Abstract
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 few years ago, the increasing of the number of medical waste has become a huge issue because of their harmful impact to environment. A major concern associated to the limitation of technologies for dealing with medical waste, especially conventional technologies, are overcapacities since pandemic occurs. Moreover, the outbreak of new viruses from post COVID-19 should become a serious attention to be prevented not only environmental issues but also the spreading of viruses to new pandemic near the future. The high possibility of an outbreak of new viruses and mutation near the future should be prevented based on the experience associated with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the last 3 yr. This review presented information and strategies for handling medical waste during the outbreak of COVID-19 and post-COVID-19, and also information on the current issues related to technologies, such as incineration, pyrolysis/gasification, autoclaves and microwave treatment for the dealing with high numbers of medical waste in COVID-19 to prevent the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 virus, their advantages and disadvantages. Plasma technology can be considered to be implemented as an alternative technology to deal with medical waste since incinerator is usually over capacities during the pandemic situation. Proper treatment of specific medical waste in pandemics, namely face masks, vaccine vials, syringes, and dead bodies, are necessary because those medical wastes are mediums for transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Furthermore, emission controls from incinerator and plasma are necessary to be implemented to reduce the high concentration of CO2, NOx, and VOCs during the treatment. Finally, future strategies of medical waste treatment in the perspective of potential outbreak pandemic from new mutation viruses are discussed in this review paper.Implications: Journal of the air and waste management association may consider our review paper to be published. In this review, we give important information related to the technologies, managements and strategies for handling the medical waste and control the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 virus, starting from proper technology to control the high number of medical waste, their pollutants and many strategies for controlling the spreading of SARS-CoV-2 virus. Moreover, this review also describes some strategies associated with control the transmission not only the SARS-CoV-2 virus but also the outbreak of new viruses near the future.

Abstract
Inactivation of bacterial spores is a key objective for developing novel food preservation technologies. In this work, the removal properties of filtering materials based on silica microparticles functionalized with essential oil components (EOCs) (carvacrol, eugenol, thymol, and vanillin) against Bacillus subtilis, a spore-forming bacterium, in two liquid matrices were investigated. The viability of vegetative cells and spores after treatment was also evaluated. The results exhibited marked removal effectiveness against B. subtilis vegetative cells and spores after filtration with the different silica supports coated with EOCs in either sterile water or nutrient broth, with reductions of 3.2 to 4.9 log units and 3.7 to 5.0 log units for vegetative cells and spores, respectively. The fluorescent viability images revealed the poor viability of the treated B. subtilis vegetative cells and spores due to damage to the cell envelope when coming into contact with the immobilized antimicrobials. The culture counts results revealed the great inhibitory capacity of the EOC-functionalized silica microparticles against B. subtilis vegetative cells and spores after a single filtration. Hence, the present work suggests the feasibility of using EOC-functionalized supports as filtering aids to enhance the microbial quality of liquid matrices with spore-forming microorganisms. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The developed antimicrobial-coated filters have shown remarkable removal properties against an important spore-forming bacterium in food industry. These filters may be used as a potential sterilization technique for preservation of different beverages alone or in combination with other mild-thermal or nonthermal techniques.

Abstract
Microorganisms thriving in hot springs and hydrothermally active volcanic areas are dynamically involved in heavy-metal biogeochemical cycles; they have developed peculiar resistance systems to cope with such metals which nowadays can be considered among the most permanent and toxic pollutants for humans and the environment. For this reason, their exploitation is functional to unravel mechanisms of toxic-metal detoxification and to address bioremediation of heavy-metal pollution with eco-sustainable approaches. In this work, we isolated a novel strain of the thermophilic bacterium Geobacillus stearothermophilus from the solfataric mud pool in Pisciarelli, a well-known hydrothermally active zone of the Campi Flegrei volcano located near Naples in Italy, and characterized it by ribotyping, 16S rRNA sequencing and mass spectrometry analyses. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) toward several heavy-metal ions indicated that the novel G. stearothermophilus isolate is particularly resistant to some of them. Functional and morphological analyses suggest that it is endowed with metal resistance systems for arsenic and cadmium detoxification.

Abstract
The vegetative cells and spores of Geobacillus spp. and Anoxybacillus flavithermus were subjected to 20 kHz ultrasound with a power ∼8 W. Ultrasonication had considerable effect on vegetative cells (5-log reduction in Geobacillus spp. and 1.6-log reduction in A.flavithermus). TEM imaging of the ultrasonicated vegetative cells showed an extensive damage both internally and externally. However, spores showed high resistance towards ultrasound treatment in the absence of NaOH and H2O2, although the outer layers such as the exosporium and the outer coat layer were disrupted, resulting in the reduced resistance of spores towards sonication. The combination of 0.12 M NaOH and 10 min ultrasonication inactivated 6 log spores of Geobacillus spp. A 7 log spore reduction of A.flavithermus was achieved by combining 0.17 M NaOH with 10 min ultrasonication. Ultrasonication combined with 1% H2O2 inactivated ∼7 log Geobacillus spp. spores in 6 min and ∼7 log A.flavithermus spores in 3 min. These ultrasound treatments in the presence of NaOH and H2O2 are synergistic as they showed a greater spore reduction when compared to NaOH combined with high temperature (85 °C), where only 1 and 3 log reduction was achieved in Geobacillus spp. and A.flavithermus spores, respectively.

Abstract
Alkalization is a step of cocoa processing and consists of the use of alkali and high temperature to improve the sensorial and technological qualities of cocoa. Intense food processing can select spores, which can compromise safety and quality of the final product. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the fate of B. cereus and G. stearothermophilus spores during the alkalization of pre-roasted (Pr) nibs (held at 120 °C) and unroasted (Ur) nibs (held at 90 °C) using potassium carbonate (0, 2, 4 and 6% w/w). In all conditions, log-linear inactivation kinetics with a tail was observed. The inactivation rate (kmax) for B. cereus varied from 0.065 to 1.67 min-1, whereas the kmax for G. stearothermophilus varied from 0.012 to 0.063 min-1. For both microorganisms, the lowest kmax values were observed during Ur nibs alkalization. The carbonate concentration increase promoted kmax values reduction. The highest tail values were observed for G. stearothermophilus in Ur nibs alkalization, reaching 3.04 log spores/g. Tail formation and low kmax values indicated that cocoa alkalization does not cause significant reductions on bacterial spore population. Therefore, the microbiological control should be primarily ensured by the raw material quality and by avoiding recontamination in the cocoa chain.
