Those That Remain Caught in the "Organic Matter Trap": Sorption/Desorption Study for Levelling the Fate of Selected Neonicotinoids

With projections suggesting an increase in the global use of neonicotinoids, contemporary farmers can get caught on the "pesticide treadmill", thus creating ecosystem side effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the sorption/desorption behavior of acetamiprid, imidacloprid, and thiacloprid that controls their availability to other fate-determining processes and thus could be useful in leveling the risk these insecticides or their structural analogues pose to the environment, animals, and human health. Sorption/desorption isotherms in four soils with different organic matter (OC) content were modelled by nonlinear equilibrium models: Freundlich's, Langmuir's, and Temkin's. Sorption/desorption parameters obtained by Freundlich's model were correlated to soil physico-chemical characteristics. Even though the OC content had the dominant role in the sorption of the three insecticides, the role of its nature as well as the chemical structure of neonicotinoids cannot be discarded. Insecticides sorbed in the glassy OC phase will be poorly available unlike those in the rubbery regions. Imidacloprid will fill the sorption sites equally in the rubbery and glassy phases irrespective of its concentration. The sorption of thiacloprid at low concentrations and acetamiprid at high concentrations is controlled by hydrophilic aromatic structures, "trapping" the insecticides in the pores of the glassy phase of OC.

A comprehensive evaluation of influencing factors of neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) in farmland soils across China: First focus on film mulching

Neonicotinoid insecticide (NEO) residues in agricultural soils have concerning and adverse effects on agroecosystems. Previous studies on the effects of farmland type on NEOs are limited to comparing greenhouses with open fields. On the other hand, both NEOs and microplastics (MPs) are commonly found in agricultural fields, but their co-occurrence characteristics under realistic fields have not been reported. This study grouped farmlands into three types according to the covering degree of the film, collected 391 soil samples in mainland China, and found significant differences in NEO residues in the soils of the three different farmlands, with greenhouse having the highest NEO residue, followed by farmland with film mulching and farmland without film mulching (both open fields). Furthermore, this study found that MPs were significantly and positively correlated with NEOs. As far as we know this is the first report to disclose the association of film mulching and MPs with NEOs under realistic fields. Moreover, multiple linear regression and random forest models were used to comprehensively evaluate the factors influencing NEOs (including climatic, soil, and agricultural indicators). The results indicated that the random forest model was more reliable, with MPs, farmland type, and total nitrogen having higher relative contributions.

Comparative evaluation of neonicotinoids and their metabolites-induced oxidative stress in carp primary leukocytes and CLC cells

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) have been designed to act selectively on insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). However, nAChRs are also expressed in vertebrate immune cells, so NEOs may interfere with the immune system in exposed non-target animals. The present study shows that NEOs: imidacloprid and thiacloprid, and their main metabolites: desnitro-imidacloprid and thiacloprid amide, at sub-micromolar concentrations ranging from 2.25 to 20 μM, affect the immune cells of fish. This was found both in primary cultures of leukocytes isolated from the carp head kidney and in the continuous adherent carp monocyte/macrophage cell line. Moreover, the results revealed that the studied pesticides and metabolites generate oxidative stress in carp immune cells and that this is one of the most important mechanisms of neonicotinoid immunotoxicity. Significant increases were observed in the formation of ROS and malondialdehyde (MDA). The antioxidant status alteration was linked with decrease in antioxidant enzyme activity: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and non-enzymatic antioxidant glutathione (GSH). Importantly, the metabolites: desnitro-imidacloprid and thiacloprid amide showed significantly higher cytotoxicity towards fish leukocytes than their parent compounds, imidacloprid and thiacloprid, which emphasizes the importance of including intermediate metabolites in toxicology studies.

Remediation of neonicotinoid-contaminated soils using peanut shell biochar and composted chicken manure: Transformation mechanisms of geochemical fractions

Soil remediation techniques are promising approaches to relieve the adverse environmental impacts in soils caused by neonicotinoids application. This study systematically investigated the remediation mechanisms for peanut shell biochar (PSB) and composted chicken manure (CCM) on neonicotinoid-contaminated soils from the perspective of transformation of geochemical fractions by combining a 3-step sequential extraction procedure and non-steady state model. The neonicotinoid geochemical fractions were divided into labile, moderate-adsorbed, stable-adsorbed, bound, and degradable fractions. The PSB and CCM addition stimulated the neonicotinoid transformation in soils from labile fraction to moderate-adsorbed and stable-adsorbed fractions. Compared with unamended soils, the labile fractions decreased from 47.6% ± 11.8% of the initial concentrations to 12.1 ± 9.3% in PSB-amended soils, and 7.1 ± 4.9% in PSB and CCM-amended soils, while the proportions of moderate-adsorbed and stable-adsorbed fractions correspondingly increased by 1.8-2.4 times and 2.3-4.8 times, respectively. A small proportion (<4.8%) in bound fractions suggested there were rather limited bound-residues after 48 days incubation. The PSB stimulated the -NO2-containing neonicotinoid-degraders, which promoted the degradable fractions of corresponding neonicotinoids by 8.2 ± 6.3%. Degradable fraction of neonicotinoids was the dominant fate in soils, which accounted for 58.3 ± 16.7%. The findings made beneficial theoretical supplements and provided valuable empirical evidence for the remediation of neonicotinoid-contaminated soils.

