Advances of Transition Metal-Based Electrochemical Non-enzymatic Glucose Sensors for Glucose Analysis: A Review

Glucose concentration is a crucial parameter for assessing human health. Over recent years, non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors have drawn considerable attention due to their substantial progress. This review explores the common mechanism behind the transition metal-based electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose molecules through classical electrocatalytic frameworks like the Pletcher model and the Hydrous Oxide-Adatom Mediator model (IHOAM), as well as the redox reactions at the transition metal centers. It further compiles the electrochemical characterization techniques, associated formulas, and their ensuing conclusions pertinent to transition metal-based non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors. Subsequently, the review covers the latest advancements in the field of transition metal-based active materials and support materials used in non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors in the last decade (2014-2023). Additionally, it presents a comprehensive classification of representative studies according to the active metal catalysts components involved.

3D Nanocomposite with High Aspect Ratio Based on Polyaniline Decorated with Silver NPs: Synthesis and Application as Electrochemical Glucose Sensor

In this paper, we present a new methodology for creating 3D ordered porous nanocomposites based on anodic aluminum oxide template with polyaniline (PANI) and silver NPs. The approach includes in situ synthesis of polyaniline on templates of anodic aluminum oxide nanomembranes and laser-induced deposition (LID) of Ag NPs directly on the pore walls. The proposed method allows for the formation of structures with a high aspect ratio of the pores, topological ordering and uniformity of properties throughout the sample, and a high specific surface area. For the developed structures, we demonstrated their effectiveness as non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors on glucose in a concentration range crucial for medical applications. The obtained systems possess high potential for miniaturization and were applied to glucose detection in real objects-laboratory rat blood plasma.

Ultrasmall Pt Nanozymes Immobilized on Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes with Robust Peroxidase-like Activity for Highly Sensitive Detection of Cysteine

Distinct platinum (Pt) nanozymes as peroxidase mimics have received extensive interest owing to their outstanding catalytic activity, high environmental tolerance, lower consumption, and great potential in replacing natural enzymes. However, easy agglomeration of Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) resulting from the high surface free energy significantly decrease their peroxidase-like activity. Herein, spherical polyelectrolyte brush (SPB)-stabilized ultrasmall Pt NPs (SPB@Pt NPs) were prepared by a novel synthetic strategy where the SPB not only performed as a nanoreactor for the synthesis of ultrasmall Pt NPs but also greatly stabilized Pt NPs against aggregation. The well-defined SPB@Pt NP nanozymes exhibited outstanding peroxidase-like activity for the catalytic oxidation of colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxidized TMB and were then used to establish a colorimetric sensor for rapid detection of cysteine, giving a limit of detection of 0.11 μM. Moreover, the colorimetric detection system was demonstrated with outstanding performance in sensitive and selective detection of cysteine in the presence of several interference molecules. From these results, SPB@Pt NPs have been regarded as promising peroxidase mimics for a large number of applications such as in biosensing, biomedicine, the food industry, and environmental chemistry.

External and Internal Stimuli-Responsive Metallic Nanotherapeutics for Enhanced Anticancer Therapy

Therapeutic, diagnostic, and imaging approaches based on nanotechnology offer distinct advantages in cancer treatment. Various nanotherapeutics have been presented as potential alternatives to traditional anticancer therapies such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgical intervention. Notably, the advantage of nanotherapeutics is mainly attributable to their accumulation and targeting ability toward cancer cells, multiple drug-carrying abilities, combined therapies, and imaging approaches. To date, numerous nanoparticle formulations have been developed for anticancer therapy and among them, metallic nanotherapeutics reportedly demonstrate promising cancer therapeutic and diagnostic efficiencies owing to their dense surface functionalization ability, uniform size distribution, and shape-dependent optical responses, easy and cost-effective synthesis procedure, and multiple anti-cancer effects. Metallic nanotherapeutics can remodel the tumor microenvironment by changing unfavorable therapeutic conditions into therapeutically accessible ones with the help of different stimuli, including light, heat, ultrasound, an alternative magnetic field, redox, and reactive oxygen species. The combination of metallic nanotherapeutics with both external and internal stimuli can be used to trigger the on-demand release of therapeutic molecules, augmenting the therapeutic efficacies of anticancer therapies such as photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, magnetic hyperthermia, sonodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy, and immunotherapy. In this review, we have summarized the role of different metallic nanotherapeutics in anti-cancer therapy, as well as their combinational effects with multiple stimuli for enhanced anticancer therapy.
