions addressing compulsions, and 5 filler items, all of which were rated on a 4-point Likert scale, with higher total scores indicating increasing severity), the 26-item Spiritual Involvement and Beliefs Scale (rated on a 5-point Likert scale, with higher scores indicating higher spirituality), and questions assessing sociodemographic, clinical, and religiosity variables. Results: Fifty adults (62% females, 52% aged between 18 and 29 years) completed the study. They had mild (26%), moderate (48%), and severe (26%) OCD symptoms. The majority attended religious school at least at one point in their life and described a moderate to very high degree of self-religiosity and parental religiosity. Group comparisons (patients with mild vs. moderate vs. severe OCD symptoms) showed significant differences with regard to a family history of psychiatric disorders (p = 0.043), the frequency of self-questioning if they prayed correctly (p = 0.005), a higher rating of partial ablution repetition (p = 0.006), and the frequency of partial ablution repetitions (p = 0.041). No significant group differences were noted with regard to sociodemographic or spirituality outcomes. The prevalence of religious doubts (i.e., self-questioning if praying correctly) and specific rituals (partial ablution repetition) among severe OCD patients were 100% (13/13) and 77% (10/13), respectively. Conclusions: The results suggest a link between specific religious practices and OCD severity, underscoring the need for culturally sensitive approaches in diagnosing and treating ROCD.

Abstract
It is important for psychiatric-mental health nurses and advanced practice nurses to be familiar with clinical presentations and recommended treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children and adolescents. The current article provides a brief overview of symptom presentation, diagnostic criteria, etiology, comorbidity, and prevalence in this population. Special attention is given to one of the lesser-known clinical presentations, scrupulosity. A scrupulosity theme entails intrusive thoughts that center around a religious, ethical, and/or moral framework. A vignette is provided to illustrate a scrupulosity presentation. Abstract
Although exposure and response prevention (ERP) is considered the gold standard for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), it is rarely used in clinical practice. Therapists' beliefs about ERP affect its utilization, as previous research suggests, but the role of therapists' cognitive biases is unclear. In particular, susceptibility to thought-action fusion (TAF) may be related to the underutilization of ERP in OCD. Therapists (N = 353) were divided into those recommending (ERP+, n = 228) and not recommending ERP (ERP-, n = 125) as treatment for an OCD case example. TAF in therapists was assessed using behavioral and self-report measures (TAFS). TAF was higher in the ERP- than the ERP+ group, with a small to moderate effect size (0.2 ≤ d ≤ 0.4). ERP- therapists showed more avoidance and neutralizing behavior and a stronger emotional response than the ERP+ therapists during the experimental task. Moreover, higher TAF as measured by the TAFS was associated at a small magnitude with lower likelihood of using ERP in the therapists' actual clinical practices. Therapists' cognitive biases should be addressed in their training in order to increase the dissemination of evidence-based treatment (i.e., ERP) and thus improve the treatment of OCD.

Abstract
Scrupulous obsessions are a prominent presentation of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Previous conceptualizations of scrupulosity have indicated that it belongs to the unacceptable thoughts dimension, which pertains to sexual, violent, and religious obsessive themes. However, research suggests that scrupulous symptoms may differ from other unacceptable thoughts symptoms, necessitating the need for targeted and thorough assessment. We added a Scrupulous or Religious Thoughts subscale (DOCS-SR) to the Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS) and tested its factorial structure, psychometric properties, and clinical correlates in a nonclinical and clinical sample. In the first study, nonclinical participants (N = 203) completed the DOCS-SR, which was subjected to an exploratory factor analysis. Analyses revealed that the DOCS-SR reflected a one-factor solution and possessed acceptable internal consistency, as well as strong convergent validity with clinical correlates of OCD. In the second study, we administered the DOCS, as well as the DOCS-SR to a clinical sample (N = 314). An exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis both suggested that the four subscales and additional DOCS-SR represented a five-factor solution. Internal consistency and convergent validity were strong. The DOCS Unacceptable Thoughts subscale and the DOCS-SR shared a moderate correlation but evidenced differences in associations with other correlates. This suggested both convergent and divergent validity. Collectively, our results support the utility of examining the individual components of the unacceptable thoughts dimension of OCD for effective assessment and treatment planning.

