Abstract
The associations between multiple sleep characteristics and smoking behavior are inconsistent, and it is unclear which sleep characteristics are most crucial for tobacco prevention. This study aimed to explore the associations between smoking status/intensity and multiple sleep characteristics and to identify the potential core domain of smoking-related sleep using network analysis. Data were obtained from a survey of cancer-related risk factors among Chinese adults. Logistic regression models were used to quantify the associations between sleep characteristics and smoking status/intensity. Network analyses were employed to identify the core sleep characteristics. A total of 5,228 participants with a median age of 44 years old were included in the study. Current smoking was significantly positively associated with long nap time, difficulty falling asleep, late bedtime, getting up after 7 am, and waking up earlier than expected. There was significant positive association between current smoking and short sleep duration in young adults under 45 years old. Late bedtime and getting up after 7 am were only associated with current heavy smoking, but not current light smoking. Network analyses showed that multiple smoking-related sleep characteristics were interconnected, with difficulty falling asleep and late bedtime as central characteristics in the network. The study found that the associations between sleep characteristics and smoking varied by age and smoking intensity and highlights the potential benefits of sleep health promotion in smoking cessation, with a particular focus on difficulty falling asleep and late bedtime.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Observational studies have found associations between smoking, alcohol, radiation, body mass index (BMI), periodontitis, and the hazard of benign salivary gland neoplasms (BSGNs). Nevertheless, the etiology of BSGNs remains unclear. This study aims to assess the causal association between these modifiable factors and the BSGNs. METHODS Genetic instruments associated with exposures at the genome-wide significance level were selected from corresponding genome-wide association studies. The summary statistics for BSGNs were obtained from the FinnGen consortium (2445 cases and 340,054 controls). The inverse variance-weighted method was used as the primary analysis, and several sensitivity analyses were performed to test the reliability. RESULTS Genetically predicted higher lifetime smoking index (odds ratio [OR] = 2.10, p = 0.012) and BMI (OR = 1.58, p = 2.29 × 10-5) were associated with elevated risk of BSGNs, whereas other exposures do not. Sensitivity analyses showed consistency. The causal effect of the lifetime smoking index became more significant after adjusting for BMI (OR = 2.89, p = 0.005) and alcohol consumption (OR = 2.49, p = 0.002). A slight negative association emerged for alcohol consumption with adjustment for cigarettes per day (OR = 0.53, p = 0.034) but disappeared when adjusting for cigarettes per day and BMI. CONCLUSION This study supports the independent causal role of lifetime smoking index and BMI in BSGNs risk.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to explore the characteristics of stigma in postoperative oral cancer patients to provide a reference for the formulation of targeted intervention measures. METHODS A qualitative study was conducted on 25 postoperative oral cancer patients in a tertiary A hospital in Hunan, China, from March to July 2021. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews focused on experiences of stigma were performed. The interview data was analyzed using the NVivo V.12 software based on the reflexive intuitive thematic analysis method. The paper complies with the COREQ. RESULTS The stigma experience of postoperative oral cancer patients can be divided into 3 themes: (1) triggers (impaired appearance and oral function and psycho-social pressure); (2) forms (overall isolation, unpleasant feeling of inferiority, and unpleasant social discrimination); (3) coping strategies (positive psychological adjustment, seeking social support and coming out of the unpleasant shadows). CONCLUSION Postoperative oral cancer patients clearly articulated that stigma was present in their lives and they experienced multiple forms of stigma. Further work is needed to increase education and awareness about oral cancer to guide them to take positive coping and reduce stigma.

Malignant salivary gland tumours: treatment outcomes from a tertiary referral centre in the UK. Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg 2023; 61:295-301. Abstract
Salivary gland malignant tumours are a complex and highly variable pathological group. Their diagnosis can be challenging, and management is guided by multidisciplinary teams. This project aimed to establish clinicopathological and sociodemographic features that significantly impacted overall disease-free or progression-free survival in patients diagnosed with malignant salivary gland disease between 2010 and 2019 in a tertiary referral centre. In total, 86 patients were included for analysis, with a female:male gender ratio of 1.3:1. Mean age at diagnosis was 57.7 years. Mucoepidermoid carcinomas constituted almost 25% (n = 20) of all cases, with adenoid cystic carcinomas (20%, n = 17) and acinic cell carcinomas (17.5%, n = 15) being the next most frequently diagnosed. The parotid gland was the most frequently affected site (80.2%, n = 69). Perineural and lymphovascular invasion, and a maximum tumour dimension of ≥4 cm were highly associated with the decision to provide a neck dissection as part of treatment. Involved margins, extracapsular spread, and lymphovascular and perineural invasion were associated with the need for adjuvant treatment. However, no factors remained statistically significant on multivariate analysis. This retrospective service evaluation demonstrates the difficulty of predicting treatment outcomes for patients diagnosed with malignant salivary gland disease.

Abstract
Background Surgical incision, endotracheal intubation, structural changes in the oral cavity, and other factors lead to a divergence in oral care between patients after oral surgery and ordinary inpatients. High-quality oral care can reduce the incidence of incision infection and ventilator-associated pneumonia. However, there is a lack of guidelines or expert consensus on oral care after oral cancer surgery. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the practicing situation of nurses in the intensive care unit (ICU) for postoperative patients with oral cancer and their need for training. Methods A multicenter cross-sectional study design was conducted in 19 ICUs of 11 tertiary hospitals from Henan province in China. Data were collected from 173 nurses and 19 head nurses online using a structured questionnaire. Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis H tests were performed to analyze the data using SPSS (Version 25.0). Results Seven ICUs (36.8%) developed evaluation regulations for the oral care of postoperative patients with oral cancer, and eight ICUs (42.1%) described the operating standards. A total of 173 nurses completed the questionnaire, and the median score was 75 (68, 78). Almost all of the examined nurses (91.2%) assessed patients’ oral hygiene at a fixed time, while in 52.0% and 28.3% of nurses, the first oral care and frequency of oral care after surgery was determined based on the individual patient’s situation. More than half of the nurses (55.5%) spent approximately 5–10 min conducting oral care for patients. Physiological saline solution (82.7%), swabbing (91.9%), and oral care package with cotton ball (86.1%) were the most popular oral care mouthwash, method, and tool, respectively. Nurses sought help from senior nurses (87.3%) and doctors (83.8%), mostly to solve difficulties of oral care. Moreover, 76.9% of the nurses believed that the lack of knowledge and skills surrounding oral care was the main barrier for nurses to implement oral care. The majority of participants (69.4%) had never received continuing education or training in oral care for postoperative patients with oral cancer, and almost all (98.8%) of the respondents stated their preference to receive training in standardized oral care skills. Indications and contraindications (84.4%), tools (81.5%), and mouthwash (80.9%) of oral care were the items that the respondents were most eager to learn about. Approximately three quarters of nurses preferred scenario simulation practice as the training method. Conclusion Although the participants had high oral care scores for postoperative patients with oral cancer, there was great diversity in the practice. The lack of oral care knowledge was deemed the main barrier in delivering quality oral care, and the educational need was stated by almost all participants. We suggest that a standard protocol or clinical practice guidelines for oral care for postoperative patients with oral cancer should be developed, and nurses should be educated to equip them with professional knowledge and skills.
