Combustible wood dust explosions and impacts on environments and health - A review

Wood dust is the major wastes from timber and wood-based panel processing, including wood sawing, sanding, chipping, flaking, etc., which easily causes fire and explosions. The fine wood dust had risks of inhaling the dust air, causing problems to the respiratory system of workers, as well as the explosive risk of the wood dust-air mixture. Wood dust explosions occur worldwide, which have caused massive damages to equipment, buildings, and environments, killed people, and threatened human health. This study was aimed at exploring the causes, affecting factors, mechanisms, models of wood dust explosions, and their environmental/health impacts through reviewing and analyzing the collected data in order to minimize wood dust explosion risks by improving of safety procedures in the wood processing industry. To better understood and prevent wood dust explosion cases in the future, this review collected the explosion reports and analyzed the accident information through the following aspects: 1) Summarization of published review articles regarding wood dust explosions in Introduction, 2) Scrutinization of wood dust explosion cases and design of testing device, 3) Exploration of effects of wood dust properties and surrounding conditions on explosion and their mechanisms, 4) Investigation of methods for reducing wood dust explosion risks, 5) Modeling and simulation of wood dust explosions, 6) Examination of environmental and health impacts of wood dust explosions. Finally, the findings in this review were summarized in Conclusions. By collecting dust explosion reports, reviewing literature, and analyzing the collected data, wood dust explosions can be better understood. The results of this study can be useful for the design of equipment and dust absorption systems, as well as further suggestion of safety improvement procedures to minimize or eliminate risks of wood dust-related fire and explosion in the wood processing industry and mitigate its impacts on environments and health.

Fire Parameters of Spruce (Picea abies Karst. (L.)) Dust Layer from Different Wood Technologies Slovak Case Study

The issue of the formation of wood dust particles in the work environment is still an actual topic in terms of its impact on employee health and the risk of fire or explosion in a woodworking operation. This article deals with the characteristics of spruce dust (Picea abies Karst. (L.)), which was taken from several types of wood technology. Experimental samples of spruce dust were taken from four types of sawing technologies, including grinding, briquetting and from the suction device container. The physical parameters of the samples taken were monitored and the particle size analysis was determined. The granulometric composition of the samples is significantly different. The sample of spruce wood dust from sawing has the most numerous fraction (250 µm), while the sample from grinding has the most numerous fraction 63–250 µm (87%).The aim of the paper was to monitor the minimum ignition temperature of the settled spruce dust layer and to look for a significant dependence of the minimum ignition temperature and ignition time on the type of spruce dust sample. A significant dependence was not confirmed. Significant moisture dependence of the samples was confirmed; the highest humidity was observed in the container, the lowest in sawing.

Modeling Viscosity and Density of Ethanol-Diesel-Biodiesel Ternary Blends for Sustainable Environment

Rapid depletion in fossil fuels, inflation in petroleum prices, and rising energy demand have forced towards alternative transport fuels. Among these alternative fuels, diesel-ethanol and diesel-biodiesel blends gain the most attention due to their quality characteristics and environmentally friendly nature. The viscosity and density of these biodiesel blends are slightly higher than diesel, which is a significant barrier to the commercialization of biodiesel. In this study, the density and viscosity of 30 different ternary biodiesel blends was investigated at 15 °С and 40 °С, respectively. Different density and viscosity models were developed and tested on biodiesel blends soured from different feedstock’s including palm, coconut, soybean, mustard, and calophyllum oils. The prognostic ability and precisions of these developed models was assessed statistically using Absolute Percentage Error (APE) and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE). The MAPE of 0.045% and 0.085% for density model and 1.85%, 1.41%, 3.48% and 2.27%, 1.85%, 3.50% for viscosity models were obtained on % volume and % mass basis. These developed correlations are useful for ternary biodiesel blends where alcohols are the part of biodiesel blends. The modeled values of densities and viscosities of ternary blends were significantly comparable with the measured densities and viscosities, which are feasible to avoid the harm of vehicles’ operability.