Development an electronic nose to recognize pesticides in groundwater

Timely detection of Groundwater pollution is essential to protect human health, especially for pesticide pollution. To solve this issue, we proposed a novel solution to realize the prediction of pesticide in groundwater by using the electronic nose (e-nose). The main work of this paper was divided into three steps: 1) checking whether sample was polluted by pesticides, 2) further predicting the pesticide type, brand and pollution degree when the sample was polluted by pesticides, and 3) optimizing the sensor array. Random forest was used to complete the first step, which had the best accuracy and sensitivity of 100 %. Support vector machine was applied to complete the second step, and the accuracy reaching 98.08 %. As for the third step, recursive feature elimination was used to optimize the sensor array. After optimization, the number of sensors was reduced from 26 to 8. In addition, the e-nose developed in this paper was compared with a commercial e-nose. The results showed that the cost of the developed e-nose was much lower than that of the commercial e-nose despite its slightly weaker prediction performance. Thus, this e-nose can be employed to recognize the pesticides in groundwater, and even can be integrated into the while drilling technology to realize the in-situ detection of groundwater.

Spatiotemporal dynamics and modeling of thiacloprid in paddy multimedia systems with the effect of wetting-drying cycles

The widespread presence of thiacloprid (THI), a neonicotinoid, raises concerns for human health and the aquatic environment due to its persistence, toxicity, and bioaccumulation. The fate of THI in paddy multimedia systems is mainly governed by irrigation practices, but the potential impacts remain poorly documented. This study investigated the effects of water management practices on THI spatiotemporal dynamics in paddy multimedia systems by combining soil column experiments and a non-steady-state multimedia model. The results indicated the wetting-drying cycle (WDC) irrigation reduced THI occurrences in environmental phases (i.e., soil, interstitial water, and overlying water) and accelerated the THI loss through the THI aerobic degradation process. THI occurrences in the soil and water phases decreased from 18.8% for conventional flooding (CF) treatment to 9.2% for severe wetting-drying cycle (SW) treatment after 29 days, while the half-lives shortened from 11.1 days to 7.3 days, respectively. Meanwhile, the WDC decreased THI outflow from leakage water, which reduced the THI risk of leaching. There was no significant difference in THI plant uptake and volatilization between CF and WDC treatments. The mean proportions of THI fate in paddy multimedia systems followed the order: THI degradation (57.7%), outflow from leakage water (25.5%), occurrence in soil (12.4%), plant uptake (3.4%), occurrence in interstitial water (0.7%), occurrence in overlying water (0.3%), volatilization (<0.1%) after 29 days. The sensitivity analysis identified the soil organic carbon partition coefficient (KOC) as the most sensitive parameter affecting THI's fate. In addition, the topsoil layers of 0-4 cm were the main sink of THI, holding 67% of THI occurrence in the soil phase. The THI occurrence in interstitial water was distributed evenly throughout the soil profile. These findings made beneficial theoretical supplements and provided valuable empirical evidence for water management practices to reduce the THI ecological risk.

Low-molecular-weight organic acids-mediated transport of neonicotinoid pesticides through saturated soil porous media: Combined effects of the molecular structures of organic acids and the chemical properties of contaminants