Abstract
Abstract
This article provides clinical guidelines for basic knowledge and skills essential for successful work with clients who have obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) across ethnic, racial and religious differences. We emphasise multiculturalist and anti-racist approaches and the role of culture in shaping the presentation of OCD in clients. Several competencies are discussed to help clinicians differentiate between behaviour that is consistent with group norms versus behaviour that is excessive and psychopathological in nature. Symptom presentation, mental health literacy and explanatory models may differ across cultural groups. The article also highlights the possibility of violating client beliefs and values during cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and subsequently offers strategies to mitigate such problems, such as consulting community members, clergy, religious scholars and other authoritative sources. Finally, there is a discussion of how clinicians can help clients from diverse populations overcome a variety of obstacles and challenges faced in the therapeutic context, including stigma and cultural mistrust.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Scrupulosity is a common yet understudied presentation of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) that is characterized by obsessions and compulsions focused on religion. Despite the clinical relevance of scrupulosity to some presentations of OCD, little is known about the association between scrupulosity and symptom severity across religious groups. AIMS The present study examined the relationship between (a) religious affiliation and OCD symptoms, (b) religious affiliation and scrupulosity, and (c) scrupulosity and OCD symptoms across religious affiliations. METHOD One-way ANOVAs, Pearson correlations and regression-based moderation analyses were conducted to evaluate these relationships in 180 treatment-seeking adults with OCD who completed measures of scrupulosity and OCD symptom severity. RESULTS Scrupulosity, but not OCD symptoms in general, differed across religious affiliations. Individuals who identified as Catholic reported the highest level of scrupulosity relative to individuals who identified as Protestant, Jewish or having no religion. Scrupulosity was associated with OCD symptom severity globally and across symptom dimensions, and the magnitude of these relationships differed by religious affiliation. CONCLUSIONS Findings are discussed in terms of the dimensionality of scrupulosity, need for further assessment instruments, implications for assessment and intervention, and the consideration of religious identity in treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Mental contamination, which occurs in the absence of contact with a contaminant, has a moral element. Previous studies evoked feelings of mental contamination via listening to a scenario, which described a non-consensual kiss. Since mental contamination has a moral element, we tested the effects of the level of religiosity on feelings of mental contamination and related variables in an experimental design. METHODS Female undergraduates of high religiosity (n = 48) and low religiosity (n = 44) were randomly assigned to listen to one of two audio recordings involving a consensual or non-consensual kiss from a man described as moral. RESULTS Mental contamination feelings were evoked successfully in both groups. Effects of scenario condition and religiosity level were seen in mental contamination and related negative feelings. Participants who imagined a non-consensual kiss reported greatest feelings of mental contamination, and internal and external negative feelings. More importantly, high religiosity resulted in greater feelings of mental contamination, internal negative feelings, as well as urges to wash and actual washing behaviors. LIMITATIONS The current study was conducted on non-clinical Muslim females. This limits the generalization of the findings to the wider population. CONCLUSIONS Mental contamination and related feelings can be seen in different forms at different levels of religiosity.

Abstract
<b><i>Introdução:</i></b> A relação entre perturbação obsessivo-compulsiva e religião tem vindo a ser estudada, quer na perturbação obsessivo-compulsiva com temas de religião quer nas outras formas de expressão da doença. Com este estudo pretendeu-se analisar a forma como as crenças religiosas podem influenciar as obsessões e compulsões de cada paciente, e vice-versa. <b><i>Métodos:</i></b> Foi efetuada uma pesquisa na PubMed seguida da aplicação de diversos critérios de acordo com as regras PRISMA para revisão sistemática. Foram selecionados 14 artigos que foram interpretados e relacionados entre si. <b><i>Resultados:</i></b> Verificou-se que existe uma estreita relação entre a religião e a perturbação obsessivo-compulsiva, existindo, contudo, um pequeno número de estudos que não confirma esta associação. A relação entre a religião e a perturbação obsessivo-compulsiva pode ser conceptualizada como causa ou como consequência, verificando-se que diferentes tipos de crenças têm diferentes efeitos no pensamento e, por esse meio, influenciam a apresentação clínica da doença. <b><i>Discussão:</i></b> Em suma, a perturbação obsessivo-compulsiva é fortemente influenciada pelas crenças religiosas dos pacientes. Futuras investigações poderão ajudar a esclarecer esta interação com vista a melhor compreender e tratar os doentes com elevados níveis de religiosidade.

