Abstract
Hematite (Fe2O3) has been accepted as a promising and potential photo(electro)catalyst. However, its poor carrier separation and transfer efficiency has limited its application for photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water oxidation. Herein, a S-doped FeOOH (S:FeOOH) layer was rationally designed and grown on Fe2O3 to construct a S:FeOOH/Fe2O3 composite photoanode. The obtained S:FeOOH/Fe2O3 photoanodes were fully characterized. The surface injection efficiency for Fe2O3 was then significantly increased with a high ηsurface value of 92.8%, which increases to 2.98 times for Fe2O3 and 2.16 times for FeOOH/Fe2O3, respectively. With 2.43 mA cm‒2 at 1.23 V, the optimized S:FeOOH/Fe2O3 photoanode was entrusted with a higher photocurrent density. The onset potential for S:FeOOH/Fe2O3 cathodically shifts 70 mV over Fe2O3. The improved PEC performance suggests that the S:FeOOH layer acts as ultrafast transport channels for holes at the photoanode/electrolyte interface, suppressing surface charge recombination. A Z-scheme band alignment between Fe2O3 and S:FeOOH was deduced from the UV-Vis and UPS spectra to promote charge transfer. This method provides an alternative for the construction of photoanodes with enhanced PEC water splitting performance.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as promising electrocatalysts have been widely studied, but their performance is limited by conductivity and coordinating saturation. This study proposes a cationic (V) modification strategy and evaluates its effect on the electrocatalytic performance of CoFe-MOF nanosheet arrays. The optimal V-CoFe-MOF/NF electrocatalyst exhibits excellent oxygen-evolution reaction (OER)/hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) performance (231 mV at 100 mA cm-2/86 mV at 10 mA cm-2) in alkaline conditions, with its OER durability exceeding 400 h without evident degradation. Furthermore, as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting, a small cell voltage is achieved (1.60 V at 10 mA cm-2). The practicability of the catalyst is further evaluated by membrane electrode assembly (MEA), showing outstanding activity (1.53 V at 10 mA cm-2) and long-term stability (at 300 mA cm-2). Moreover, our results reveal the apparent reconstruction properties of V-CoFe-MOF/NF in alkaline electrolytes, where the partially dissolved V promotes the formation of more active β-MOOH. The mechanism study shows the OER mechanism shifts to a lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) after V doping, which directly avoids complex multistep adsorption mechanism and reduces reaction energy. This study provides a cation mediated strategy for designing efficient electrocatalysts.

Balancing charge recombination and hole transfer rates in hematite photoanodes by modulating the Co 2+/Fe 3+ sites in the OER cocatalyst. J Colloid Interface Sci 2024; 654:915-924. Abstract
This work investigates the roles of Co and Fe sites in a composite cocatalyst on the performance of hematite photoanodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The cobalt/iron-based composite (Co-Fe-O) cocatalyst, consisting of adjustable Co2+/Fe3+ratios, was synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method. It reveals that Co2+ sites with a robust capacity for low-bias hole capture, which is insignificantly affected by partial substitution by Fe3+, decelerate the charge recombination process. However, it also leads to a slower charge transfer, with slower oxygen-evolution kinetics on Co sites than on Fe sites. Consequently, the modulation of the Co2+/Fe3+ ratio facilitates the redistribution of surface strap states, striking a delicate balance between charge recombination and charge transfer rates. This optimization led to the highest low-bias photocurrent density of 1.6 mA cm-2 at 1.0 V vs. RHE (a 2.4-fold increase) for the cocatalyst with a Co2+/Fe3+ ratio of 1:2 (CoFe2O4 nanoparticles). Additionally, the cocatalyst with a Co2+/Fe3+ ratio of 1:4 (mixture of CoFe2O4 and Fe2O3 nanoparticles, demonstrated an impressive high-bias photocurrent density of 3.8 mA cm-2 at 1.6 V vs. RHE (a 2.3-fold increase). This study emphasizes the promising potential of modulating active sites within a cocatalyst to achieve efficient PEC water splitting on a hematite-based photoanode.

Abstract
Effectively regulating and promoting the charge separation and transfer of photoanodes is a key and challenging aspect of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. Herein, a Ti-doped hematite photoanode with a CoFe-LDH cocatalyst loaded on the surface was prepared through a series of processes, including hydrothermal treatment, annealing and electrodeposition. The prepared CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3 photoanode exhibited an outstanding photocurrent density of 3.06 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE, which is five times higher than that of α-Fe2O3 alone. CoFe-LDH modification and Ti doping on hematite can boost the surface charge transfer efficiency, which is mainly attributed to the interface interaction between CoFe-LDH and Ti:α-Fe2O3. Furthermore, we investigated the role of Ti doping in enhancing the PEC performance of CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3. A series of characterizations and theoretical calculations revealed that, in addition to improving the electronic conductivity of the bulk material, Ti doping also further enhances the interface coupling of CoFe-LDH/α-Fe2O3 and finely regulates the interfacial electronic structure. These changes promote the rapid extraction of holes from hematite and facilitate charge separation and transfer. The informative findings presented in this work provide valuable insights for the design and construction of hematite photoanodes, offering guidance for achieving excellent performance in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation.

