Base-free catalytic aerobic oxidation of mercaptans over MOF-derived Co/CN catalyst with controllable composition and structure

Unveiling the potential of Cu-Pd/CdS catalysts to supply and rectify electron transfer for H2 generation from water splitting

As a future fuel, obtaining hydrogen from water could be a game changer for the renewable energy sector, because it has the potential to be used as an alternative to fossil fuels. The current project has been designed to develop catalysts that can produce hydrogen from water on irradiation by sunlight. For this purpose, CdS, Cu/CdS, Pd/CdS, and Cu-Pd/CdS catalysts were successfully synthesised and utilized for hydrogen generation. The catalytic activity of pristine CdS has potentially been enhanced with Cu and Pd cocatalysts that were deposited via a chemical reduction strategy. The morphology and optical characteristics were assessed via XRD, Raman, UV-Vis/DRS, PL, SEM, HRTEM and AFM techniques. The phase purity, composition and charge transfer were confirmed by EDX, XPS and EIS studies. Under similar conditions, photoreactions and H2 evolution experiments were performed in a quartz reactor (UK/Velp-Sci) and GC-TCD (Shimadzu, 2014), respectively. Overall, a Cu-Pd/CdS catalyst (0.2% Cu and 0.8% Pd) was found to be the most active, potentially delivering 33.71 mmol g-1 h-1 of hydrogen. Higher efficiencies were attributed to the existence of Cu and Pd on CdS surfaces. It has been predicted that Cu cocatalysts increase the electron densities on CdS surfaces (i.e. active sites), while Pd cocatalysts reduce the back reactions (higher charge transportation) by forming Schottky junctions. Various factors like pH, temperature, intensity of light and catalyst dose are evaluated and discussed. Based on the results and activities, it has been concluded that the described approach shows potential to replace fossil fuels.

Unveiling the scope and perspectives of MOF-derived materials for cutting-edge applications

Although synthesis and design of MOFs are crucial factors to the successful implementation of targeted applications, there is still lack of knowledge among researchers about the synthesis of MOFs and their derived composites for practical applications. For example, many researchers manipulate study results, and it has become quite difficult to quit this habit specifically among the young researchers Undoubtedly, MOFs have become an excellent class of compounds but there are many challenges associated with their improvement to attain diverse applications. It has been noted that MOF-derived materials have gained considerable interest owing to their unique chemical properties. These compounds have exhibited excellent potential in various sectors such as energy, catalysis, sensing and environmental applications. It is worth mentioning that most of the researchers rely on commercially available MOFs for use as precursor supports, but it is an unethical and wrong practice because it prevents the exploration of the hidden diversity of similar materials. The reported studies have significant gaps and flaws, they do not have enough details about the exact parameters used for the synthesis of MOFs and their derived materials. For example, many young researchers claim that MOF-based materials cannot be synthesized as per the reported instructions for large-scale implementation. In this regard, current article provides a comprehensive review of the most recent advancements in the design of MOF-derived materials. The methodologies and applications have been evaluated together with their advantages and drawbacks. Additionally, this review suggests important precautions and solutions to overcome the drawbacks associated with their preparation. Applications of MOF-derived materials in the fields of energy, catalysis, sensing and environment have been discussed. No doubt, these materials have become excellent class but there are still many challenges ahead to specify it for the targeted applications.

MOF-Derived ZrO2-Supported Bimetallic Pd-Ni Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of 1,3-Butadiene

A series of MOF-derived ZrO2-supported Pd-Ni bimetallic catalysts (PdNi/UiO-67-CTAB(n)-A500) were prepared by co-impregnation and pyrolysis at 500 °C under air atmosphere using UiO-67-CTAB(n) (CTAB: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide; n: the concentration of CTAB; n = 0, 3, 8, 13, 18) as a sacrificial template. The catalytic activity of PdNi/UiO-66-CTAB(n)-A500 in 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation was found to be dependent on the crystal morphology of the UiO-67 template. The highest activity was observed over the PdNi/UiO-67-CTAB(3)-A500 catalyst which was synthesized using UiO-67-CTAB(3) with uniform octahedral morphology as the template for the 1,3-butadiene selective hydrogenation. The 1,3-butadiene conversion and total butene selectivity were 98.4% and 44.8% at 40 °C within 1 h for the PdNi/UiO-67-CTAB(3)-A500 catalyst, respectively. The catalyst of PdNi/UiO-67-CTAB(3)-A500 can be regenerated in flowing N2 at 200 °C. Carbon deposited on the surface of the catalyst was the main reason for its deactivation. This work is valuable for the high-efficiency bimetallic catalyst's development on the selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene.

Solvent-controlled synthesis of Ti-based porphyrinic metal–organic frameworks for the selective photocatalytic oxidation of amines

The photocatalytic activity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be managed by the milieu of synthesis. Herein, N,N'-dimethylacetamide (DMA) and N,N'-diethylformamide (DEF) were employed as solvents for the synthesis of two Ti-based porphyrinic MOFs, namely Ti-PMOF-DMA and Ti-PMOF-DEF, from tetrabutyl orthotitanate and 4,4',4'',4'''-(porphine-5,10,15,20-tetrayl)tetrakis(benzoic acid). Notably, both DMA and DEF were adsorbed onto the Ti-oxo clusters of the two MOFs to shape their properties. Ti-PMOF-DMA was observed with better optoelectronic response and charge transfer than Ti-PMOF-DEF. Moreover, Ti-PMOF-DMA owned a larger pore volume than Ti-PMOF-DEF, imparting more accessible sites to benzyl amines. Ti-PMOF-DMA exhibited better activity in selective photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of benzylamine than Ti-PMOF-DEF. Irradiated by red light-emitting diodes, outstanding results for selective conversion of  benzyl amines to imines over Ti-PMOF-DMA were attained. Superoxide radical anion, generated by the electron transfer from porphyrin via Ti-oxo clusters to dioxygen, turned out to be the primary reactive oxygen species. There was generality towards aerobic oxidation of amines to imines and considerable stability for Ti-PMOF-DMA. This work provides a new perspective on the altering MOFs to enhance photocatalytic organic transformations.

Combining Brønsted base and photocatalysis into conjugated microporous polymers: Visible light-induced oxidation of thiols into disulfides with oxygen

Numerous applications in visible light photocatalysis have been found over conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) whose function could be rationally designed at the molecular level. In this context, the oxidation of thiols into disulfides entails proton and electron transfer and thus requires both Brønsted base and photocatalysis, which could be both combined into CMPs. With carbazole as a Brønsted base and an electron donor, CMPs were constructed to implement the synergistic deprotonation and oxidation of thiols into disulfides in ethanol (C₂H₅OH). Gratifyingly, the bifunctional CMPs could activate molecular oxygen (O₂) to superoxide anion (O₂^•-) and promote the blue light-induced selective oxidation of thiols into symmetrical disulfides with high efficiency in C₂H₅OH. More remarkably, the highly selective formation of unsymmetrical disulfides could also be achieved without adding a Brønsted base. This work highlights the feasibility of combining cooperative photocatalysis into CMPs for versatile chemical transformations.