Abstract
The current paper presents literature relevant to the relationship of religiosity, spirituality, and personal beliefs with mental health and, in particular, anxiety disorders as an empirical narrative review, providing an overview on the most important and clinically relevant research results on the topic. The relationship between religiosity/spirituality, personal beliefs (ie, magical ideation and paranormal beliefs), and mental health has lately been studied extensively, and results have indicated significant associations among these variables. However, scientific approaches to this field are complex and multidimensional, partly leading to poor operationalization, incomparable data, and contradictory results. Literature demonstrates that higher religiosity/spirituality and magical ideation scores have often been associated with increased obsessive–compulsive traits. Similar results could not be confidently replicated for other anxiety disorders. However, it is still unclear if these differences suggest a specific association with obsessive–compulsive traits and reflect deviating etiopathogenetic and cognitive aspects between obsessive–compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders, or if these results are biased through other factors. Religiosity/spirituality and personal beliefs constitute important parameters of human experience and deserve greater consideration in the psychotherapeutic treatment of psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
A moral/religious subtype of obsessive compulsive disorder has been termed as scrupulosity by mental health professionals. Since ultimate feared consequence in scrupulous individuals is religious or moral in nature, it also presents interesting and difficult issue for religious authorities. This article focuses on various aspects of scrupulosity that have until now been poorly conceptualized in Islamic world and provides a conceptual cognitive framework and analysis of scrupulosity according to Islamic sources.

Abstract
Few studies have systematically examined the covert neutralizing strategies that serve to maintain and exacerbate the frequency and distress related to intrusive thoughts. Given the lack of research in this area, this study aimed to highlight development and maintenance factors for one such strategy, compensatory prayer, to inform assessment and treatment of related obsessional phenomena. We used a multimethod approach to examine the predictors and function of prayer when it is used in response to negative intrusive thoughts. Participants were 85 undergraduate students (ages 18–55 years) who self-identified with a branch of Christianity. In addition to self-report measures, participants were administered an in vivo negative thought induction and were subsequently asked about their use of compensatory prayer behaviors. Results indicated that religiosity, intrinsic religious motivation, and moral thought–action fusion (TAF) positively predicted the use of prayer, with moral TAF emerging as a unique predictor and a complete mediator between religiosity and the use of prayer. Regarding the function of prayer, results indicated that when prayer is used maladaptively (i.e., negative coping style), it is associated with higher scores on religious measures and moral TAF, as well as more frequent engagement in prayer, and a greater reduction in anxiety postprayer. Surprisingly, likelihood TAF was not found to be related to the use or function of prayer. Results are discussed in terms of certain religious teachings and TAF-related beliefs, neurobiological explanations for our pattern of findings, and clinical implications for religious-related intrusive thoughts. Future directions and limitations are also discussed.

Abstract
Cognitive biases, such as thought-action fusion (TAF), play a crucial role in the cognitive-behavioral model of obsessional symptoms and have been shown to prospectively increase the risk of developing such symptoms. Much less research, however, has examined factors that might lead to the development of the cognitive biases themselves. This study aimed to replicate and extend existing work on correlates of moral (thinking about something is the moral equivalent of the corresponding action) and likelihood (thinking about a particular event increases the probability that this event will occur) TAF. A large sample of unscreened participants (N = 407) completed a measure of TAF, as well as measures of religiosity, motivation for religion, parental psychological control, and parental guilt induction. Results indicated that religion-related variables predicted the moral TAF, whereas parenting strategies were associated with likelihood TAF. Intrinsic motivation for religion also mediated the relationship between religiosity and moral TAF. Findings are discussed in terms of developmental psychopathology and limitations are addressed.