Empirical information about the transport properties of neonicotinoid pesticides through the soil as affected by the ubiquitous low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) is lacking. Herein, the impacts of three LMWOAs with different molecular structures, including citric acid, acetic acid, and malic acid, on the mobility characteristics of two typical neonicotinoid pesticides (Dinotefuran (DTF) and Nitenpyram (NTP)) were explored. Interestingly, under acidic conditions, different mechanisms were involved in transporting DTF and NTP by adding exogenous LMWOAs. Concretely, acetic acid and malic acid inhibited DTF transport, ascribed to the enhanced electrostatic attraction between DTF and porous media and the additional binding sites provided by the deposited LMWOAs. However, citric acid slightly enhanced DTF mobility due to the fact that the inhibitory effect was weakened by the steric hindrance effect induced by the deposited citric acid with a large molecular size. In comparison, all three LMWOAs promoted NTP transport at pH 5.0. Because the interaction between NTP with soil organic matter (e.g., via π-π stacking interaction) was masked by the LMWOAs coating on soil surfaces. Nevertheless, LMWOAs could promote the mobility of both neonicotinoid pesticides at pH 7.0 due to the steric hindrance effect caused by the deposited organic acids and the competitive retention between LMWOAs and pesticides for effective surface deposition sites of soil particles. Furthermore, the extent of the promotion effects of LMWOAs generally followed the order of citric acid > malic acid > acetic acid. This pattern was highly related to their molecular structures (e.g., number and type of functional groups and molecular size). Additionally, when the background solutions contained Ca2+, the bridging effect of cations also contributed to the transport-enhancement effects of LMWOAs. The findings provide valuable information about the mobility behaviors of neonicotinoid pesticides co-existing with LMWOAs in soil-water systems.

Changes in soil microbial communities after exposure to neonicotinoids: A systematic review

Neonicotinoids are a group of nicotine-related chemicals widely used as insecticides in agriculture. Several studies have shown measurable quantities of neonicotinoids in the environment but little is known regarding their impact on soil microbial populations. The purpose of this systematic review was to clarify the effects of neonicotinoids on soil microbiology and to highlight any knowledge gaps. A formal systematic review was performed following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses) guidelines using keywords in PubMed, SCOPUS and Web of Science. This resulted in 29 peer-reviewed articles, whose findings diverged widely because of variable methodologies. Field-based studies were few (28%). Imidacloprid was the most widely used (66%) and soil microbial communities were most sensitive to it. Spray formulations were used in 83% of the studies and seed treatments in the rest. Diversity indices were the most frequently reported soil microbial parameter (62%). About 45% of the studies found that neonicotinoids had adverse impacts on soil microbial community structure, composition, diversity, functioning, enzymatic activity and nitrogen transformation. Interactions with soil physicochemical properties were poorly addressed in all studies. The need for more research, particularly field-based research on the effects of neonicotinoids on soil microorganisms was highlighted by this review.

Occurrence and ecological risks of flonicamid and its metabolites in multiple substrates from intensive rice-vegetable rotations in tropical China

Rice-vegetable rotations are dominant in (sub)-tropical agriculture worldwide. However, fate and risks of the insecticide flonicamid (FLO) and its main degradates (collectively called FLOMs) in multiple substrates from those cropping systems remain largely unknown. In this study, we characterized residual concentrations, driving factors, transport, and potential ecological risks of FLOMs in different substrates in 28 tropical rice-vegetable rotations. Concentrations (median) of FLOMs were 0.013-3.03 (0.42) ng g-1 in plants, 0.012-1.92 (0.23) ng g-1 in soil, 0.029-0.63 (0.126) μg L-1 in water, and 0.002-0.398 (0.055) ng g-1 in sediments. Flonicamid and its metabolite N-(4-trifluoromethylnicotinoyl) glycine were the dominant species in the four substrates (84.1 % to 88.5 %). Plants had the highest levels of FLOMs, with the highest bioconcentration factor in peppers. According to boosted regression trees coupled with a partial least squares structural equation model, levels and composition of FLOMs showed high spatiotemporal and crop-related patterns in different substrates, with patterns highly codetermined by agricultural practices (e.g., crop type and FLO/neonicotinoid/pyrethroid applications), substrate parameters (e.g., pH, organic matter or total organic carbon), and climate features (e.g., wet/dry seasons). Moreover, a fugacity method indicated differences in transport and partitioning patterns in different substrates during rice and vegetable planting periods. Integrated substrate risk assessment of FLOMs contamination was conducted based on species-sensitive distributions and substrate weight index. Although overall risks of FLOM contamination in tropical rice-vegetable rotations were negligible to low, the highest risks were in soils, vegetable planting periods, and a central intensively planted area.

