The electrochemical reduction of aqueous hexamminecobalt(III): Studies of adsorption behaviour with fast scan voltammetry

On the kinetics of the absorption of nitric oxide into ammoniacal cobalt(II) solutions

Experiments were conducted using a custom double-stirred tank reactor to determine the rate constants of reactions between nitric oxide (NO) and both pentaaminecobalt(II) and hexaaminecobalt(II) at temperatures of 298.2 and 303.2 K and pH levels between 8.50 and 9.87 under atmospheric pressure. The NO concentration of simulated flue gas stream ranged from 400 to 1400 ppmv. Ammoniacal cobalt(II) solutions were prepared by adding aqueous ammonia into a cobalt(II) nitrate solution in the presence of concentrated ammonium nitrate. The reaction rate constants were calculated with an enhancement factor for gas absorption associated with parallel chemical reactions. The results showed that the reaction between NO and pentaaminecobalt(II) was first order with respect to both the NO and the pentaamminecobalt(II) ion. Similarly, the reaction between NO and hexaamminecobalt(II) was first order with respect to both the NO and the hexaamminecobalt(II) ion. The forward reaction rate constants of these two reactions were 6.43 × 10(6) and 1.00 × 10(7) L · mol(-1) · s(-1) at 298.2 K, respectively, and increased to 7.57 × 10(6) and 1.12 × 10(7) L · mol(-1) · s(-1) at 303.2 K, respectively. Ammoniacal cobalt(II) solutions also have the potential to simultaneously remove CO2, SO2, and NOx from postcombustion flue gas.

Beyond the Butler-Volmer equation. Curved Tafel slopes from steady-state current-voltage curves

We report the discovery and analysis of curved Tafel slopes from the electrochemical reduction of hexamminecobalt(III) under steady-state conditions. In order to confirm the existence of the curvature, random assemblies of carbon microelectrodes (RAM™ electrodes) were employed to obtain experimental data over more than three orders of magnitude, without significant double layer charging currents and without ohmic distortion. Since the rate-determining step in the reduction reaction is electron transfer, and no ligand substitution reactions occur on the timescale of experiments, the curvature of the Tafel plot is attributed to the dependence of the symmetry factor on electrode potential.

Evanescent wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy as a probe of interfacial adsorption: interaction of Tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) with silica surfaces and polyelectrolyte films

Evanescent wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (EW-CRDS) has been used to study the interaction of the tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) complex, [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+), at both native silica surfaces and surfaces modified with polyelectrolyte films. Both poly-l-lysine (PLL) and PLL/poly-l-glutamic acid (PGA) bilayer functionalized interfaces have been studied. Concentration isotherms exhibit Langmuir-type adsorption behavior on both silica and PGA-terminated surfaces from which equilibrium constants have been derived. The pH-dependence of the [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) adsorption to silica and the PLL/PGA film has also been investigated. For the latter substrate, the effective surface pK(a) of the acid groups was found to be 5.5. The effect of supporting electrolyte was also investigated and was shown to have a significant effect on the extent of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) adsorption. A thin-layer electrochemical cell arrangement, in which a working electrode was positioned just above the substrate, was used to change the solution pH in a controlled way via the potential-pulsed chronoamperometric oxidation of water. By measuring the optical absorption using EW-CRDS during such experiments, the desorption of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) from the surface has been monitored in real time. Experiments were carried out at different cell thicknesses and at various pulse durations. By combining data from the EW-CRDS experiments with fluorescence confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) to determine the pH at the substrate surface, the pK(a) of the PLL/PGA film could be ascertained and was found to agree with the static pH isotherm measurements. These studies provide a platform for the further use of electrochemistry combined with EW-CRDS to investigate dynamic processes at interfaces.

Homogeneous solvation controlled photoreduction of cobalt(III) complexes in aqueous 2-methyl-2-propanol solutions linear solvation energy relationship and cyclic voltammetric analyses

The effect of solvent participation on the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT, L-->Co(III)) reduction of the of Co(III)(en)(2)Br(RC(6)H(4)NH(2))(2+) where R=m-OCH(3), p-F, H, m-CH(3), p-CH(3,)p-OC(2)H(5) and p-OCH(3) were examined in aqueous 2-methyl-2-propanol (Bu(t)OH) solutions. The change in the reduction behavior of Co(III) centre was also examined through cyclic voltammetric studies. The observed reduction in quantum yield due to LMCT excitation can mainly be accounted using linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) comprising model correlation equations. These consist of empirical parameters such as Grunwald-Winstein's solvent ionizing power, Y, Dimroth-Richardt's solvent micro-polarity parameter, E(T)(N), Gutmann's donor number, DN(N), along with Kamlet-Taft's solvatochromic parameters (hydrogen bond acceptor acidity/basicity alpha/beta and solvent dipolarity/polarizability, pi*). The origin of solvent effect is found to be due to microscopic interaction between the solvent donor and the nitrogen-bound hydrogen of the ligand. Cyclic voltammograms show an irreversible reduction of Co(III) in DMF using Glassy Carbon Electrode, GCE, the redox peaks for the aniline complexes appear at -0.20 and 0.525V. Irradiation of the complexes with UV light (lambda=254nm) in binary mixtures produce Co(II)(aq) and the concentration of this species are highly dependent on x(alc) (x(alc)=mole fraction of alcohol). The observed quantum yield (logPhi(Co(II))) is found to be linearly related to mole fraction of organic co-solvent added in the mixture, therefore, logPhi(Co(II))=26.41 x 10(-2) when x(2)=0.0094 and 43.75 x 10(-2) when x(2)=0.076 for a typical complex Co(III)(en)(2)Br(p-OCH(3)C(6)H(4)NH(2))(2+) in aqueous 2-methyl-2-propanol at 300K. Cyclic voltammetry and LSER analyses illustrate the variation of reduction property of Co(III) by the aryl ligand and homogeneous solvation of the excited state of the complex Co(III)(en)(2)Br(RC(6)H(4)NH(2))(2+) in H(2)O/Bu(t)OH mixtures.