Abstract
The relation between religiosity/spirituality (R/S), personal beliefs, and mental health has been extensively studied. However, concerning anxiety disorders (ADs), empirical evidence is scarce. This study investigated the differences in R/S and magical/paranormal ideation among obsessive-compulsive disorder patients (OCD; n = 49), patients with other ADs (n = 36), and healthy controls (HCs; n = 35). Our results suggest negative religious coping as being the only parameter showing significantly higher scores in OCD and AD participants in comparison with HCs. Negative religious coping reflects negative functional expressions of R/S in stressful situations. Logistic regression also suggested negative religious coping as the strongest predictor of group affiliation to the nonhealthy group. Further results show no significant differences between other R/S, magical, and paranormal ideation traits among groups. This study underlines an important role of negative religious coping in ADs yet does not clearly indicate a specific causality. Religious-sensitive treatment targeting cognitive aspects of negative religious coping are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The cognitive-behavioural perspective on obsessions recognizes that certain cultural experiences such as adherence to religious beliefs about the importance of maintaining strict mental control might increase the propensity for obsessional symptoms via the adoption of faulty appraisals and beliefs about the unacceptability and control of unwanted intrusive thoughts. Few studies have directly investigated this proposition, especially in a non-Western Muslim sample. METHOD In the present study high religious, low religious and religious school Canadian Christian and Turkish Muslim students were compared on measures of OCD symptoms, obsessive beliefs, guilt, religiosity, and negative affect. RESULTS Analysis revealed that religiosity had a specific relationship with obsessional but not anxious or depressive symptoms in both samples, although the highly religious Muslim students reported more compulsive symptoms than highly religious Christians. In both samples the relationship between religiosity and obsessionality was mediated by importance/control of thoughts and responsibility/threat beliefs as well as generalized guilt. LIMITATIONS The sample composition was limited to non-clinical undergraduates and only two major religions were considered without recognition of denominational differences. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that the tendency for highly religious Christians and Muslims to experience greater obsessionality is related to their heightened sense of personal guilt and beliefs that they are responsible for controlling unwanted, threatening intrusive thoughts.

Abstract
Scrupulosity is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) characterized by a tendency to have persistent doubts about God, sin, and the adequacy of one's religious behaviors and devotion. To date, no published studies have compared scrupulosity in high- and low-religious Muslim and Christian samples. In the present study religious school students as well as high- and low-religious university students in Turkey and Canada were compared on the Penn Inventory of Scrupulosity (PIOS), Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire (OBQ-44), and symptom measures of obssesionality and negative affect. Between-group comparisons revealed that the highly religious Turkish sample scored significantly higher than the highly religious Canadian students on the PIOS Fear of God but not the Fear of Sin subscale. Separate multiple regression analyses revealed that the Clark-Beck Obsessive Compulsive Inventory (CBOCI) Obsessions subscale, OBQ-44 Importance and Control of Thoughts subscale, and guilt were significant unique predictors of PIOS scrupulosity. These findings suggest that subtle differences exist in how scrupulosity is manifested in Islamic and Christian believers.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this review is to highlight that the indifferent, undecided, and rarely positive attitude of psychiatrists toward the relationship between psychiatry, religion and spirituality stands in contradiction to extensive data. RECENT FINDINGS The evidence reveals a largely positive relationship between religiosity/spirituality and different indices of health. Despite the attitude of psychiatrists in general, the neglect of this fact is difficult to justify. However, religious and spiritual beliefs are powerful forces and may impart harmful as well as beneficial effects. SUMMARY Whatever disagreements there might be on definition and use, spirituality and religion are concerned with the core beliefs, values and experiences of human beings. A consideration of their relevance should, therefore, be a central part of clinical and academic psychiatry.

Abstract
The earliest descriptions of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were religious, as was the understanding of their origins. With the emancipation, religion in OCD was relegated to its status today: a less common symptom of OCD in most Western societies known as scrupulosity. The frequency of scrupulosity in OCD varies in the literature from 0% to 93% of cases, and this variability seems predicated on the importance of religious belief and observance in the community examined. Despite the similarities between religious ritual and compulsions, the evidence to date that religion increases the risk of the development of OCD is scarce. Scrupulosity is presented as a classic version of OCD, with obsessions and compulsions, distress, and diminished functioning similar to those of other forms of OCD. The differentiation between normal religiosity and scrupulosity is presented, and the unique aspects of cognitive-behavioral therapy in treating scrupulosity, especially in religious populations, are reviewed.