Effects of the termination of LC30 imidacloprid stress on the multigeneration adaptive strategies of Aphis glycines population

Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a major soybean pest that often poses a serious threat to soybean production. Imidacloprid is one of the commonly used insecticides to control the soybean aphid. To investigate the effect of termination of imidacloprid stress on the adaptive strategies of soybean aphid populations, we studied the growth, development, and related metabolism changes when the stress was terminated after 24 generations of imidacloprid stress on A. glycines. The results show that the A. glycines population accelerated its recovery and expanded its population size across generations. The longevity of the adults of the recovering population in the F12, F18, and F24 generations, respectively, was 1.11, 1.15, and 1.11 times longer than the control, while the fecundity was 10.38%, 11.74%, and 11.61% higher than that of the control. The net reproductive rate (R 0) of the recovering population was always significantly higher than that of the control in the F1 to F24 generations. In addition, metabolisms related to the regulation of cell proliferation and oocyte meiosis were significantly upregulated in the recovering population. Even when the imidacloprid pressure disappeared, intergenerational stimuli still affected the adaptive strategies of soybean aphid populations. This effect was manifested as inhibiting the growth and development of the soybean aphid in the early generations and improving the fecundity of the soybean aphid in the later generations. Adaptive soybean aphid populations would surge in the absence of imidacloprid pressure. This study provides an important reference for exploring the adaptability of the A. glycines population under termination of stress from low lethal concentrations of imidacloprid across generations. It also provides important data for monitoring the population dynamics of A. glycines in the field and analyzing the degree of pharmacodynamic stress.

Those That Remain: Sorption/Desorption Behaviour and Kinetics of the Neonicotinoids Still in Use

In January 2023, the derogation loophole was closed on “emergency authorisations” for the use of three out of five neonicotinoids in all EU states. In this study, we analysed the sorption/desorption behaviour and kinetic parameters of acetamiprid and thiacloprid, the two neonicotinoids that are still approved for use, either regularly or under emergency authorisations in the EU, and widely used worldwide. Sorption and desorption curves in four soils with different organic matter content were analysed using four kinetic models, namely, Lagergren’s pseudo first-order model, two-site model (TSM), Weber–Morris intraparticle diffusion model and Elovich’s model. Kinetic parameters were correlated to soil physico-chemical characteristics. To determine the mutual influence of soil characteristics and sorption/desorption parameters in the analysed soils, a factor analysis based on principal component analysis (PCA) was performed. Even though the two insecticides are very similar in size and chemical structure, the results showed different sorption/desorption kinetics. The model that best fits the experimental data was TSM. Thiacloprid showed a more rapid sorption compared to acetamiprid, and, in all soils, a higher proportion sorbed at equilibrium. Intra-particle diffusion seemed to be a relevant process in acetamiprid sorption, but not for thiacloprid. Desorption results showed that acetamiprid is more easily and more thoroughly desorbed than thiacloprid, in all soils. The kinetic behaviour differences stem from variations in molecular structure, causing disparate water solubility, lipophilicity, and acid–base properties.

Design of hydroxyl-functionalized nanoporous organic polymer with tunable hydrophilic-hydrophobic surface for solid phase extraction of neonicotinoid insecticides

As being widely used insecticides, neonicotinoid residues are toxic and harmful to human health and aquatic ecosystems. Thus, the sensitive monitoring of neonicotinoids in water and food samples is highly desirable to reduce their risks to humans. Herein, four novel hydroxyl-functionalized nanoporous organic frameworks (OH-NOP1, OH-NOP2, OH-NOP3 and OH-NOP4) with tunable hydrophilic-hydrophobic surface have been designed and fabricated for the first time by employing luteolin as monomer and 4,4'-bis(chloromethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl as crosslinker at the molar ratio of 3:1, 1:1, 1:3 and 1:6, respectively. When the molar ratio of luteolin to crosslinker was 1:3, OH-NOP3 was obtained and it presented the highest affinity with excellent adsorption performance towards the studied neonicotinoids. The adsorption mechanism was proposed to be the strong hydrogen bond, polar interaction, Lewis acid-base interaction and pore adsorption between OH-NOP3 and neonicotinoids. Then, utilizing OH-NOP3 as sorbent for solid phase extraction cartridges, an effective method for extraction and preconcentration of neonicotinoids followed by high performance liquid chromatography analysis has been developed for quantitative detection of neonicotinoids from water and edible fungi. The method provided good linearity over the range of 0.06-100.0 ng mL^-1 for lake water, 1.5-100.0 ng g^-1 for pleurotus eryngii and sea-shroom. Low detection limit (at the signal to noise ratio of 3) was achieved in the range of 0.02-0.08 ng mL^-1 for water, 0.50-0.60 ng g^-1 for pleurotus eryngii and 0.50-0.80 ng g^-1 for sea-shroom, while the limit of quantification was 0.06-0.25 ng mL^-1, 1.50-1.80 ng g^-1 and 1.50-2.50 ng g^-1, respectively. Satisfactory method recoveries (85.1-112%) were obtained, with relative standard deviations below 8.2%. This study offered a new strategy for designing efficient sorbents to adsorb or remove organic pollutants based on the structure and properties of substrates.

