Investigation of factors affecting the adsorption of functional molecules onto gel silicas

Reactive Simulations of Silica Functionalization with Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Reactive molecular dynamics simulations are used to model the covalent functionalization of amorphous silica with aromatic hydrocarbons. Simulations show that the surface density of silanol-terminated phenyl, naphthyl, and anthracenyl molecules is lower than the maximum value calculated based on molecule geometry, and the simulation densities decrease faster with the number of aromatic rings than the geometric densities. The trends are analyzed in terms of the surface-silanol bonding configurations, tilt angles, local conformational ordering, and aggregation of surface-bound molecules under steady-state conditions. Results show that the surface density is affected by both the size and symmetry of the aromatic hydrocarbons. The correlations among bonding, orientation, and surface density identified here may guide the selection or design of molecules for functionalized surfaces.

Gas-Phase and Surface-Initiated Reactions of Household Bleach and Terpene-Containing Cleaning Products Yield Chlorination and Oxidation Products Adsorbed onto Indoor Relevant Surfaces

The use of household bleach cleaning products results in emissions of highly oxidative gaseous species, such as hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and chlorine (Cl2). These species readily react with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as limonene, one of the most abundant compounds found in indoor enviroments. In this study, reactions of HOCl/Cl2 with limonene in the gas phase and on indoor relevant surfaces were investigated. Using an environmental Teflon chamber, we show that silica (SiO2), a proxy for window glass, and rutile (TiO2), a component of paint and self-cleaning surfaces, act as a reservoir for adsorption of gas-phase products formed between HOCl/Cl2 and limonene. Furthermore, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) shows that the gas-phase reaction products of HOCl/Cl2 and limonene readily adsorb on both SiO2 and TiO2. Surface-mediated reactions can also occur, leading to the formation of new chlorine- and oxygen-containing products. Transmission Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of adsorption and desorption of bleach and terpene oxidation products indicates that these chlorine- and oxygen-containing products strongly adsorb on both SiO2 and TiO2 surfaces for days, providing potential sources of human exposure and sinks for additional heterogeneous reactions.

Adsorption of 6-MHO on two indoor relevant surface materials: SiO2 and TiO2

The compound 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (6-MHO) is a product of skin oil ozonolysis and is of significance in understanding the role of human occupants in the indoor environment. We present a joint computational and experimental study investigating the adsorption of 6-MHO on two model indoor relevant surfaces, SiO₂, a model for a glass window, and TiO₂, a component of paint and self-cleaning surfaces. Our classical force field-based molecular dynamics, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, and FTIR absorption spectra indicate 6-MHO can adsorb on to both of these surfaces via hydrogen and π-hydrogen bonds and is quite stable due to the linear geometry of 6-MHO. Detailed analysis of 6-MHO on the SiO₂ surface shows that relative humidity does not impact surface adsorption and adsorbed water does not displace 6-MHO from the hydroxylated SiO₂ surface. Additionally, the desorption kinetics of 6-MHO from the hydroxylated SiO₂ surface is compared to other compounds found in indoor environments and 6-MHO is shown to desorb with a first order rate constant that is approximately four times slower than that of limonene, but six times faster than that of carvone. In addition, our joint results indicate 6-MHO forms a stronger interaction with the TiO₂ surface compared to the SiO₂ surface. This study suggests that skin oil ozonolysis products can partition to indoor surfaces leading to the formation of organic films.

Method development and validation for the determination of sulfites and sulfates on the surface of mineral atmospheric samples using reverse-phase liquid chromatography

Earlier studies suggest that SO₂ gas reacts at the surface of mineral dust and forms sulfites or bisulfites, which are then converted to sulfates. In order to monitor and quantify the amounts of both sulfites and sulfates formed on the surface of mineral dusts of volcanic and desert origins an accurate and precise reversed-phase liquid chromatography method was developed and validated to extract, stabilize and individually analyze sulfites and sulfates initially present on the surface of dusts exposed to SO₂. The method was developed on a 25 mm Restek Ultra Column C18, Particle size: 5 μm, I.D. 4.60 mm column which was dynamically coated with 1.0 mM cetylpyridinium chloride in 7% acetonitrile solution to produce a charged surface as recommended in the literature. Mobile phase used: 1 mM Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate at pH 6.5 at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min with negative UV-Vis detection at 255 nm in 15 min. The method was validated for specificity, linearity and range, injection repeatability, stability, robustness, limit of detection and limit of quantitation, and sample preparation and extraction reproducibility. The method was adapted for straight sulfite and sulfate quantification: (i) of environmental samples, and (ii) natural samples additionally exposed to SO₂ gas in a dedicated laboratory setup. The method was then successfully applied to quantify sulfites and sulfates on natural volcanic and a desert dust samples both collected in the environment and additionally exposed to SO₂ gas in the laboratory. The method can be efficiently used to identify sulfites and sulfates on fresh volcanic ash following an eruption, on aeolian desert dust exposed to industrial pollutants, as well as for laboratory investigations of sulfite and sulfate formation on the surface of minerals and natural dusts of different origins.

What Is the Driving Force behind the Adsorption of Hydrophobic Molecules on Hydrophilic Surfaces?

The adsorption of limonene, a common organic compound found in indoor air, on hydrophilic surfaces such as glass (SiO₂), a prevalent surface in the indoor environment, is poorly understood. In this study, we have investigated the interaction of limonene and three other cyclic hydrocarbons (cyclohexane, cyclohexene, and benzene) on hydroxylated SiO₂ using infrared spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. Experimental results show that there is an interaction between these cyclic hydrocarbons and surface hydroxyl groups. AIMD simulations demonstrate that all of the cyclic molecules, except for cyclohexane, π-hydrogen bond with surface hydroxyl groups while cyclohexane interacts with the surface OH groups through dispersion forces. According to experiments and simulations, the intermolecular interaction between limonene and SiO₂ is significantly stronger than those of other compounds explored. This study provides an understanding of some of the driving forces behind the formation of organic coatings on glass surfaces important in indoor environments.

