Synergistic dual electrolyte additives for fluoride rich solid-electrolyte interface on Li metal anode surface: Mechanistic understanding of electrolyte decomposition

The influence of P-toluenesulfonyl isocyanate on the solvation structure and solid electrolyte interphase formation on graphite anode under high temperatures

The formation and stability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) play a crucial role in determining the performance and lifespan of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) at evaluated temperatures. Electrolyte additives have emerged as promising candidates for modulating the formation kinetics and stability of the SEI layer. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were employed to investigate the influences of P-toluenesulfonyl isocyanate (PTSI) as an electrolyte additive in the LiPF6/EC/DMC electrolyte on the SEI formation process on the graphite anode under high temperatures. MD simulations revealed that PTSI induces modifications in the solvation structure, resulting in two ethylene carbonate (EC) and two dimethyl carbonate (DMC) molecules in the first solvation shell of Li+. Furthermore, the PTSI additive suppressed the decomposition of solvent molecules and PF6 anions in the LiPF6/EC/DMC/PTSI electrolyte under high temperatures according to the AIMD simulations, contributing to a more stable SEI layer. Moreover, this suppression can be attributed to the reduced reactivity of solvent molecules and salt anions, as evidenced by the enhanced bond strength and decreased bond length. These microscopic insights provide a multi-faceted understanding of the functionality of PTSI additives, facilitating the rational design of novel additives.

In situ construction of robust artificial solid-electrolyte interphase layer on lithium-metal anode by a facile one-step solution route

Development of high energy density lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) is markedly hindered by the interfacial instability on lithium-metal anode side. Solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a fundamental factor to regulate dendrite growth and enhance the stability of lithium-metal anodes. Here, trithiocyanuric acid, a triazine derivative with sulfhydryl groups, is used as an efficient promoter to favor the construction of a robust artificial SEI layer on the lithium metal surface, which greatly benefits the stability and efficiency of LMBs. With the assistance of trithiocyanuric acid facilely introduced on the Li surface via a one-step solution route, a highly uniform artificial SEI layer rich in Li2S and Li3N is formed, which efficiently facilitates uniform lithium deposition and suppresses lithium dendrite growth. Remarkably, the Li|Li cell displays stable lithium plating/stripping cycling over 800 h at 0.5 mA cm-2, 1 mAh cm-2, and the Li|LFP cells exhibit prolonged lifespan over 700 cycles at 3 C and superior rate performance from 2 to 20 C. This work provides a facile design strategy for constructing a superb artificial SEI layer for high-performance LMBs.

Molecular Engineering toward Robust Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Lithium Metal Batteries

Lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) with high energy density are becoming increasingly important in global sustainability initiatives. However, uncontrollable dendrite seeds, inscrutable interfacial chemistry, and repetitively formed solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) have severely hindered the advancement of LMBs. Organic molecules have been ingeniously engineered to construct targeted SEI and effectively minimize the above issues. In this review, multiple organic molecules, including polymer, fluorinated molecules, and organosulfur, are comprehensively summarized and insights into how to construct the corresponding elastic, fluorine-rich, and organosulfur-containing SEIs are provided. A variety of meticulously selected cases are analyzed in depth to support the arguments of molecular design in SEI. Specifically, the evolution of organic molecules-derived SEI is discussed and corresponding design principles are proposed, which are beneficial in guiding researchers to understand and architect SEI based on organic molecules. This review provides a design guideline for constructing organic molecule-derived SEI and will inspire more researchers to concentrate on the exploitation of LMBs.
