Growth dynamics of microbubbles on microcavity arrays by solvent exchange: Experiments and numerical simulations

Femtoliter oil droplets act as CO2 micropumps for uninterrupted electrochemiluminescence at the water|oil interface

Interfacial effects are well-known to significantly alter chemical reactivity, especially in confined environments, where the surface to volume ratio increases. Here, we observed an inhomogeneity in the electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) intensity decrease over time in a multiphasic system composed of femtoliter water droplets entrapping femtoliter volumes of the 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) continuous phase. In usual electrochemiluminescence (ECL) reactions involving an ECL chromophore and oxalate ([C2O4]2-), the build-up of CO2 diminishes the ECL signal with time because of bubble formation. We hypothesised that relative solubilities of chemical species in these environments play a dramatic role in interfacial reactivity. Water droplets, loaded with the ECL luminophore [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and the coreactant [C2O4]2- were allowed to stochastically collide and adsorb at the surface of a glassy carbon macroelectrode. When water droplets coalesce on the surface, they leave behind femtoliter droplets of the DCE phase (inclusions). We report the surprising finding that the addition of multiple interfaces, due to the presence of continuous phase's femtoliter inclusions, allows sustained ECL over time after successive potential applications at the triple-phase boundary between water droplet|electrode|DCE inclusion. When femtoliter droplets of DCE form on the electrode surface, bright rings of ECL are observed during the simultaneous oxidation of [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and [C2O4]2-. Control experiments and finite element modelling allowed us to propose that these rings arise because CO2 that is generated near the 1,2-dichloroethane droplet partitions in due to relative solubility of CO2 in 1,2-dichloroethane and builds up and/or is expelled at the top of the droplet. The small droplets of the DCE phase act as micropumps, pumping away carbon dioxide from the interface. These results highlight the unexpected point that confined microenvironments and their geometry can tune chemical reactions of industrial importance and fundamental interest.

Through-Space Electrochemiluminescence Reveals Bubble Forces at Remote Phase Boundaries

Several groups have reported on the curious chemistry and reaction acceleration in confined volumes. These complex multiphase systems most closely resemble natural processes, and new measurement tools are necessary to probe chemistry in such environments. Generally, electrochemiluminescence (ECL) reports on processes immediately near (within a few micrometers) the electrode surface. Here, we introduce through-space ECL, reporting on dynamics of processes far away (100s of μm) from the electrode surface. We achieved this by collecting reflected ECL light. During the heterogeneous oxidation of C2O42- in an aqueous phase adjacent to a 1,2-dichlorethane droplet, CO2 accumulates in the 1,2-dichloroethane droplet. Upon buildup, we demonstrate that a CO2 bubble forms in the nonaqueous phase and is surprisingly trapped at the water|1,2-dichloroethane interface and continues to grow. The co-oxidation of tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) in the aqueous phase lights up the electrode surface and reflects off the edges of the bubble, revealing the bubble growth over time even when the bubble is fractions of a millimeter from the surface. We extend our results to quantifying bubble forces at the water-oil interface at remote distances from the electrode surface.

Manipulating Trapped Nanobubbles Moving and Coalescing with Surface Nanobubbles

Trapped nanobubbles are observed nucleating at nanopits on a pitted substrate, while surface nanobubbles are usually formed on the smooth solid surface in water. In this work, trapped nanobubbles and surface nanobubbles were captured by a tapping-mode atomic force microscope (AFM) on a nanopitted substrate based on the temperature difference method. A single trapped nanobubble was manipulated to change into a surface nanobubble, then to change into the trapped nanobubble again. At the same time, surface nanobubbles can be moved to merge into a trapped nanobubble. Our results show that the scan load and the size of the scan area were the main factors that significantly affect the mobility of surface/trapped nanobubbles. The coalescence and mutual transformation of the two kinds of nanobubbles indicate that trapped nanobubbles and surface nanobubbles have the same chemical nature, which also provides vital experimental proof of the existence of nanobubbles in the course of contact line depinning. Our results are of great significance for understanding nanobubble stability and providing guidelines in some industrial applications.

