Abstract
Fruits native to South America have been recognized for their relevant levels of phytochemicals with bioactivities that offer human health benefits beyond nutrition; however, many of them remain unexplored. The objective of this study was to compile the recent literature regarding the phytochemical profiles and biological properties of fruits native to South America. Over 600 fruits were analyzed, and those with the most substantial scientific literature regarding their phytochemical profiles and antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities were selected. Based on the reviewed literature, 40 selected fruits were analyzed, and antioxidant activity was reported for 38 fruits, antimicrobial activity for 31, and anti-inflammatory activity for 30. This data allowed for a comparative analysis of the bioactive potential of these fruits. However, factors like extraction methods, harvest time and location, and cultivar variations were found to have significant impacts on fruit bioactivity. Common limitations in properly investigating the phytochemical composition of fruits grown in the wild include lack of access to sufficient materials, lack of reproducibility of results owing to variations in chemical composition, and inability to use accurate techniques, such as mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. Clinical trials should be encouraged to confirm the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of fruits observed in vitro. Furthermore, extract refinement prior to antimicrobial analysis remains challenging to obtain reliable results. This review provides helpful information to guide further studies on these fruits and strategic public policies concerning the development of sustainable supply chains to preserve the biodiversity of South America.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Diarrhea is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates in developing countries and is ranked the second leading cause of infant mortality worldwide. Psidium cattleianum Sabine leaves have been traditionally used as an anti-diarrheal remedy, however, no scientific study has thoroughly investigated its anti-diarrheal potential. AIM OF THE STUDY To unravel the polyphenolic profile and explore the antidiarrheal potential of the defatted aqueous methanol extract (DAME) of Psidium cattleianum Sabine aerial parts through in vivo and in vitro experiments, alongside an inclusive in-silico analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The major polyphenolic compounds were purified and identified using chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. The antidiarrheal activity was assessed using castor oil-induced diarrhea, gastrointestinal motility test, and castor oil-induced enteropooling in vivo models. Bacterial strains associated with diarrhea were used for the in vitro study. Molecular docking was investigated using Autodock Vina and OpenBabel tools. Moreover molecular dynamics study was performed using GROMACS, PyMOL and Bio3D package in R Studio. RESULTS Twelve polyphenols were isolated for the first time from the aerial parts of the Egyptian Psidium cattleianum Sabine and identified as; castalagin (1), rutin (2), kaempferol 3-O-β-D-rutinoside (3), guaijaverin (4), avicularin (5), quercetin 3-O-β-(3'-O-galloylxylopyranoside (6), verbascoside (7), quercetrin (8), gallic acid (9), methyl gallate (10), quercetin (11) and kaempferol (12). DAME (200, 400, and 800 mg/kg) significantly delayed the diarrheal onset by 1.5, 1.8, and 2.3 folds, respectively. The diarrheal inhibition percentage was 63.47, 82.69, and 92.31, respectively. The content of intestinal transit decreased by 27.38 %, 45.11 %, and 50.06 %. The Antidiarrheal index was 43.28, 66.74, and 84.22. E. coli, S. enterica, L. monocytogenes, and S. aureus demonstrated sensitivity to DAME, exhibiting inhibition zones (IZ) ranging from 10 to 25 mm. The docking conclusion shows that all identified polyphenols bind to the Kappa Opioid Receptor (KOR) and Beta-ketoacyl-acyl carrier protein synthase III (FabH), with promising results that confirm the credibility of the biological findings. Then, we selected the top-ranked phytocompounds verbascoside (7) based on their highest binding affinity scores for KOR and FabH -10.33 and -8.91 (Kcal/mol), respectively. Furthermore, 200 ns MD simulations performed on the KOR and FabH ligand-protein complexes, computed RMSD, RMSF, RG, PCA, DCCM, and free energy landscape (FEL), revealed stable conformations of the ligand-protein interactions throughout the simulations. These findings support that DAME is a promising alternative for managing diarrheal and bacterial infections related to gastrointestinal disorders. Our future direction is to formulate the extract in a suitable dosage form and implement clinical studies, while scaling up the in silico active phenolics for detailed mechanistic study is a promising approach.

