Colloidal chirality in wormlike micellar systems exclusively originated from achiral species: Role of secondary assembly and stimulus responsivity

Fe-CP-based Catalytic Oxidation and Dissipative Self-Assembly of a Ferrocenyl Surfactant Applied in DNA Capture and Release

Dissipative self-assembly plays a vital role in fabricating intelligent and transient materials. The selection and design of the molecular structure is critical, and the introduction of valuable stimuli-responsive motifs into building blocks would bring about a novel perspective on the fuel driven nonequilibrium assemblies. For redox-responsive surfactants, novel methods of catalytic oxidation are very important for their activation/deactivation process through designing fuel input/energy dissipation. As an enzyme with a fast catalytic rate, Fe-based coordination polymers (Fe-CPs) are found to be highly effective oxidase-like enzymes to induce a reversible switch of a ferrocene-based surfactant over a wide range of temperatures and pH. This builds a bridge between the CPs materials and surfactants. Furthermore, glucose oxidase can also induce a switchable transition of a ferrocene-based surfactant. The GOX-catalyzed, glucose-fueled transient surfactant assemblies have been fabricated for many cycles, which has a successful application in a time-controlled and autonomous DNA capture and release process. The intelligent use of enzymes including CPs and GOX in ferrocene-based surfactants will pave the way for the oxidation of redox surfactants, which extends the application of stable or transient ferrocenyl self-assemblies.

Fabrication and Enzymatic Disorganization of Multiresponse Worm-Like Micelles

How to fabricate multiresponse worm-like micelles (WLMs) and the corresponding green disposal is still challenging. A strategy of fabricating the surfactant-based WLMs that can respond simultaneously to light, heat, and pH was developed by using triple-response sodium (E)-2-(4-(phenyldiazenyl)phenoxy) acetate (AzoNa) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE)-hydrolyzable palmitoylcholine bromide (PCB). Under the optimal molar ratio of AzoNa to PCB (∼0.5), the PCB-AzoNa WLMs formed with a maximum zero-shear viscosity (η0) value of about 2.1 × 105 mPa·s and an average diameter (D) of 4.1 ± 0.6 nm under conditions of 37 °C and pH 7.4. After irradiated with 365 nm UV light for 80 min, AzoNa underwent the trans-to-cis transition, by which the PCB-AzoNa WLMs was destroyed; however, the PCB-AzoNa WLMs could be reformed upon the irradiation of 455 nm blue light for 18 h or heating at 70 °C for 45 min due to the cis-to-trans isomerization of AzoNa. When pH changed from 7.4 to 2.0, the PCB-AzoNa WLMs was destroyed rapidly because of the conversion of AzoNa to the acid form of AzoH, whereas the PCB-AzoNa WLMs could be reformed after pH was restored to 7.4. The multiple responsiveness of the PCB-AzoNa WLMs was reversible due to the reversible trans-cis isomerization or protonation of AzoNa. Besides, the average D values of light, heat, and pH-regenerated PCB-AzoNa WLMs were 4.2 ± 0.7, 4.0 ± 0.7, and 4.0 ± 0.6 nm, respectively. Finally, the PCB-AzoNa WLMs could be enzymatically disorganized under conditions of 37 °C and pH 7.4 due to the BChE-catalyzed hydrolysis of PCB. We hope that the fabrication and enzymatic disorganization strategies for PCB-based multiresponse WLMs presented here will find potential applications in the formulation of antimicrobial household and personal care products containing PCB and in the green disposal of viscous waste containing PCB.

Effect of the Hydrophobic Tail of a Chiral Surfactant on the Chirality of Aggregates and on the Formation of Wormlike Micelles

The micellization of chiral enantiopure surfactants, dodecyl- N, N-dimethyl- N-( S)-(1-phenyl)ethylammonium bromide and hexadecyl- N, N-dimethyl- N-( S)-(1-phenyl)ethylammonium bromide, was investigated by circular dichroism spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry. The formation of wormlike micelles (WLMs) upon the addition of sodium salicylate to the aqueous solutions of the surfactant was observed only in the case of hexadecyl- N, N-dimethyl- N-( S)-(1-phenyl)ethylammonium bromide. The presence of WLMs was assessed by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, rheology, and isothermal titration calorimetry experiments, and their supramolecular chirality was investigated by circular dichroism spectroscopy. Depending on the length of the hydrophobic tail, molecular chirality is transferred into a different chiral supramolecular trait. Our findings demonstrate that hydrophobic interactions by controlling the organization and functions of self-assemblies also control the transcription of the chiral information from molecules to complex supramolecular systems.