Neonicotinoids in draining micro-watersheds dominated by rice-vegetable rotations in tropical China: Multimedia occurrence, influencing factors, transport, and associated ecological risks

Multimedia contamination by neonicotinoid (NEO) residues has attracted global attention. However, data regarding the multimedia polluted status under certain typical cropping scenarios and the associated risks are scarce. Here, the multimedia occurrence, spatiotemporal distribution, driving factors, transport, and ecological risks of NEOs from tropical rice-vegetable rotation fields were characterized. The heavy NEOs resided in multiple media, and imidacloprid and acetamiprid were the prevailing NEOs, with concentration contributions of 65-80%. The pollution levels of the NEOs, rather than their compositions, exhibited significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity and were highly correlated with the collective (agricultural practices and climate conditions) and differential (e.g., media properties) factors identified using an auto linear regression model. Furthermore, the multimedia transport of NEOs was largely similar but non-negligibly different during the rainy and dry seasons. A new multimedia ecological risk assessment revealed that 50.6% sites were at high risk, and the risk hotspots occurred in the central areas and the winter planting period. The risks were largely contributed by imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, indicating that there were non-ignorable ecological risks. Our results highlight the differential pollution patterns (distribution, transport, and driving factors) of the prevailing NEOs under tropical agricultural scenarios, and the fact that special attention should be paid to the risks posed by NEOs.

Adsorption and degradation of neonicotinoid insecticides in agricultural soils

The adsorption and degradation of seven commercially available neonicotinoid insecticides in four types of agricultural soils from three states (Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee) in the USA were studied. The adsorptions of all the neonicotinoids fit a linear isotherm. The adsorption distribution coefficients (K_d) were found to be below 2.0 L/kg for all the neonicotinoids in all the soils from Mississippi and Arkansas. Only in the Tennessee soil samples, the K_d ranged from 0.96 to 4.21 L/kg. These low values indicate a low affinity and high mobility of these insecticides in the soils. The soil organic carbon-water partitioning coefficient K_oc ranged from 349 to 2569 L/kg. These K_d values showed strong positive correlations with organic carbon content of the soils. The calculated Gibbs energy change (ΔG) of these insecticides in all the soils ranged from - 14.6 to - 19.5 kJ/mol, indicating that physical process was dominant in the adsorptions. The degradations of all these neonicotinoids in the soils followed a first-order kinetics with half-lives ranging from 33 to 305 days. The order of the insecticides with decreasing degradation rate is as follows: clothianidin > thiamethoxam > imidacloprid > acetamiprid > dinotefuran > thiacloprid > nitenpyram. The moisture content, clay content, and cation exchange capacity showed positive effects on the degradation rate of all the neonicotinoids. The Groundwater Ubiquity Score (GUS) calculated from the adsorption distribution coefficient, organic content, and half-life indicates that, except for thiacloprid, all the neonicotinoids in all the soils are possible leachers, having potentials to permeate into and through groundwater zones.

The use of sewage sludge as remediation for imidacloprid toxicity in soils

This study investigated the influence of the sewage sludge (SS) soil amendment on the chronic toxicity of imidacloprid (through the seed dressing formulation MUCH 600 FS®-600 g active ingredient L^-1) to collembolans Folsomia candida. Individuals 10-12 days old were exposed to two contrasting tropical soils (Oxisol and Entisol) amended with SS doses (0, 20, 40, 80, 160, and 320 g SS kg^-1 soil; the SS doses have low intrinsic toxicity, which was checked before its application) in a full factorial combination with five imidacloprid concentrations (varying from 0.25 to 4 mg kg^-1 in Oxisol and 0.03-0.5 mg kg^-1 in Entisol) plus a control. None of the SS doses (without imidacloprid) in both soils reduced the number of generated juvenile collembolans. The imidacloprid concentrations reducing the collembolan reproduction in 50% (EC₅₀) in Oxisol and Entisol without SS were 0.49 and 0.08 mg kg^-1, respectively. However, the EC₅₀ values generally increased with increasing SS doses in soils, varying from 1.03 to 1.41 in Oxisol and 0.07 to 0.21 in Entisol. The SS-amended soils showed 2.1- to 2.9-fold lower imidacloprid toxicity (EC₅₀-based) in Oxisol and 1.8- to 2.7-fold lower toxicity in Entisol. Our results suggest the most effective SS doses alleviating the imidacloprid toxicity (EC₅₀-based) to collembolans are 20 g kg^-1 in Oxisol and 80 g kg^-1 in Entisol. These results indicate that the tested SS has the potential to be employed as a soil amendment agent by reducing the toxicity of imidacloprid to the reproduction of F. candida.