Abstract
Depression is a highly prevalent neuropsychiatric disorder worldwide. One currently accepted hypothesis of this pathogenesis is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction, which involves oxidative stress and brain damage. Therefore, antioxidants, such as phenolic compounds, could be used in depression. In this study, we investigated the antidepressant-like and antioxidant effects of an aqueous extract of the leaves of three species of the genus Psidium, Myrtaceae family, in mice. The exotic Psidium guajava L. and the natives Psidium guineense Sw. and Psidium cattleianum Sabine (10, 1, and 0.1 mg/kg, respectively) and fluoxetine (10 mg/kg) were administered orally (p. o.) once daily for 21 days, with or without corticosterone (20 mg/kg). After behavioral assessments (tail suspension, splash, and open-field tests), the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, liver, kidneys, and plasma were examined to determine the oxidative stress status. The three extracts and fluoxetine treatment decreased the immobility time and counteracted the oxidative stress induced by corticosterone administration. The phenolic compounds identified as major components of the extracts, quercetin in P. guajava and P. guineense and o-coumaric acid in P. cattleianum, may be involved in the biological activities. Therefore, the aqueous leaf extracts of P. guajava, P. cattleianum, and P. guineense could be potential antidepressants helpful in treating depression and other diseases with elevated nitro-oxidative stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The development of analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs plays a crucial role in modern medicine, aiming to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation in patients. Opioids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are groups of drugs conventionally used to treat pain and inflammation, but a wide range of adverse effects and ineffectiveness in some pathological conditions leads us to search for new drugs with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. OBJECTIVES In this regard, the authors intend to investigate the ((2s,6s)-6-ethyl-tetrahydro-2h-pyran- 2-yl) methanol compound (LS20) on pain and acute inflammation. METHODS Male Swiss mice were evaluated using acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing, formalin, and tail-flick as models of nociceptive evaluation and edema paw, air pouch and cell culture as models of inflammatory evaluation besides the rotarod test for assessment of motor impairment. RESULTS The compound showed an effect on the acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing, formalin and tail-flick tests. Studying the mechanism of action, reversion of the antinociceptive effect of the compound was observed from previous intraperitoneal administration of selective and non-selective opioid antagonists on the tail flick test. In addition, the compound induced an antiedematogenic effect and reduced leukocyte migration and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the air pouch model. LS20 was able to maintain cell viability, in addition to reducing cell production of TNF-α and IL-6. CONCLUSION In summary, the LS20 compound presented an antinociceptive effect, demonstrating the participation of the opioid system and an anti-inflammatory effect related to the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine production. The compound also demonstrated safety at the cellular level.

Abstract
Araçá is a native Brazil fruit, and has two morphological types, yellow and red; however, it is still little consumed by the population. Although there are few studies on the araçá fruit, some phytochemical propriety benefits have been described for this plant, such as antioxidant effects. To explore the benefits of araçá fruit, the physicochemical characteristics and in vitro toxicological effects of red and yellow araçá fruit were evaluated. In this work, the toxicity of araçá extracts in NIH/3T3 cell lines, the antiproliferative effects in cancer cell lines (C6, HT-29, and DU149), and the overall antifungal effects were evaluated. The irritant potential of araçá extracts was assessed by the HET-CAM test. The results demonstrated that the fruits are rich in fiber content and showed high phenols content. In addition, the araçá extracts had no present toxicity effects in cell lines; however, the red araçá extracts showed antiproliferative effects in HT-29 cancer cells at 50 mg/mL. The antifungal effects of araçá extract were promising in 23 isolates of Candida spp., and both araçá extracts showed no irritant effects. Therefore, this study demonstrated that red and yellow araçá fruit extract has promising biological and pharmacological effects that should be further explored.