Growth of a bubble cloud in CO2-saturated water under microgravity

The diffusion-driven growth of a dense cloud of bubbles immersed in a gas-supersaturated liquid is a problem that finds applications in several modern technologies such as solvent-exchange micro-reactors, nanotechnology or the manufacturing of foamy materials. However, under Earth's gravity conditions, these dynamics can only be observed for a very limited time if the cloud is not attached to a surface, due to the action of buoyancy, i.e. of gravity effects. Here, we present experimental observations of the time evolution of dense bubble clouds growing in CO₂-supersaturated water under microgravity conditions. We report the existence of three regimes where the bubble cloud exhibits different growth rates. At short times, each bubble grows independently following the Epstein-Plesset equation. Later on, bubbles start to interact with each other and their growth rate diminishes as they compete for the available CO₂. When this happens, the growth rate slows down. This occurs earlier the deeper the bubble is in the cloud. Finally, at long times, only those bubbles on the husk continue growing. These regimes may be qualitatively described by a mathematical model where each individual bubble grows in the presence of a constellation of point mass sinks. Despite the model being only valid for dilute bubble clouds, its predictions are consistent with the experimental observations, even though the bubble clouds we observe are rather dense.

Surface Nanodroplets: Formation, Dissolution, and Applications

Droplets at solid-liquid interfaces play essential roles in a broad range of fields, such as compartmentalized chemical reactions and conversions, high-throughput analysis and sensing, and super-resolution near-field imaging. Our recent work has focused on understanding and controlling the nanodroplet formation on solid surfaces in ternary liquid mixtures. These surface nanodroplets resemble tiny liquid lenses with a typical height of <1 μm and a volume of subfemtoliters. The solvent exchange is based on the process of displacing a droplet liquid solution by a poor solvent to create a transient oversaturation for droplet formation. A quantitative understanding of growth dynamics of surface nanodroplets in ternary liquid mixtures not only provides insight into the liquid-liquid phase separation induced by solvent addition in general but also has made it possible to control the droplet size well. This review article will summarize our findings in the last ∼5 years from the research with our collaborators. The first part will explain the fundamental aspects that are key to the formation and stability of surface nanodroplets. In the second part, we will highlight the applications of nanodroplets in chemical analysis and functional surface fabrication and finally point out future directions in droplet-based applications.

Study on the Formation and Properties of Trapped Nanobubbles and Surface Nanobubbles by Spontaneous and Temperature Difference Methods

Trapped nanobubbles are gas domains trapped at nanopits on the solid-liquid interface. This is different from surface nanobubbles that usually form at the smooth surface. Herein, both trapped nanobubbles and surface nanobubbles formed on the nanopitted polystyrene film were studied by a spontaneous formation method and a temperature difference method. Trapped nanobubbles behave more flexibly than surface nanobubbles under different scanning loads. The nanopits under trapped nanobubbles appear after being subjected to large force scanning, and both trapped nanobubbles and surface nanobubbles can recover after reducing the scan load. The contact angles of the two kinds of nanobubbles were calculated and were found to be approximately constant. Configurations of trapped nanobubbles including under the pit mouth, protruding out but pinning at the pit mouth, and protruding out and extending around the pit mouth were experimentally observed. Gas oversaturation in the liquid after replacing the low-temperature water with high-temperature water was evaluated and was found to be a key factor for nanobubble formation and led to trapped nanobubbles protruding out and extending. Our study should be helpful in understanding the formation mechanism and properties of trapped nanobubbles and surface nanobubbles, and it will also be useful for further research on the control of nanobubble distribution.

Size dependence of bubble wetting on surfaces: breakdown of contact angle match between small sized bubbles and droplets

For a bubble on a smooth and rigid substrate, its contact angle is always assumed to be supplementary to the droplet contact angle under the same wetting conditions. Here we revisit bubble wetting on smooth solid surfaces via both free energetic analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Our study shows a fundamental difference between bubble wetting and droplet wetting: the size dependence of the isothermal compressibility of the gas bubble leads to a size-dependent bubble contact angle. Based on theoretical analysis we develop a new relationship between the bubble contact angle and droplet contact angle, which is verified with MD simulations for nano-sized bubbles and droplets. In general, our studies show that for bubbles having a size greater than 10 micrometers, the traditional relation of the bubble contact angle being supplementary to the droplet contact angle holds. But when the bubble size decreases to several micrometers or even to the nanoscale size, the relation of contact angle match breaks down, and the deviation from contact angle match increases with decreasing bubble size. This study reveals a unique wetting behavior of bubbles, implying that the wetting of micro- and nano-bubbles deserves serious consideration.