Lipid bilayer membrane with atomic step structure: supported bilayer on a step-and-terrace TiO2(100) surface

The formation of a supported planar lipid bilayer (SPLB) and its morphology on step-and-terrace rutile TiO 2(100) surfaces were investigated by fluorescence microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The TiO 2(100) surfaces consisting of atomic steps and flat terraces were formed on a rutile TiO 2 single-crystal wafer by a wet treatment and annealing under a flow of oxygen. An intact vesicular layer formed on the TiO 2(100) surface when the surface was incubated in a sonicated vesicle suspension under the condition that a full-coverage SPLB forms on SiO 2, as reported in previous studies. However, a full-coverage, continuous, fluid SPLB was obtained on the step-and-terrace TiO 2(100) depending on the lipid concentration, incubation time, and vesicle size. The SPLB on the TiO 2(100) also has step-and-terrace morphology following the substrate structure precisely even though the SPLB is in the fluid phase and an approximately 1-nm-thick water layer exists between the SPLB and the substrate. This membrane distortion on the atomic scale affects the phase-separation structure of a binary bilayer of micrometer order. The interaction energy calculated including DLVO and non-DLVO factors shows that a lipid membrane on the TiO 2(100) gains 20 times more energy than on SiO 2. This specifically strong attraction on TiO 2 makes the fluid SPLB precisely follow the substrate structure of angstrom order.

Interfacial interactions in polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites

Interactions between sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) and a variety of probes, some of which are intended to model components of a polyurethane system, have been studied. Particular attention was given to the effect of preadsorbed water on the adsorption behavior of the probes. Flow microcalorimetry (FMC), diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) were used to monitor the adsorption process. The probe set included alcohols, amines, ethers, poly(propylene glycol) monobutyl ethers (PPG), and 4-ethylphenyl isocyanate (4-EPI). FMC revealed that the preadsorbed water molecules on undried Na-MMT hindered the adsorption of alcohol and ether probes, but had little effect on the adsorption of amines. Drying of Na-MMT to less than 0.3% w/w H2O led to an increase in heat of adsorption and generally greater retention of the probes. PPG showed strong interaction with Na-MMT due to multipoint adsorption. With dried Na-MMT, WAXS revealed that PPG of molecular weight (MW) 1000 was partly intercalated into the gallery while lower molecular weight PPG (MW 340) did not intercalate the Na-MMT. DRIFTS spectra of 4-EPI adsorbed on undried Na-MMT revealed urea linkages, indicating formation of N,N'-bis(4-ethylphenyl) urea. In contrast, with dried Na-MMT the 4-EPI formed a urethane linkage with hydroxyl groups present at the edges of the silicate platelets.

Adsorption of organic molecules on silica surface

The adsorption behaviour of various organic adsorbates on silica surface is reviewed. Most of the structural information on silica is obtained from IR spectral data and from the characteristics of water present at the silica surface. Silica surface is generally embedded with hydroxy groups and ethereal linkages, and hence considered to have a negative charged surface prone to adsorption of electron deficient species. Adsorption isotherms of the adsorbates delineate the nature of binding of the adsorbate with silica. Aromatic compounds are found to involve the pi-cloud in hydrogen bonding with silanol OH group during adsorption. Cationic and nonionic surfactants adsorb on silica surface involving hydrogen bonding. Sometimes, a polar part of the surfactants also contributes to the adsorption process. Styryl pyridinium dyes are found to anchor on silica surface in flat-on position. On modification of the silica by treating with alkali, the adsorption behaviour of cationic surfactant or polyethylene glycol changes due to change in the characteristics of silica or modified silica surface. In case of PEG-modified silica, adsolubilization of the adsorbate is observed. By using a modified adsorption equation, hemimicellization is proposed for these dyes. Adsorptions of some natural macromolecules like proteins and nucleic acids are investigated to study the hydrophobic and hydrophilic binding sites of silica. Artificial macromolecules like synthetic polymers are found to be adsorbed on silica surface due to the interaction of the multifunctional groups of the polymers with silanols. Preferential adsorption of polar adsorbates is observed in case of adsorbate mixtures. When surfactant mixtures are considered to study competitive adsorption on silica surface, critical micelle concentration of individual surfactant also contributes to the adsorption isotherm. The structural study of adsorbed surface and the thermodynamics of adsorption are given some importance in this review.

Smooth model surfaces from lignin derivatives. I. Preparation and characterization

Lignin model surfaces were prepared from aqueous alkaline solutions by spin-coating on silica wafers. Films of thicknesses between 20 and 140 nm were easily made by variations in the spinning rate or in the lignin concentration. The roughnesses of the lignin surfaces were relatively low, approximately 1.1 nm (rms) on an area of 25 microm2, as determined by atomic force microscopy imaging. The stability of the lignin films in aqueous solutions was found to be excellent. No changes in the thickness of model surfaces immersed in slightly alkaline solutions (pH 9.2) could be detected even after 5 h soaking. A 10 percent reduction in the thickness of the lignin film was observed after 5 h of exposure to a solution containing 0.1 M NaCl. This novel preparation method opens great possibilities for further fundamental studies, where interactions between lignin and other substances are of interest to investigate.
