Modification of texture and in vitro digestion of pectin and κ-carrageenan food hydrogels with antioxidant properties using plant cells

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the textural, rheological, and in vitro digestion properties of hydrogels based on pectins with different degree of methylesterification (DM) or κ-carrageenan, and duckweed callus cells, as well as to determine the antioxidant activity of these hydrogels. Encapsulation of cells in the hydrogels resulted in increased grape seed extract (GSE) encapsulation efficiency and porosity of the hydrogels. The incorporation of 40 % cells in pectin hydrogel with low DM (5.7 %) (TVC) resulted in decreased hardness. The incorporation of cells into the weaker pectin hydrogel (DM 33.0 %) (CP) resulted in decreased cohesiveness and springiness and increased hardness, gumminess, and chewiness proportional to the increase in cell concentration. Encapsulation of cells in κ-carrageenan hydrogel resulted in decreased textural characteristics and increased GSE release into saliva. Pectin hydrogels with weaker textural and rheological properties released GSE faster in the gastrointestinal environment compared to those with stronger properties. TVC and κ-carrageenan hydrogels had different mechanisms for GSE release. All samples exhibited the antioxidant activity. Encapsulation of cells resulted in increased radical scavenging activity of hydrogels, enhanced ability to inhibit Fe2+/ascorbate-initiated lipid peroxidation, and reduced AAPH-induced reactive oxygen species generation in erythrocytes.

Global research progress of nanomedicine and colorectal cancer: a bibliometrics and visualization analysis

Background

Surgery and chemoradiotherapy are the main clinical treatment methods for colorectal cancer (CRC), but the prognosis is poor. The emergence of nanomedicine brings bright light to the treatment of CRC. However, there has not been a comprehensive and systematic analysis of CRC and nanomedicine by bibliometrics.

Methods

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection database (WOSCC) for relevant literature published from 2011 to 2024. We used VOSviewer and Citespace to analyze countries, institutions, authors, keywords, highly cited references, and co-cited references.

Results

3105 pieces of literatures were included in the research analysis, and PEOPLES R CHINA and the USA took the leading position in the number of papers published and had academic influence. The Chinese Academy of Sciences posted the most papers. The most prolific scholar was Abnous Khalil. The level of economic development is inversely proportional to the number of cases and deaths of colorectal cancer. Nanoparticles (NPs), the nanomedical drug delivery system (NDDS) is a hot topic in the field. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), immunogenic cell death (ICD), tumor microenvironment (TEM), folic acid, and pH are the cutting edge of the field.

Conclusion

This paper introduces the research hotspot, emphasis, and frontier of CRC and nanomedicine, and points out the direction for this field.

Preparation, physicochemical characterization and swelling properties of composite hydrogel microparticles based on gelatin and pectins with different structure

Composite hydrogel microparticles based on pectins with different structures (callus culture pectin (SVC) and apple pectin (AU)) and gelatin were developed. Hydrogel microparticles were formed by the ionotropic gelation and electrostatic interaction of COO- groups of pectin and NH3+ groups of gelatin, which was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The addition of gelatin to pectin-based gel formulations resulted in a decrease in gel strength, whereas increasing gelatin concentration enhanced this effect. The microparticle gel strength increased in proportion to the increase in the pectin concentration. The DSC and TGA analyzes showed that pectin-gelatin gels had the higher thermal stability than individual pectins. The gel strength, Ca2+ content and thermal stability of the microparticles based on gelatin and SVC pectin with a lower degree of methylesterification (DM) (14.8 %) were higher compared to that of microparticles based on gelatin and AU pectin with a higher DM (40 %). An increase in the SVC concentration, Ca2+ content and gel strength of SVC-gelatin microparticles led to a decrease in the swelling degree in simulated gastrointestinal fluids. The addition of 0.5 % gelatin to gels based on AU pectin resulted in increased stability of the microparticles in gastrointestinal fluids, while the microparticles from AU without gelatin were destroyed.

Physicochemical Characterization of Star Anise Silver Nanoparticles Incorporated Chitosan Biomaterial for Absorb Water and Cure Wounds

Chronic wounds threaten the geriatric society worldwide irrespective of their social status. The current treatment approach to cure chronic ailments is associated with its demerits. A novel treatment approach that is coordinated is required to adsorb water from wounds and cure chronic wounds. Star anise condiment used in the Indian kitchen is shown to have the potency to cure various ailments. In this study, silver nanoparticles were prepared using the star anise extract. The biological potency of star anise extract was confirmed through Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy, antioxidant assay, and anti-inflammatory study. From the DPPH assay result, it was inferred that star anise extract was able to scavenge the free radicals at the concentration of 10 μg/ml using the aqueous extract silver nanoparticles were prepared. The prepared particles were characterized by UV-visible, scanning electron microscopy, and their biological efficacy was determined for their potency against bacteria and prevention of protein aggregation. The anti-inflammatory assay suggests that nanoparticles prevent the aggregation of proteins in a dose-dependent manner. IC50 was found to be 20 μg/ml. The synthesized nanoparticle was incorporated into the chitosan biomaterial and characterized by various physicochemical parameters such as differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, and thermogravimetric analysis. According to the findings, silver nanoparticles incorporated in chitosan biomaterials can be used to adsorb water from wounds and wound healing materials.
