Highly stable hole-conductor-free perovskite solar cells based upon ammonium chloride and a carbon electrode

Recent advances in carbon-based materials for high-performance perovskite solar cells: gaps, challenges and fulfillment

Presently, carbon-based nanomaterials have shown tremendous potential for energy conversion applications. Especially, carbon-based materials have emerged as excellent candidates for the fabrication of halide perovskite-based solar cells, which may lead to their commercialization. In the last decade, PSCs have rapidly developed, and these hybrid devices demonstrate a comparable performance to silicon-based solar cells in terms of power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, PSCs lag behind silicon-based solar cells due to their poor stability and durability. Generally, noble metals such gold and silver are employed as back electrode materials during the fabrication of PSCs. However, the use of these expensive rare metals is associated with some issues, urgently necessitating the search for cost-effective materials, which can realize the commercial applications of PSCs due to their interesting properties. Thus, the present review shows how carbon-based materials can become the main candidates for the development of highly efficient and stable PSCs. Carbon-based materials such as carbon black, graphite, graphene nanosheets (2D/3D), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon dots, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and carbon nanosheets show potential for the laboratory and large-scale fabrication of solar cells and modules. Carbon-based PSCs can achieve efficient and long-term stability for both rigid and flexible substrates because of their high conductivity and excellent hydrophobicity, thus showing good results in comparison to metal electrode-based PSCs. Thus, the present review also demonstrates and discusses the latest state-of-the-art and recent advances for carbon-based PSCs. Furthermore, we present perspectives on the cost-effective synthesis of carbon-based materials for the broader view of the future sustainability of carbon-based PSCs.

Carbon Electrodes in Perovskite Photovoltaics

High-performance lab-scale perovskite solar cells often have a precious metal as the top electrode. However, there are drawbacks to using metal top electrodes on a large scale, such as inducing degradation processes, requiring a high-temperature deposition process under vacuum, and having low scalability. Recently many studies have shown the potentials of using a carbon electrode because of its conductivity, flexibility, low cost, and ease of fabrication. This review article presents an overview of using carbon materials to replace the top electrode in perovskite photovoltaics. We discuss various fabrication techniques, various carbon-based device structures, and the advantages of using carbon materials. A collection of research works on device performance, large-scale fabrication, and device stability is presented. As a result, this review offers insight into the future of large-scale flexible solar cells.

Chlorides, other Halides, and Pseudo-Halides as Additives for the Fabrication of Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are attracting a tremendous attention from the scientific community due to their excellent power conversion efficiency, low cost, and great promise for the future of solar energy. The best PSCs have already achieved a certified power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.5 % after an unprecedented rapid performance rise. However, high requirements with respect to large area, high-efficiency devices, and stability are still the challenges. Major efforts, especially for achieving a high degree of chemical control, have been made to reach these targets. The use of halide additives has played a critical role in improving the efficiency and stability. The present paper reviews the important breakthroughs in PSC technologies made by using halide additives, especially chloride, and pseudo-halide additives for the preparation of the perovskite layers, other layers, and interfaces of the devices. These additives help perovskite (PVK) crystallization and layer morphology control, grain boundary reduction, bulk and interface defects passivation, and so on. Normally, these halide additives play different roles depending on their categories and their location. Herein, recent progresses made due to additives employment in every possible layer of PSCs are reviewed, with focus on chloride, other halides, and pseudo-halides as additives in PVK films, halide additives in carrier transport layers, and at PVK-contact interfaces. Finally, an outlook of engineering of these additives in PSC progress is given.

Recent developments in carbon nanotubes-based perovskite solar cells with boosted efficiency and stability

Perovskite solar cells (PSC) comprising of organic–inorganic lead halide composition have been considered as the future candidates for substituting the costly crystalline silicon-based solar cells if the challenges of efficiency and stability are adequately addressed. PSCs have been known for the employment of costly materials serving as electron transport, hole transport layers and back contact electrode such as gold, silver, or aluminum, needing thermal deposition in high vacuum ambiance. Metallic electrodes have been observed as not robust and thus, prone to quick degradation hindering the overall photovoltaic functionality of PSC devices. Carbon-modified PSCs via utilization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been a favorable choice in terms of longer stability and efficiency. Considering the overpowering potential of CNTs in transforming PSC device functionality, current review has been designed to elucidate the most recent progressions carried out in utilization of CNTs in PSCs. Furthermore, this review focussed a critical view on the utilization of CNTs-based PSCs for lower fill factors and other photovoltaic parameters in addition to the account of ways to solve these concerns. Photovoltaic community researchers need to develop cost effective methods for resolving the lower efficiencies and fill factors associated with use of CNTs and can further explore different novel materials to successfully modify CNTs for employment in PSCs.