Response of microbial community to the remediation of neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid contaminated wetland soil by Phanerochaete chrysosporium

Imidacloprid (IMI), a typic neonicotinoid insecticide, is widely used and persist in soils with long half-time causing serious threat to ecosystem and human health. It is urgent to develop suitable and effective methods to accelerate it degradation and alleviate its negative impacts in soil. In this study, the introduction of functional microbe white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium to remediate IMI contaminated wetland soil was carried out. The remediation performance and the response of the soil microbial community were examined. The results showed that P. chrysosporium could improve the degradation of IMI in soil no matter the soil was sterilized or not. The bioaugmentation was especially observed in non-sterilized soil under the inoculation patterns of FE and SP with the maximum IMI degradation rate of 91% and 93% in 7 days, respectively. The invertase activity in soil was also enhanced with P. chrysosporium inoculation. Microbial community analysis revealed that P. chrysosporium inoculation could increase the diversity and richness of bacterial community, and stimulate some IMI degraders genera including Ochrobactrum, Leifsonia, Achromobacter, and Bacillus. Moreover, the xenobiotic degradation and metabolism pathway was generally enhanced with P. chrysosporium inoculation based on PICRUSt analysis. These obtained results demonstrated that the introduction of white-rot fungus is of great potentially enabling the remediation of neonicotinoids contaminated soil.

Toxicity of the neonicotinoid insecticides thiamethoxam and imidacloprid to tadpoles of three species of South American amphibians and effects of thiamethoxam on the metamorphosis of Rhinella arenarum

The present study examined the acute and chronic toxicity of the neonicotinoid insecticides imidacloprid (IMI) and thiamethoxam (TIA) on the neotropical amphibian species Rhinella arenarum, Rhinella fernandezae and Scinax granulatus. The median lethal concentration after 96 hr exposure (96 hr-LC₅₀) ranged between 11.28 and >71.2 mg/L amongst all species and development stages tested, indicating that these pesticides are not likely to produce acute toxicity in the wild. The subchronic toxicity was also low, with 21 day-LC₅₀ values ranging between 27.15 and >71.2 mg/L. However, tadpoles of Rhinella arenarum exposed to thiamethoxam from stage 27 until completion of metamorphosis presented a significantly lower metamorphic success rate together with a smaller size at metamorphosis, starting from the lowest concentration tested. Although a number of studies previously examined the effects of neonicotinoids on amphibian tadpoles, these investigations focused on the time to metamorphosis and reported a variety of results including retardation, acceleration or lack of effect. Here, data demonstrated that thiamethoxam predominantly impacts metamorphosis through reduction of the transformation success and body weight, rather than by affecting the timings of metamorphosis. By closely monitoring progression of tadpoles through the different stages, impairment of metamorphosis was demonstrated to occur during the transition from stage 39 to 42, suggesting an effect on the thyroid system. An asymmetry in the length of the arms was also observed in metamorphs treated with thiamethoxam. Overall, these results indicate that thiamethoxam, and conceivably other neonicotinoids, have the potential to significantly impair metamorphosis of amphibians and diminish their performance and survival in the wild.

The Role of Vitamin C: From Prevention of Pneumonia to Treatment of Covid-19

Vitamins are the main components of our diet. In our nutrition 14 vitamins are present namely A, B1 (Thiamine), B6(Pyridoxine), B12(Cyanocobalamin), C, D, E, K, niacin, folacin, choline, pantothenic acid and biotin. The main role of it is in treating common diseases like cold. Vitamin C's role in treating pneumonia or Sepsis /Septicemia has been underway for many decades. A great benefit in decreasing the duration of cold is by injecting heavy dose of ascorbic acid. So, at high dose/ risk of injection like it may be obese, diabetes, and the elderly. Vitamin C always acts as an antioxidant that can help to prevent our cells from getting any harm. Recently injection of vitamin C was used in treatment of Covid-19 patients. In this review we have primarily discussed its effects on the immune system and the treatment of pneumonia disorders using vitamin C. At the beginning we have discussed the bio-avalibility of vitamin-C followed by the synthesis of it by plants and animals and then the dietary allowance to be followed for vitamin C regularly. The level of vitamin C is very low in people having pneumonia and those with low immunity are being effected by COVID-19 virus. Kiwi is the main source of vitamin C. Preliminary observational studies show that critically sick individuals use vitamin C for the prevention of the pneumonia to the treatment of the virus COVID-19 by increasing the vitamin C levels in the body.

