Does 1 + 1 = 2nd? The relations between children's understanding of ordinal position and their arithmetic performance

Uncovering the interplay between drawings, mental representations, and arithmetic problem-solving strategies in children and adults

There is an ongoing debate in the scientific community regarding the nature and role of the mental representations involved in solving arithmetic word problems. In this study, we took a closer look at the interplay between mental representations, drawing production, and strategy choice. We used dual-strategy isomorphic word problems sharing the same mathematical structure, but differing in the entities they mentioned in their problem statement. Due to the non-mathematical knowledge attached to these entities, some problems were believed to lead to a specific (cardinal) encoding compatible with one solving strategy, whereas other problems were thought to foster a different (ordinal) encoding compatible with the other solving strategy. We asked 59 children and 52 adults to solve 12 of those arithmetic word problems and to make a diagram of each problem. We hypothesized that the diagrams of both groups would display prototypical features indicating either a cardinal representation or an ordinal representation, depending on the entities mentioned in the problem statement. Joint analysis of the drawing task and the problem-solving task showed that the cardinal and ordinal features of the diagrams are linked with the hypothesized semantic properties of the problems and, crucially, with the choice of one solving strategy over another. We showed that regardless of their experience, participants' strategy use depends on their problem representation, which is influenced by the non-mathematical information in the problem statement, as revealed in their diagrams. We discuss the relevance of drawing tasks for investigating mental representations and fostering mathematical development in school.

Aprendizaje del conteo y los números naturales en preescolar: una revisión sistemática de la literatura

Aprender a contar cantidades discretas de forma exacta constituye uno de los primeros hitos del desarrollo del conocimiento matemático infantil. En los últimos años, ha habido un extenso debate en torno a cómo ocurre este proceso de aprendizaje en preescolar. La actual investigación tuvo como objetivo conocer las temáticas y preguntas de investigación generales desarrolladas en los últimos cinco años en cuanto al aprendizaje del conteo y los números naturales en preescolar. Para ello, se realizó una revisión sistemática en la que se hizo una indagación en las bases de datos ScienceDirect, EBSCO, Web of Science, SpringerLink, JSTOR y Sage. Se obtuvieron 98 artículos de investigación que fueron examinados mediante análisis de conglomerados y mapas jerárquicos a través de NVIVO 11.0.  Se encontraron cuatro núcleos temáticos (Ideas sobre los procesos cognitivos implicados en la comprensión del número, Representación de magnitudes numéricas, Intervenciones para favorecer el desarrollo de habilidades matemáticas y Aspectos estructurales del número), que muestran el panorama actual de investigación sobre aprendizaje del conteo. Los resultados de este estudio son importantes para delimitar posibles programas futuros de investigación, y pueden ser usados por docentes como insumo para enriquecer los ambientes de aprendizaje de sus aulas de clase.

Preschoolers prior formal mathematics education engage numerical magnitude representation rather than counting principles in symbolic +/-1 arithmetic: Evidence from the Operational Momentum effect

In numerical cognition research, the operational momentum (OM) phenomenon (tendency to overestimate the results of addition and/or binding addition to the right side and underestimating subtraction and/or binding it to the left side) can help illuminate the most basic representations and processes of mental arithmetic and their development. This study is the first to demonstrate OM in symbolic arithmetic in preschoolers. It was modeled on Haman and Lipowska's (2021) non-symbolic arithmetic task, using Arabic numerals instead of visual sets. Seventy-seven children (4-7 years old) who know Arabic numerals and counting principles, but without prior school math education, solved addition and subtraction problems presented as videos with 1 as the second operand. In principle, such problems may be difficult when involving a non-symbolic approximate number processing system, whereas in symbolic format they can be solved based solely on the successor/predecessor functions and knowledge of numerical orders, without reference to representation of numerical magnitudes. Nevertheless, participants made systematic errors, in particular, overestimating results of addition in line with the typical OM tendency. Moreover, subtraction and addition induced longer response times when primed with left- and right-directed movement, respectively, which corresponds to the reversed spatial form of OM. These results largely replicate those of non-symbolic task and show that children at early stages of mastering symbolic arithmetic may rely on numerical magnitude processing and spatial-numerical associations rather than newly-mastered counting principles and the concept of an exact number. When A is greater than B: Interactions between magnitude and serial order

Processing ordinal information is an important aspect of cognitive ability, yet the nature of such ordinal representations remains largely unclear. Previously, it has been suggested that ordinal position is coded as magnitude, but this claim has not yet received direct empirical support. This study examined the nature of ordinal representations using a Stroop-like letter order judgment task. If ordinal position is coded as magnitude, then letter ordering and font size should interact. Experiments 1 and 2 identified a significant interaction between letter size and ordering. Specifically, a facilitation effect was observed for alphabetically ordered sequences with decreasing font size (e.g., B C D). This suggests an overlap in the mechanisms for order and magnitude processing. The finding also suggests that earlier ranks may be represented as "more" in such a magnitude-based code, and vice versa for later ranks.