Abstract
Psidium guajava (Guava tree) is one of the most widely known species in the family Myrtaceae. The Guava tree has been reported for its potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic activities. In the current study, the chemical compositions of the n-hexane extract and the essential oil of P. guajava were investigated using the GC/MS analysis, along with an evaluation of their antioxidant potential, and an investigation into the enzyme inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BchE), tyrosinase, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase. Moreover, molecular docking of the major identified active sites of the target enzymes were investigated. The chemical characterization of the n-hexane extract and essential oil revealed that squalene (9.76%), α-tocopherol (8.53%), and γ-sitosterol (3.90%) are the major compounds in the n-hexane extract. In contrast, the major constituents of the essential oil are D-limonene (36.68%) and viridiflorol (9.68%). The n-hexane extract showed more antioxidant potential in the cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), the ferric reducing power (FRAP), and the metal chelating ability (MCA) assays, equivalent to 70.80 ± 1.46 mg TE/g, 26.01 ± 0.97 mg TE/g, and 24.83 ± 0.35 mg EDTAE/g, respectively. In the phosphomolybdenum (PM) assay, the essential oil showed more antioxidant activity equivalent to 2.58 ± 0.14 mmol TE/g. The essential oil demonstrated a potent BChE and tyrosinase inhibitory ability at 6.85 ± 0.03 mg GALAE/g and 61.70 ± 3.21 mg KAE/g, respectively. The α-amylase, and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of the n-hexane extract and the essential oil varied from 0.52 to 1.49 mmol ACAE/g. Additionally, the molecular docking study revealed that the major compounds achieved acceptable binding scores upon docking with the tested enzymes. Consequently, the P. guajava n-hexane extract and oil can be used as a promising candidate for the development of novel treatment strategies for oxidative stress, neurodegeneration, and diabetes mellitus diseases.

Abstract
Cerrado has many compounds that have been used as biopesticides, herbicides, medicines, and others due to their highly toxic potential. Thus, this review aims to present information about the toxicity of Cerrado plants. For this purpose, a review was performed using PubMed, Science Direct, and Web Of Science databases. After applying exclusion criteria, 187 articles published in the last 20 years were selected and analyzed. Detailed information about the extract preparation, part of the plant used, dose/concentration tested, model system, and employed assay was provided for different toxic activities described in the literature, namely cytotoxic, genotoxic, mutagenic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, insecticidal, antiparasitic, and molluscicidal activities. In addition, the steps to execute research on plant toxicity and the more common methods employed were discussed. This review synthesized and organized the available research on the toxic effects of Cerrado plants, which could contribute to the future design of new environmentally safe products.

Abstract
The Myrtaceae family is considered one of the largest known botanical families and the genus Psidium is among the most economically interesting. Psidium genus comprises approximately 112 species, and it has been extensively studied, mainly because of Psidium guavaja species. Phytochemical investigations confirmed the presence of phenolics as the main compounds, as well as the essential oils, which were also widely investigated. Pharmacological studies report analgesic, anthelminthic, acaricidal, antihiperglicemic, among other biological activities for different species. The present review covers the relevant literature until 2019 and outlines the current data on chemical composition, preclinical and clinical studies on Psidium species, as well as the main possible mechanisms of action responsible for the described activities. Therefore, it can provide a reference for pharmaceutical research and clinical application of this genus.