The effects of acetamiprid multigeneration stress on metabolism and physiology of Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a major soybean pest that often poses a serious threat to soybean production. In this study, we checked the effects of acetamiprid on redox, energy metabolism, and hormone expression in A. glycines. The LC50 and LC30 of acetamiprid were used to treat the fourth instar nymphs in each generation from F0 to F4 to measure the activity of peroxidase, pyruvate kinase, and trehalase using a microassays approach. The peroxidase activity was significantly higher than control when treated with the LC30 of acetamiprid in F2-F5 generations. The activity of pyruvate kinase was significantly higher, while trehalase activity was substantially lower than control in each generation. Besides, we monitored molting and juvenile hormone expression in soybean aphids using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The juvenile hormone titer of third instar nymphs was significantly higher in the treatment group (F1, F2, F4, and F5), while no effects were noted in the F3 generation. Taken together, the activity of peroxidase and pyruvate kinase in soybean aphid first increased to the peak and then decreased, while the trehalase activity continuously decreased in all generations following exposure to acetamiprid. The juvenile hormone titer was significantly higher, while the molting hormone titer was significantly lower in LC50 -treated aphids than in control. Moreover, the LC30 of acetamiprid increased the molting hormone expression in soybean aphids. These findings indicated a baseline for the effective use of acetamiprid in controlling soybean aphids.

Emerging Contaminant Imidacloprid in Mediterranean Soils: The Risk of Accumulation Is Greater than the Risk of Leaching

Imidacloprid (IMI) is an extensively used neonicotinoid insecticide whose occurrence in the environment is a worldwide problem. Its sorption/transport properties are recognized as one of the key knowledge gaps hindering policymaking regarding its international routine monitoring in soils. Therefore, we studied IMI transport behaviour in Croatian Mediterranean soils using column experiments. Breakthrough curves were analysed using the two-site adsorption model and compared against dimethoate (DIM). Transport parameters were correlated to soil physicochemical properties. The results indicate that IMI shows a high degree of preference for soil organic matter over any other soil constituent. For IMI, the clay did not exhibit any sorption activity, while hematite did act as an active sorbent. Contrarily, hematite increased the leachability of DIM by blocking the active sorption sites on clay platelets. Both hematite and clay sorption acted as type-2 (i.e., rate-limiting) sites. In all soils, IMI exhibited lower short-term leachability than DIM. Combined with a body of data concerning other aspects of IMI environmental behaviour, the results indicate that the risk of accumulation of IMI in the soil is greater than the risk of contamination by leaching. Thus, continuous monitoring of IMI in soils should be incorporated into future soil health protection programs.

High spatial resolved cropland coverage and cultivation category determine neonicotinoid distribution in agricultural soil at the provincial scale

Croplands are experiencing increasing neonicotinoid pollution and ecological health problems, which are especially widely applied in China. However, the large regional scale distribution of neonicotinoids and the key factors have seldom been determined. We show that the total residual concentration of neonicotinoids ranged from 13.4 to 157 ng/g with an average level of 75.8 ng/g and imidacloprid which was the dominant compound ranged from 10.4 to 81.3 ng/g during 2017-2021 in the Yangtze River Delta, China. In comparison, the neonicotinoid residues detected here were mostly higher than those in other regions. We further show that the 1-km spatial resolution cropland coverage (78.0%) and crop type (18.1%) predominantly contributed to the large spatial variation of neonicotinoids after adjusting for the factors including temperature, soil pH, soil moisture, and precipitation via automatic linear regression modeling at the provincial scale. Additional analyses revealed that tea croplands had significantly lowest concentration and fruit fields had the highest level due to the different application methods. Our findings provide new insight into key factors quantifying the high spatial resolved distribution of neonicotinoids and urgently call for reasonable application methods against rapidly growing ecology threats from neonicotinoid pollution in China.

Effects of Acetamiprid at Low and Median Lethal Concentrations on the Development and Reproduction of the Soybean Aphid Aphis glycines

The soybean aphid Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a major pest of soybean and poses a serious threat to soybean production. Studies on the effect of acetamiprid on the life table parameters of A. glycines, provide important information for the effective management of this pest. We found that exposure to acetamiprid at LC50 significantly extended the mean generation time, adult pre-reproductive period, and total pre-reproduction period compared with the control, whereas exposure to acetamiprid at LC30 significantly shortened these periods. Exposure to acetamiprid at both LC30 and LC50 significantly decreased the fecundity of the female adult, net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of increase, and finite rate of increase compared with the control. The probability of attaining the adult stage was 0.51, 0.38, and 0.86 for a newly born nymph from the LC30 acetamiprid treatment group, LC50 acetamiprid treatment group, and control group, respectively. Acetamiprid at both LC50 and LC30 exerted stress effects on A. glycines, with the LC50 treatment significantly decreased the growth rate compared with the LC30 treatment. The present study provides reference data that could facilitate the exploration of the effects of acetamiprid on A. glycines in the field.

