The Personal Narratives of Croatian-Speaking Children With Developmental Language Disorder: Investigating the Influence of Emotional Valence at Linguistic, Propositional, and Macrostructure Levels

PURPOSE

Although it is known that children with developmental language disorder (DLD) have difficulty composing personal narratives, previous studies have not employed a wide range of measures that reflect functioning at the different levels of discourse processing, as proposed in the Linguistic Underpinnings of Narrative in Aphasia (LUNA) framework. Because children evoke pleasant or unpleasant events through personal narratives, this study examines whether the emotional valence of the event influences the narrative production of Croatian-speaking children with DLD and those with typical language development (TLD) at the linguistic, propositional, and macrostructure levels.

METHOD

Fifty 10-year-old Croatian-speaking children with DLD and 50 gender-matched peers with TLD told personal narratives elicited through emotion-based prompts using the Global TALES protocol. Emotional valence was analyzed by coding each narrative event as either pleasant (positive) or unpleasant (negative). The narratives were evaluated using measures from the linguistic (lexical diversity, grammatical complexity, and accuracy), propositional (mazes, incomplete utterances, local coherence) and macrostructure (global coherence) levels.

RESULTS

Our results show that children with DLD who speak Croatian have difficulty forming personal narratives at all three levels of discourse production, as evidenced by lower grammatical complexity and accuracy, more incomplete utterances, and lower local and global coherence. These difficulties are consistent in both positive and negative narratives. Results also showed that negative narratives are chronologically better ordered than positive narratives in both groups of children.

CONCLUSION

These findings provide further evidence that children with DLD have considerable difficulty producing linguistically well-organized, complete, and coherent personal narratives across different levels of the LUNA framework, regardless of the emotional valence of the events they recount.

Reminiscing and Autobiographical Memory in ASD: Mother-Child Conversations About Emotional Events and How Preschool-Aged Children Recall the Past

Autobiographical memory (AM) is a socially-relevant cognitive skill. Little is known regarding AM during early childhood in ASD. Parent-child reminiscing conversations predict AM in non-ASD populations but have rarely been examined in autism. To address this gap, 17 preschool-aged children (ages 4-6 years) with ASD and 21 children without ASD matched on age, sex, and expressive language completed assessments of AM, executive functioning, self-related variables, and a parent-child reminiscing task. Children with ASD had less specific AM, which related to theory of mind, self-concept, and working memory. AM specificity also related to child observed autism traits. Mothers of children with ASD made more closed-ended and off-topic utterances during reminiscing, although only maternal open-ended elaborations predicted better AM in ASD.

Parenting Behavior and Child Language: A Meta-analysis

CONTEXT

Early language development supports cognitive, academic, and behavioral success. Identifying modifiable predictors of child language may inform policies and practices aiming to promote language development.

OBJECTIVE

To synthesize results of observational studies examining parenting behavior and early childhood language in typically developing samples.

DATA SOURCES

Searches were conducted in Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Dissertation Abstracts (1967 to 2017).

STUDY SELECTION

Studies had 1 of 2 observational measures of parenting behavior (i.e., sensitive responsiveness or warmth) and a measure of child language.

DATA EXTRACTION

Data from 37 studies were extracted by independent coders. Estimates were examined by using random-effects meta-analysis.

RESULTS

Two meta-analyses were conducted, which examined (1) the association between sensitive-responsive parenting and child language (k = 36; r = 0.27; 95% confidence interval: 0.21 to 0.33); and (2) the association between parental warmth and child language (k = 13; r = 0.16; 95% confidence interval: 0.09 to 21). The pooled effect size for the association between sensitive responsiveness and child language was statistically higher than that of warmth and child language. The association between sensitive responsiveness and child language was moderated by family socioeconomic status (SES): effect sizes were stronger in low and diverse SES groups compared with middle to upper SES groups. Effect sizes were also stronger in longitudinal versus cross-sectional studies.

LIMITATIONS

Results are limited to typically developing samples and mother-child dyads. Findings cannot speak to causal processes.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings support theories describing how sensitive parenting may facilitate language and learning.

Listening to the voice of children with developmental speech and language disorders using narrative inquiry: Methodological considerations

There are policy and theoretical drivers for listening directly to children's perspectives. These perspectives can provide insights to children's experiences of their daily lives and ways in which they construct their multiple identities. Qualitative methodology is a useful research paradigm with regard to exploring children's experiences. However, listening to the perspectives of children with speech and language disorders is a relatively new field of research. Therefore, it is important that researchers share their experiences of using methods and reflect on the strengths and limitations of these methods. The authors have used narrative inquiry with children with speech and language disorders to explore ways in which these children make sense of their experiences and construct their identities. In this paper, the authors reflect on methodological considerations when using narrative inquiry with children with speech and language disorders. They critically discuss three methodological considerations: narrative inquiry as a methodological choice, methods for data generation, limitations, and rigour.

Well-Being and Resilience in Children With Speech and Language Disorders

PURPOSE

Children with speech and language disorders are at risk in relation to psychological and social well-being. The aim of this study was to understand the experiences of these children from their own perspectives focusing on risks to their well-being and protective indicators that may promote resilience.

METHOD

Eleven 9- to 12-year-old children (4 boys and 7 girls) were recruited using purposeful sampling. One participant presented with a speech sound disorder, 1 presented with both a speech and language disorder, and 9 with language disorders. All were receiving additional educational supports. Narrative inquiry, a qualitative design, was employed. Data were generated in home and school settings using multiple semi-structured interviews with each child over a 6-month period. A total of 59 interviews were conducted. The data were analyzed to identify themes in relation to potential risk factors to well-being and protective strategies.

RESULTS

Potential risk factors in relation to well-being were communication impairment and disability, difficulties with relationships, and concern about academic achievement. Potential protective strategies were hope, agency, and positive relationships.

CONCLUSION

This study highlights the importance of listening to children's narratives so that those at risk in relation to well-being can be identified. Conceptualization of well-being and resilience within an ecological framework may enable identification of protective strategies at both individual and environmental levels that can be strengthened to mitigate negative experiences.

The Construction of Self in Relationships: Narratives and References to Mental States during Picture-Book Reading Interactions between Mothers and Children

Previous studies showed that mothers vary in the way in which they discuss past experiences with their children, since they can exhibit narrative (elaborative) or paradigmatic (repetitive) styles to different extents. Given this background, the aim of the present study was to analyze differences in the mothers' use of narrative styles and mental state language (MSL), as a function of children's age and gender. Thirty dyads consisting of mothers and their 4- to 6-year-old children were observed during a picture-book reading interaction. Maternal utterances were coded according to the categories described by Tessler and Nelson (1994), classifying each mother as Narrative or Paradigmatic. Eight categories of MSL were analyzed: perceptual, emotional (positive and negative), volitional, cognitive, communicative, and moral. The results confirmed the existence of the two maternal styles observed in the earlier studies. Importantly, we found that the mothers of younger children were more narrative than paradigmatic, whereas the opposite pattern occurred for the mothers of older children (they were more paradigmatic than narrative). As concerns MSL, the results indicated that the use of communicative terms was significantly more frequent for narrative than for paradigmatic mothers, and decreased linearly with children's age. Lastly, the mothers of younger children referred their MSL more frequently to the book characters than to themselves or to the child. Taken together, these results support the idea that mothers adapt their narrative styles and MSL input to the growing abilities of their children, therefore contributing to the development of social understanding.