Abstract
Pain is a distressing but fundamental manifestation that prepares the body for potentially detrimental stimuli while ensuring its protection. Plant and animal products have traditionally been used to relieve pain for centuries. However, no attempt has been made to compile a single report of plant and animal products possessing analgesic properties. This review enadeavours to recover data from published articles to establish a collective literature review on folk remedies from plant and animal sources used as analgesics and in the treatment of pain-related conditions, identifying gaps in existing knowledge and future works. Relevant information was systematically retrieved using the PRISMA method. In this review, in total, 209 plants were found to be either used raw or prepared by decoctions or maceration. Administration was either oral or topical, and they were predominantly used in Asian countries. In vivo studies of plants with analgesic properties, which were tested using different methods including acetic-induced writhing test, hotplate test, tail-flick test, and formalin-induced pain test, were compiled. Animal products with analgesic properties were obtained mainly from compounds present in venom; their bioactive compounds were also identified. In the literature search, certain gaps were noted, which could be reviewed in future studies. For instance, there was a disparity of information regarding the traditional uses of medicinal plants. In this review, an attempt was made to critically assess and describe the pharmacological properties and bioactive composition of indigenous plants, some animal species, and animal venom by scrutinizing databases and looking for published articles. Therefore, it can be concluded that the compounds obtained from these sources can serve as important ingredients in therapeutic agents to alleviate pain once their limitations are assessed and improved upon. In the literature search, certain gaps were noted, which could be reviewed in future studies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tragia involucrata L. have been utilized as traditional medicine in Indian subcontinent for the treatment of numerous illnesses such as inflammation, pain and skin infection. In this current study we sought to assess the anxiolytic, sedative and analgesic activity of Tragia involucrata L. leaves extract. MATERIALS AND METHODS We first performed a phytochemical screening test of the leaves extracts following standard phytochemical screening protocols. We next examined the anxiolytic and sedative activity of crude methanol (TIME), ethyl acetate (TIEAE) and n-Hexane (TIHE) extract of Tragia involucrata L. leaves using mouse behavioral models such as elevated plus-maze test and pentobarbital-induced sleeping time test, respectively. Likewise, we evaluated the analgesic activity using acetic acid induced writhing test and formalin induced paw licking test. Additionally, we performed a quantitative analysis of heavy metals content of Tragia involucrata L. leaves by overnight digestion in concentrated nitric acid (HNO3). RESULTS Phytochemical screening demonstrated that TIME, TIEAE and TIHE contain flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, phenols, terpenoids and sterols. Administration of these extracts resulted in higher number of open arm entry, lower number of close arm entry and higher time spent in open arm compared to control treatment (p < 0.05). Moreover, these treatments decreased the onset of sleep time and increased the duration of sleep compared to control treated mice (all p < 0.05). Likewise, extracts treated mice exhibited decreased number of writhing as well as lower acute phase and late phase duration compared to control treatment (all p < 0.05). The average level of As and Fe in Tragia involucrata L. leaves was 5.16 ± 0.012 ppm and 2.76 ± 0.015 ppm, respectively. CONCLUSION Results from this study support that Tragia involucrata L. leaves extracts exhibit an anxiolytic, sedative and analgesic activity in mice.

Abstract
Traditionally, in the Southern Asian countries, Psidium cattleyanum is a widely used plant for the management of various ailments such as gastrointestinal, respiratory, and cardiac disorders, but it lacks proof on a scientific basis, and therefore, this is the major emphasis of the current research work. Crude extract of Psidium cattleyanum (Pc.Cr) was preliminary analyzed for the presence of different classes of bioactive molecules. The aqueous and dichloromethane fractions of Pc.Cr were subjected to in vitro and in vivo studies. It was applied at variable concentrations (0.1-10 mg/ml) to isolated rabbit jejunum to investigate spasmolytic effect. Concentration dependent curves of calcium were constructed to check the calcium channel antagonistic activity. For the evaluation of tracheorelaxant activity, isolated tracheal tissue was treated with High-K+ (80 mM) and carbachol (CCh) and then challenged cumulatively with Pc.Cr. To study the antidiarrheal effect of the plant extract, castor oil-induced diarrhea model was adopted. For evaluation of the hypotensive effect of Pc.Cr, it was given intravenously to preanesthetized normotensive rats, and the response was recorded using pressure transducer. Platelet rich plasma was used for the assessment of the antiplatelet activity when challenged with purinergic and adrenergic agonists. Concentration-dependent inhibition of spontaneous and High-K+ mediated contractions in isolated jejunum was observed by the application of Pc.Cr. Contractions induced in isolated tracheal tissue by High-K+ and CCh were inhibited by application of Pc.Cr to these tissues. Similarly, application of Pc.Cr to High-K+ and phenylephrine (PE) treated aortic strips resulted in vasodilation. Platelet aggregation inhibition was shown by Pc.Cr against adenosine diphosphate (ADP) only. The antidiarrheal effect was observed as a reduction in the total number of feces in Pc.Cr-treated mice when given castor oil. Dose-dependent hypotension was seen in normotensive rats when treated with Pc.Cr intravenously. This study showed the spasmolytic, tracheorelaxant, vasodilator, platelet aggregation inhibitory, antidiarrheal, and hypotensive activities of P. cattleyanum which may be due to the blockage of calcium channels, but the involvement of any other pathway cannot be ignored.