Abstract
The development of visible-light-responsive (VLR) semiconductor materials for effective water oxidation is significant for a sustainable and better future. Among various candidates, bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6; BWO) has attracted extensive attention because of many advantages, including efficient light-absorption ability, appropriate redox properties (for O2 generation), adjustable morphology, low cost, and profitable chemical and optical characteristics. Accordingly, a facile solvothermal method has been proposed in this study to synthesize two-dimensional (2D) BWO nanoplates after considering the optimal preparation conditions (solvothermal reaction time: 10-40 h). To find the key factors of photocatalytic performance, various methods and techniques were used for samples' characterization, including XRD, FE-SEM, STEM, TEM, HRTEM, BET-specific surface area measurements, UV/vis DRS, and PL spectroscopy, and photocatalytic activity was examined for water oxidation under UV and/or visible-light (vis) irradiation. Famous commercial photocatalyst-P25 was used as a reference sample. It was found that BWO crystals grew anisotropically along the {001} basal plane to form nanoplates, and all properties were controlled simultaneously by tuning the synthesis time. Interestingly, the most active sample (under both UV and vis), prepared during the 30 h solvothermal reaction at 433 K (BWO-30), was characterized by the smallest specific surface area and the largest crystals. Accordingly, it is proposed that improved crystallinity (which hindered charge carriers' recombination, as confirmed by PL), efficient photoabsorption (using the smallest bandgap), and 2D mesoporous structure are responsible for the best photocatalytic performance of the BWO-30 sample. This report shows for the first time that 2D mesoporous BWO nanoplates might be successfully prepared through a facile template-free solvothermal approach. All the above-mentioned advantages suggest that nanostructured BWO is a prospective candidate for photocatalytic applications under natural solar irradiation.

Abstract
Ti-ZnFe2O4 photoanode has attracted extensive attention in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation due to its narrow band gap and good photostability. However, its low efficiency limits its development. Herein, we designed and constructed direct Z-scheme Ti-ZnFe2O4/In2O3 (Ti-ZFO/In2O3) photoanode. Under the interface electric field, photogenerated holes with stronger oxidation capacity on In2O3 are retained to participate in the water oxidation reaction, and the photocurrent density of Ti-ZFO/In2O3 is much higher than that of pure Ti-ZFO, reaching 2.2 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE. Kelvin Probe, steady-state photovoltage spectroscopy (SPV), transient photovoltage spectroscopy (TPV) and in-situ double beam strategy were used to demonstrate the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism of Ti-ZFO/In2O3 photoanode. Our work provides an effective scheme and technical means for further understanding the mechanism of interfacial charge transfer.

Abstract
The development of electrocatalysts for N2 reduction reaction (NRR) is significant for scalable and renewable NH3 synthesis, but calls for a technology innovation to overcome the specific problems of low efficiency and poor selectivity. Herein, we prepare a core-shell nanostructure by coating polypyrrole (PPy) onto sulfur-doped iron oxide nanoparticles (denoted as S-Fe2O3@PPy) as the highly selective and durable electrocatalysts for NRR under ambient conditions. Sulfur doping and PPy coating remarkably improve the charge transfer efficiency of S-Fe2O3@PPy, and the interactions between PPy and Fe2O3 nanoparticles produce abundant oxygen vacancies as active sites for NRR. This catalyst achieves an NH3 production rate of 22.1 μg h-1 mgcat-1 and a very-high Faradic efficiency of 24.6%, surpassing other Fe2O3 based NRR catalysts. Density functional theory calculations show that the S-coordinated iron site can successfully activate the N2 molecule and optimize the energy barrier during the reduction process, resulting in a small theoretical limiting potential.

Abstract
Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has been considered as an alternative process to produce green hydrogen. However, the energy conversion efficiency of PEC systems was still limited by the inefficient photoanode. Cocatalysts decoration is regarded as an efficient strategy for improving PEC performance of photoanode. In this work, nanodot-like cobalt (oxy)hydroxides was rationally decorated on hematite to fabricate CoOOH/Fe2O3 photoanode. The resulted CoOOH/Fe2O3 exhibits a high photocurrent density of 1.92 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is 2.6 times than that of bare Fe2O3. In addition, the onset potential displays a cathodic shift of ca. 110 mV, indicating that CoOOH can efficiently accelerate water oxidation kinetics over Fe2O3. The comprehensive PEC and electrochemical characterizations reveal that CoOOH could not only provide abundant accessible Co active sites for water oxidation, but also could passivate the surface states of Fe2O3, thus increase the carrier density and decrease the interfacial resistance. As a result, the PEC water oxidation performance over Fe2O3 was significantly boosted. This work supports that the roles of CoOOH cocatalyst is generic and such CoOOH could be used for other semiconductor-based photoanodes for outstanding PEC water splitting performance.