Dynamics in imidacloprid sorption related to changes of soil organic matter content and quality along a 20-year cultivation chronosequence of citrus orchards

The on-going and extensive use of neonicotinoids occur in orchards. However, it is still unknown whether and how orchard management affects soil properties, especially the contents and structure of soil organic matter during orchard development, and their further influences on neonicotinoid persistence. Here, surface soil samples were collected from the citrus orchards with different cultivation ages (1, 10, 14, and 20 years), and their physicochemical properties were determined. Changes in the chemical structure of soil organic matter (SOM) were furtherly examined using solid-state CP/TOSS ¹³C NMR. Then, the sorption isotherms of imidacloprid in these soils were investigated. The sorption coefficient (K_d) of imidacloprid at C_e of 0.05 mg/L in the orchard soils increased by 19.4-23.3%, along a 20-year chronosequence of cultivation, which should be mainly ascribed to the increase of SOM. However, the organic carbon-normalized sorption coefficient (K_oc, sorption per unit mass of OM) of imidacloprid declined with increasing cultivation ages. Moreover, the polar and aliphatic domains of SOM had a significantly positive relation to the K_oc of imidacloprid, suggesting its key role in governing imidacloprid sorption. The results highlighted that reasonable management measures could be adopted to control the occurrence and fate of neonicotinoids in soils, mainly by affecting the content and quality of SOM.

BDD electrochemical oxidation of neonicotinoid pesticides in natural surface waters. Operational, kinetic and energetic aspects

Neonicotinoids pesticides were introduced to the market in the 1990s to control various pests. Its accumulation in the environment supposes a severe problem that can affect human health. This study investigates the electrochemical degradation of four common neonicotinoid pesticides; thiamethoxam (TMX), imidacloprid (ICP), acetamiprid (ACP) and thiacloprid (TCP), in different natural surface waters by a boron-doped diamond anode (BDD). The most influencing variable was the current density (j), and to a lesser extent, the supporting electrolyte concentration (C_e). In optimal conditions (j = 34.14 mA cm^-2 and C_e = 10.00 mM, using Na₂SO₄ as electrolyte) pesticide removals for TMX, ICP, ACP and TCP were 97.2, 96.9, 87.8 and 98.2 %, respectively. The obtained results with different support electrolytes (Na₂SO₄, NaCl, NaNO₃ and HK₂PO₄) suggest that sulphate electrolyte was the optimum for TMX, ICP and ACP. However, for TCP, a total removal was achieved in less than 10 min using NaCl. It was also verified that the initial pH of the solution did not significantly influence the process in the range 3-9. All these results were rationalized in this paper. Finally, to evaluate the matrix influence, some experiments were carried out in different natural surface water matrices (river, reservoir and two different WWTP effluents). The factors influencing the process were the conductivity of the solution and the organic matter content. It was noticeable that the specific energy consumption (SEC) reduced by approximately 15 % for river water and WWTP effluent. High mineralization rates were obtained for all water matrices, with TOC removals ranging between 60 and 80 %.

Comparison of neonicotinoid residues in soils of different land use types

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) have attracted particular attention in recent years due to their wide occurrence and potential impacts on the ecosystem and human health. This study aimed to compare the composition and level of NEOs in soils of different land use types. Two rounds of sampling were performed in Tianjin, China, with 158 soil samples in fall and 61 soil samples in spring collected from five types of land, i.e., greenhouse, orchard, farm, park and residential area. The concentrations of eight NEOs, i.e., imidacloprid (IMI), acetamiprid (ACE), thiamethoxam (THX), clothianidin (CLO), thiacloprid (THA), dinotefuran (DIN), nitenpyram (NIT) and flonicamid (FLO), were analyzed in the soil samples using LC-MS/MS. Six NEOs were detected, with IMI, ACE and THX being the most frequently detected ones. Concentrations of NEOs (arithmetic means in fall and spring, respectively) in greenhouse were the highest (2.52×10² and 4.59×10² ng g^-1), followed by in orchard (35.1 and 1.31×10² ng g^-1), park (50.4 and 1.02×10² ng g^-1), residential area (20.2 and 1.38×10² ng g^-1) and farm (25.5 and 84.2 ng g^-1). The contribution of individual NEO varied in soils of different land use types. Both IMI and THX were largely used in greenhouse, while IMI was the main NEO in the other four lands. The NEO levels in soils planted with different crops varied greatly. Extremely high levels of NEOs (>10³ ng g^-1) were observed in soils planted with watermelon, tomato and peach in greenhouse. The ubiquitous presence of NEOs in soils deserves more attention, particularly in greenhouse.