CO2 capture through electro-conductive adsorbent using physical adsorption system for sustainable development

The most critical energy and environmental challenge that our planet is facing today is to minimize the dependence on fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide may be of utmost significance as a solution of this issue through realization of carbon neutral energy cycle. Potentially, this could be achieved through the carbon dioxide capture as the urgent response to ongoing climate change. Activated carbon (AC) adsorption is one the most effective, environment friendly and techno-economic process for the carbon capture. In the current research, an electro-conductive-activated carbon was prepared by mixing powdered activated carbon (PAC) with an electro-conductive polymer (ECP). Different ratios of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 wt% of ECP with PAC were used for the different analyses of activated carbons in a gas mixture of CO₂/N₂ using a physical adsorption system. Adsorption and desorption analyses, capacities of the process and desorption effects were examined. Electro-conductive polymers (ECP) were mixed with AC samples, where breakthrough time was increased up to 400% when mixed with the PAC for CO₂ adsorption. Following adsorption analysis, desorption of activated carbons was conducted with different potentials. It was revealed that mixing could help the PAC sample to overcome the packing issue to increase the breakthrough capacity and the volumes before and after the breakthrough adsorption in the packed bed systems. The desorption rates of the PAC sample were also enhanced, and fast desorption was observed when mixed with ECP. It is envisioned that this method is very much promising carbon capture method for the techno-economic feasibility and sustainable development of the environment.

Use of Gasoline, LPG and LPG-HHO Blend in SI Engine: A Comparative Performance for Emission Control and Sustainable Environment

The rising global warming concerns and explosive degradation of the environment requires the mainstream utilization of alternative fuels, such as hydroxy gas (HHO) which presents itself as a viable substitute for extracting the benefits of hydrogen. Therefore, an experimental study of the performance and emission characteristics of alternative fuels in contrast to conventional gasoline was undertaken. For experimentation, a spark ignition engine was run on a multitude of fuels comprising of gasoline, Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and hybrid blend of HHO with LPG. The engine was operated at 60% open throttle with engine speed ranging from 1600 rpm to 3400 rpm. Simultaneously, the corresponding performance parameters including brake specific fuel consumption, brake power and brake thermal efficiency were investigated. Emission levels of CO, CO2, HC and NOx were quantified in the specified speed range. To check the suitability of the acquired experimental data, it was subjected to a Weibull distribution fit. Enhanced performance efficiency and reduced emissions were observed with the combustion of the hybrid mixture of LPG with HHO in comparison to LPG: on average, brake power increased by 7% while the brake specific fuel consumption reduced by 15%. On the other hand, emissions relative to LPG decreased by 21%, 9% and 21.8% in cases of CO, CO2, and unburned hydrocarbons respectively. Incorporating alternative fuels would not only imply reduced dependency on conventional fuels but would also contribute to their sustainability for future generations. Simultaneously, the decrease in harmful environmental pollutants would help to mitigate and combat the threats of climate change.

Explosion parameters and combustion kinetics of biomass dust

In this study, a 20-L spherical explosion vessel, hot plate apparatus, Godbert-Greenwald furnace apparatus, and TG-FTIR were used to investigate the explosion and combustion characteristics of three biomass dusts: dalbergia cochinchinensis (DC), pine sawdust (PS), and cupressus funebris (CF). DC with lower minimum explosible concentration (70-80 g/m³), larger maximum explosion pressure (0.742 MPa) and larger maximum explosion pressure rise rate (80.14 MPa/s) had the greatest explosion hazard in three biomass dusts. The apparent activation energy of DC and CF were lower than that of PS, and the main gas products of three samples included CO₂, CO, CH₃COOH, and H₂O. The volatile matter content of DC characterized by the weight loss and the number of gas products of combustion process was higher than those of PS and CF, showing that the volatile matter content of biomass dust was one of the main factors affecting combustion and explosion hazard.
