Relationships of the group velocity of the time-reversed Lamb wave with bone properties in cortical bone in vitro

Pulsed Vibro-Acoustic Analysis Technique for Monitoring Bone Health in Preterm Infants: A Pilot Study

Despite advances in neonatal care, metabolic bone disease of prematurity (MBDP) remains a common problem in preterm infants. The development of non-invasive and affordable diagnostic approaches can be highly beneficial in the diagnosis and management of preterm infants at risk of MBDP. In this study, we present an ultrasound method called pulsed vibro-acoustic analysis to investigate the progression of bone mineralization in infants over time versus weight and postmenstrual age. The proposed pulsed vibro-acoustic analysis method is used to evaluate the vibrational characteristics of the bone. This method uses the acoustic radiation force of ultrasound to vibrate the bone. The generated acoustic waves are detected using a hydrophone placed on the skin over the tibia. The frequency of vibration and the speeds of received acoustic waves have information regarding the material property of the bone. We examined the feasibility of this method through an in vivo study consisting of 25 preterm and 10 full term infants. The pulsed vibro-acoustic data were acquired longitudinally in preterm infants with multiple visits and at a single visit in full term infants. Speed of sound and mean peak frequency of slow and fast sound waves recorded by hydrophone were used to analyze bone mineralization progress. Linear mixed model was used for statistical analysis in characterizing the mineralization progress in preterm infants compared to data from full term subjects. Significance changes in wave parameters (speed of sound and mean peak frequency) with respect to the postmenstrual age and weight in preterm infants were observed with p-values less than 0.05. Statistical significances in speed of sound measurement for both fast and slow waves were observed between preterm and full term infants, with p-values of <0.01 and 0.02, respectively. The results of this pilot study indicate the potential use of vibro-acoustic analysis for monitoring the progression of bone mineralization in preterm infants.

Study of Ultrasonic Guided Wave Propagation in Bone Composite Structures for Revealing Osteoporosis Diagnostic Indicators

Tubular bones are layered waveguide structures composed of soft tissue, cortical and porous bone tissue, and bone marrow. Ultrasound diagnostics of such biocomposites are based on the guided wave excitation and registration by piezoelectric transducers applied to the waveguide surface. Meanwhile, the upper sublayers shield the diseased interior, creating difficulties in extracting information about its weakening from the surface signals. To overcome these difficulties, we exploit the advantages of the Green's matrix-based approach and adopt the methods and algorithms developed for the guided wave structural health monitoring of industrial composites. Based on the computer models implementing this approach and experimental measurements performed on bone phantoms, we analyze the feasibility of using different wave characteristics to detect hidden diagnostic signs of developing osteoporosis. It is shown that, despite the poor excitability of the most useful modes associated with the diseased inner layers, the use of the improved matrix pencil method combined with objective functions based on the Green's matrix allows for effective monitoring of changes in the elastic moduli of the deeper sublayers. We also note the sensitivity and monotonic dependence of the resonance response frequencies on the degradation of elastic properties, making them a promising indicator for osteoporosis diagnostics.

Ultrasonic Guided Waves in Bone: A Decade of Advancement in Review

The use of guided wave ultrasonography as a means to assess cortical bone quality has been a significant practice in bone quantitative ultrasound for more than 20 years. In this article, the key developments within the technology of ultrasonic guided waves (UGW) in long bones during the past decade are documented. The covered topics include data acquisition configurations available for measuring bone guided waveforms, signal processing techniques applied to bone UGW, numerical modeling of ultrasonic wave propagation in cortical long bones, formulation of inverse approaches to extract bone properties from observed ultrasonic signals, and clinical studies to establish the technology's application and efficacy. The review concludes by highlighting specific challenging problems and future research directions. In general, the primary purpose of this work is to provide a comprehensive overview of bone guided-wave ultrasound, especially for newcomers to this scientific field.

Mode Separation for Multimodal Ultrasonic Lamb Waves Using Dispersion Compensation and Independent Component Analysis of Forth-Order Cumulant

Ultrasonic Lamb wave testing has been successfully applied in nondestructive testing. However, because of Lamb wave multimodal and dispersion characteristics, the received signals are often multimodal and overlapping, which makes them very complicated. This paper proposes a mode separation method by combining dispersion compensation with the independent component analysis of fourth-order cumulant. Taking two-mode overlapped signals as an example, the single-mode dispersion compensation is performed according to the measured distance difference between the two sets of signals. The two sets of signals are returned to the same distance. The fourth-order cumulant independent component analysis method is further used to process the Lamb wave signals of different superposition situations at the same distance. The corresponding mode signal contained in the two sets of signals is separated through the joint diagonalization of the whitened fourth-order cumulant matrix. The different modes are compensated and separated successively, achieving the multimodal signal separation. Experimental results in steel plates show that the presented method can accurately achieve mode separation for the multimodal overlapping Lamb waves. This is helpful for the signal processing of multimodal Lamb waves.
