Ecological Momentary Assessment Of State Fluctuations In Mindfulness And Symptoms In Psychotic Disorders

Development and Initial Validation of the State Four Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire

The current research aimed to provide initial psychometric validation of a new multifaceted mindfulness questionnaire (referred to as the State Four Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, or the "state-4FMQ" for short) adapted from the commonly used Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (referred to as the "trait-FFMQ"). The research was divided into two pre-registered studies. In both, undergraduates partook in a 20-minute mindfulness meditation (via audio recording), and then answered questions, including the state-4FMQ, pertaining to their experience during the meditation. In Study 2, participants additionally partook in a 20-minute control condition. The state-4FMQ was developed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA; Study 1) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA; Study 2). In Study 2, a short-form of the state-4FMQ was established, and several additional forms of measurement validity were tested. EFA and CFA results supported a four-factor structure, which was identical to the trait-FFMQ with the exclusion of Nonreactivity. This newly created state-4FMQ, and its short-form, showed good internal consistency as well as convergent, predictive, and construct validity. In addition, it was found that some facets, more than others, predicted momentary well-being. The validity of the state-4FMQ shows that it can be used to measure multiple facets of state mindfulness across a variety of situations.

Relations between psychosis and emotion regulation in daily life: A systematic review and meta-analyses of studies using experience sampling methods

Research has shown that heightened emotionality often precedes psychotic experiences. Understanding how individuals cope with these emotions is crucial for psychosis. While prior studies on emotion regulation (ER) and psychosis have mainly relied on self-report questionnaires, recent research has increasingly utilised daily life methods. This systematic review and meta-analysis seek to examine the relationship between daily ER and psychotic experiences. In total, 15 studies were included in the meta-analysis (21 in the systematic review). The results of Experience Sampling Methods (ESM) studies indicated that ER strategies of avoidance, reappraisal, repetitive thinking, and emotional suppression are not associated with psychotic experiences in daily life. The effect was not moderated by type of sample (clinical vs non-clinical), symptom (hallucination vs delusions), relation (contemporaneous vs perspective), or other methodological variables. Acceptance was found to be negatively associated with psychotic experiences, but the effect was small. These results indicate that ER in daily life might not impact directly on psychotic experiences. The results are discussed in light of conceptual and methodological limitations in the field.

Using Ecological Momentary Assessments to Study How Daily Fluctuations in Psychological States Impact Stress, Well-Being, and Health

Despite great interest in how dynamic fluctuations in psychological states such as mood, social safety, energy, present-focused attention, and burnout impact stress, well-being, and health, most studies examining these constructs use retrospective assessments with relatively long time-lags. Here, we discuss how ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) address methodological issues associated with retrospective reports to help reveal dynamic associations between psychological states at small timescales that are often missed in stress and health research. In addition to helping researchers characterize daily and within-day fluctuations and temporal dynamics between different health-relevant processes, EMAs can elucidate mechanisms through which interventions reduce stress and enhance well-being. EMAs can also be used to identify changes that precede critical health events, which can in turn be used to deliver ecological momentary interventions, or just-in-time interventions, to help prevent such events from occurring. To enable this work, we provide examples of scales and single-item questions used in EMA studies, recommend study designs and statistical approaches that capitalize on EMA data, and discuss limitations of EMA methods. In doing so, we aim to demonstrate how, when used carefully, EMA methods are well poised to greatly advance our understanding of how intrapersonal dynamics affect stress levels, well-being, and human health.
