Non-covalent functionalization of triazine framework decorated over reduced graphene oxide as a novel anode catalyst support for glycerol oxidation

Enhancing the performance of Ni nanoparticle modified carbon felt towards glycerol electrooxidation: impact of organic additive

Organic additives are widely used in the deposition baths of metals and alloys thanks to their special function which affects the growth and the building of the crystal. This study investigates the effect of glycerol on Ni deposition onto carbon felt (CF) and its effect on the catalytic activity towards glycerol electrooxidation. The impact of glycerol on the morphology, distribution, and particle size of the electrodeposited Ni is disclosed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques were used to probe the possible changes of the electrodeposited Ni oxide phases. Electrochemical measurements show that the as-synthesized Ni_0.05@CF electrocatalyst prepared in the presence of 50 mM glycerol has a marked activity towards glycerol electrooxidation, as confirmed by the impressive increase of the oxidation current by about 1.6 times concurrently with a favorable negative shift of its onset potential. Moreover, the charge transfer resistance (R _ct) is much reduced from 140 to 87 ohm. The addition of glycerol to the deposition bath is believed to retard the growth of the formed Ni deposits while enhancing the nucleation rate and thus increases the particle density and, consequently, the distribution of deposited Ni over the entire CF is improved along with increasing the surface concentration and surface-active sites. This assumption is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Functional Nanomaterials in Biomedicine: Current Uses and Potential Applications

Nanomaterials, that is, materials made up of individual units between 1 and 100 nanometers, have lately involved a lot of attention since they offer a lot of potential in many fields, including pharmacy and biomedicine, owed to their exceptional physicochemical properties arising from their high surface area and nanoscale size. Smart engineering of nanostructures through appropriate surface or bulk functionalization endows them with multifunctional capabilities, opening up new possibilities in the biomedical field such as biosensing, drug delivery, imaging, medical implants, cancer treatment and tissue engineering. This article highlights up-to-date research in nanomaterials functionalization for biomedical applications. A summary of the different types of nanomaterials and the surface functionalization strategies is provided. Besides, the use of nanomaterials in diagnostic imaging, drug/gene delivery, regenerative medicine, cancer treatment and medical implants is reviewed. Finally, conclusions and future perspectives are provided.

Glycerol Is Converted into Energy and Carbonyl Compounds in a 3D-Printed Microfluidic Fuel Cell: In Situ and In Operando Bi-Modified Pt Anodes

The combination of energy and chemical conversion can be achieved by designing glycerol fuel cells. However, the anode must promote the reaction at onset potentials low enough to allow a spontaneous reaction, when coupled to the cathodic reaction, and must be selective. Here, we build a three-dimensional (3D)-printed glycerol microfluidic fuel cell that produces power concomitantly to glycolate and formate at zero bias. The balance between energy and the two carbonyl compounds is tuned by decorating the Pt/C/CP anode in situ (before feeding the cell reactants) or in operando (while feeding the cell with reactants) with Bi. The Bi-modified anodes improve glycerol conversion and output power while decreasing the formation of the carbonyl compounds. The in operando method builds dendrites of rodlike Bi oxides that are inactive for the anodic reaction and cover active sites. The in situ strategy promotes homogeneous Bi decoration, decreasing activation losses, increasing the open-circuit voltage to 1.0 V, and augmenting maximum power density 6.5 times and the glycerol conversion to 72% at 25 °C while producing 0.2 mmoL L^-1 of glycolate and formate (each) at 100 μL min^-1. Such a performance is attributed to the low CO poisoning of the anode, which leads the glycerol electrooxidation toward a more complete reaction, harvesting more electrons at the device. Printing the microfluidic fuel cell takes 23 min and costs ∼US$1.85 and can be used for other coupled reactions since the methods of modification presented here are applied to any existing and assembled systems.
