Stability of di-butyl-dichalcogenide-capped gold nanoparticles: experimental data and theoretical insights

Metals capped with organochalcogenides have attracted considerable interest due to their practical applications, which include catalysis, sensing, and biosensing, due to their optical, magnetic, electrochemical, adhesive, lubrication, and antibacterial properties. There are numerous reports of metals capped with organothiol molecules; however, there are few studies on metals capped with organoselenium or organotellurium. Thus, there is a gap to be filled regarding the properties of organochalcogenide systems which can be improved by replacing sulfur with selenium or tellurium. In the last decade, there has been significant development in the synthesis of selenium and tellurium compounds; however, it is difficult to find commercial applications of these compounds because there are few studies showing the feasibility of their synthesis and their advantages compared to organothiol compounds. Stability against oxidation by molecular oxygen under ambient conditions is one of the properties which can be improved by choosing the correct organochalcogenide; this can confer important advantages for many more suitable applications. This paper reports the successful synthesis and characterization of gold nanoparticles functionalized with organochalcogenide molecules (dibutyl-disulfide, dibutyl-diselenide and dibutyl-ditelluride) and evaluates the oxidation stability of the organochalcogenides. Spherical gold nanoparticles with diameters of 24 nm were capped with organochalcogenides and were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to show the improved stability of organoselenium compared with organothiol and organotellurium. The results suggest that the organoselenium is a promising candidate to replace organothiol because of its enhanced stability towards oxidation by molecular oxygen under ambient conditions and its slow oxidation rate. The observed difference in the oxidation processes, as discussed, is also in agreement with theoretical calculations.

Ionic liquid based approach for single-molecule electronics with cobalt contacts

An electrochemical method is presented for fabricating cobalt thin films for single-molecule electrical transport measurements. These films are electroplated in an aqueous electrolyte, but the crucial stages of electrochemical reduction to remove surface oxide and adsorption of alkane(di)thiol target molecules under electrochemical control to form self-assembled monolayers which protect the oxide-free cobalt surface are carried out in an ionic liquid. This approach yields monolayers on Co that are of comparable quality to those formed on Au by standard self-assembly protocols, as assessed by electrochemical methods and surface infrared spectroscopy. Using an adapted scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) method, we have determined the single-molecule conductance of cobalt/1,8-octanedithiol/cobalt junctions by employing a monolayer on cobalt and a cobalt STM tip in an ionic liquid environment and have compared the results with those of experiments using gold electrodes as a control. These cobalt substrates could therefore have future application in organic spintronic devices such as magnetic tunnel junctions.

Self-assembled selenium monolayers: from nanotechnology to materials science and adaptive catalysis

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of selenium have emerged into a rapidly developing field of nanotechnology with several promising opportunities in materials chemistry and catalysis. Comparison between sulfur-based self-assembled monolayers and newly developed selenium-based monolayers reveal outstanding complimentary features on surface chemistry and highlighted the key role of the headgroup element. Diverse structural properties and reactivity of organosulfur and organoselenium groups on the surface provide flexible frameworks to create new generations of materials and adaptive catalysts with unprecedented selectivity. Important practical utility of adaptive catalytic systems deals with development of sustainable technologies and industrial processes based on natural resources. Independent development of nanotechnology, materials science and catalysis has led to the discovery of common fundamental principles of the surface chemistry of chalcogen compounds.

The characterization of self-assembled monolayers on copper surfaces by low-temperature plasma mass spectrometry

We describe direct analysis of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on copper surfaces by low temperature plasma (LTP) mass spectroscopy (MS). Two kinds of SAMs formed from n-dodecylmercaptan (NDM) and l-phenyl-5-mercaptotetrazole (PMTA) were prepared on copper by spontaneous chemisorption. With the LTP probe, desorption and ionization of the SAMs was easily achieved, and the ions produced were introduced into MS for analysis. Characteristic fragment ions from NDM SAMs, mainly [M + M - H](+) (M is the NDM molecule) and from PMTA SAMs, mainly [M + H - S](+) (M is the PMTA molecule), were both absent in the MS spectra of neat NDM and PMTA samples. This provided evidence of the formation of SAMs on copper. As a supplementary method, LTP-MS is helpful in obtaining information on the barrier properties of SAMs on copper, such as inhibitor efficiency (IE) and the surface adsorption concentration of corrosive electrolyte (Γ*) surrounding copper. Aiming for an evaluation of the reliability of LTP-MS, a comparative study of our method and the traditional method of cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed a correlation coefficient higher than 0.97. In addition, a rough, simple procedure for imaging of the distribution of the molecules adsorbed on copper surface was presented. The study supplied a rapid and simple method for direct investigation of SAMs on copper.
