Robust multifunctional superhydrophobic, photocatalytic and conductive fabrics with electro-/photo-thermal self-healing ability

Controllable hydrophilic/superhydrophobic patterned coatings for optical information encryption/decryption based on water-triggered opaque to translucent transition

Anti-counterfeiting technologies are crucial for securing the authenticity and proof of commodities, in which the optical information encryption/decryption has attracted extensive attention for its overriding advantages of visibility and convenience. Inspired by the unique transparency transformation phenomenon of Diphylleia grayi petals, a controllable hydrophilic/superhydrophobic patterned coating with water-triggered opaque to translucent transition is proposed through the construction of a superhydrophobic coating, subsequent air plasma etching under a mask, and final hydrophilic modification to introduce stable invisible patterns. The superhydrophobic region exhibits great water repellency with a water contact angle (WCA) at 157°, while the hydrophilic region quickly absorbs water with a WCA at 61°. The patterned coating presents an opaque state for the serious light scattering induced by the rough microstructure and large refractive index difference between the coating and air, while the hydrophilic patterns on the coating transform to translucent after water infiltration for the reduced roughness and close refractive indexes of the coating and water. The information revealing is rapid and reversible, and demonstrates heat and long-term stability and great reusability. The findings conceivably stand out as a new methodology to fabricate controllable superwettable coatings with optical information encryption/decryption capability for application in anti-counterfeiting.

Photothermal Superhydrophobic Cotton Fabric Based on Silver Nanoparticles Cross-Linked by Polydopamine and Polyethylenimide

Photothermal materials that can convert solar energy into heat energy through photothermal conversion have attracted extensive attention, but these materials are easily polluted by the environment. Here, we propose a simple and effective strategy for constructing photothermal superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with self-cleaning ability. The PDA@PEI@GA@Ag@PDMS-coated cotton fabric can achieve good superhydrophobicity (water contact angle: 159.6°) by a simple dipping method and mussel-inspired dopamine surface modification, which is regulated by the mass of dopamine, the mass of silver nitrate, and the concentration of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The coated cotton fabric has good physical and chemical stability. Meanwhile, the coated cotton fabric has excellent self-cleaning and antifouling properties. The superhydrophobic PDA@PEI@GA@Ag@PDMS fabric exhibits excellent and stable photothermal properties, with the surface temperature reaching 70.4 °C under simulated sunlight with a current of 20 A. This photothermal superhydrophobic fabric with self-cleaning properties is expected to be applied in the field of photothermal conversion.

Self-healing system of superhydrophobic surfaces inspired from and beyond nature

Superhydrophobic surfaces show wide prospects in a variety of applications requiring self-cleaning, anti-fog, anti-ice, anti-corrosion and anti-fouling properties, which have attracted the attention of many researchers. However, superhydrophobic surfaces are inevitably affected by chemical corrosion, scratches and wear in practical applications, resulting in the loss of superhydrophobicity. To solve this problem, researchers have developed superhydrophobic surfaces with self-healing properties. In this paper, the research achievements of self-healing superhydrophobic materials in recent years are summarized, and the preparation and repair principle of self-healing superhydrophobic surfaces are introduced from three aspects: surface chemical composition repair, surface roughness repair and double repair. In addition, some multifunctional self-healing superhydrophobic surfaces are introduced, such as conductive, stretchable, antibacterial, etc. Finally, in order to provide a reference for the preparation of widely used long-acting superhydrophobic materials, some existing problems and future development prospects are described in order to attract more researchers' attention and promote the development of this field.

On the Development of Ultradurable Extremely Water-Repellent and Oleophobic Soot-Based Fabrics with Direct Relevance to Sperm Cryopreservation

Nowadays, the tremendous progress of nanotechnologies and materials science facilitates the fabrication of universal and multifunctional superhydrophobic surfaces on a large scale. Yet, integrating icephobic and anti-bioadhesive properties in an individual water-repellent functional coating, for addressing the difficulties faced by cryobiologists, aircraft, and seacraft manufacturers, is quite tricky but feasible if using nonpolar soot nanoparticles, whose fragility, however, impedes their industrial applicability. Here, we advance the current state-of-the-art to an extent, permitting the introduction of economically affordable and ultradurable non-wettable soot-based coatings. The deposition of rapeseed oil soot, cyanoacrylate glue and fluorine compounds onto different fabrics confers the latter with superior tolerance to harsh mechanical and thermal interventions [e.g., scratching, blade scraping, liquid nitrogen immersion (T ∼ -196 °C), torsion and water jetting], while in the meantime retaining water repellency and oleophobicity. The as-prepared soot fabrics can stick continuously to the selected host surface and favor the recovery of ∼60% of the initial motility of human spermatozoa subjected to cryopreservation or being detached and utilized as standalone non-wettable membranes. Our invention may be considered as the first fundamental stage of safely (without any health concerns) transferring the soot in reproductive medicine and developing enhanced cryogenic and antibacterial medical devices.