Abstract
Chronic pain management has several adverse effects and research looking for new and effective pain management drugs posing lower undesirable effects is necessary. Given the above, the pharmacological investigation of medicinal plants significantly contributes to the dissemination of plant-derived therapeutics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antinociceptive activity of the Psidium brownianum Mart ex DC. leaf essential oil (PBEO) and the participation of the opioid pathway in this effect in mice. Swiss Mus musculus male mice were tested using acute nociception models (acetic acid induced abdominal contortions, formalin, capsaicin and hot plate tests). The possible myorelaxant action of the PBEO was tested using the rotarod test. The essential oil reduced animal nociception in chemical and heat models, with this action being devoid of a myorelaxant effect. Naloxone (2 mg/kg, intraperitoneally - i.p.) partially antagonized the PBEO activity, possibly acting via opioid receptors. The results obtained provide evidence that the traditional Psidium brownianum use may be effective for pain treatment.

Abstract
It is known that the phytochemical identification and assessment of biological effects caused by the constituent species Psidium cattleianum, which belongs to family Myrtaceae, are poorly held in the literature. The aim of the current study is to investigate the composition of secondary metabolites, the toxicity, and the antimicrobial activity of P. cattleianum leaves. The crude ethanolic extract of the plant was obtained through maceration and fractionated with hexane, dichloromethane, and ethyl acetate. The crude ethanol extract and the fractions were subjected to phytochemical screening and tested against the microcrustacean Artemia salina for toxicological assessment. Antimicrobial tests with crude ethanol extract and the fractions were carried out through the agar diffusion method using broth microdilution against Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Burkholderia cepacia, and Escherichia coli strains. A variety of secondary metabolite groups such as catechins, steroids, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and saponins was detected. Regarding toxicity, hexane and dichloromethane fractions were considered nontoxic, whereas the crude ethanol extract and the ethyl acetate fraction showed low toxicity. The crude ethanol extract and the fractions, except for the hexane fraction, showed activity against the tested strains. Therefore, the composition of the secondary metabolites, the low toxicity, and the antimicrobial activity suggest that this species is promising in the search and development of new drugs.

Resumo Introdução A espécie Psidium cattleianum Sabine tem despertado o interesse dos pesquisadores por apresentar, além de atividade cicatrizante, analgésica e antioxidante, propriedades antimicrobianas frente a micro-organismos da mucosa oral que podem atuar como agentes cariogênicos. Objetivo Foi avaliada, neste trabalho, a atividade antimicrobiana de extratos bruto e fracionados das folhas do araçá, além do seu perfil cromatográfico. Material e método Para avaliação da atividade antimicrobiana, foi utilizada a técnica de microdiluição, para determinação da Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM), e repique do inóculo em Ágar Muller Hinton (Himedia), para averiguação da Concentração Bactericida Mínima (CBM). O extrato foi testado nas concentrações entre 10 e 500 µg/mL. O perfil cromatográfico foi realizado pelo método de Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Eficiência (CLAE). Resultado Os resultados obtidos foram submetidos a uma análise descritiva e foi possível observar a atividade inibitória dos extratos do P. cattleianum contra S. mutans e S. oralis. Conclusão A atividade antimicrobiana dos extratos de P. cattleianum contra micro-organismos orais justifica maiores estudos para a utilização medicinal dessa espécie, como, por exemplo, sua utilização em enxaguantes bucais.

Abstract
Leaves of Anacardium humile are used in Brazilian traditional medicine for the treatment of intestinal disturbances and skin lesions. This study aimed to define leaf diagnostic structural characters, to propose a new method of phytochemical analysis of secretions, prospect flavonoids and alkaloids, and to evaluate their inhibitory activity on Candida albicans. Common anatomical, phytochemical, and microbiological methods were used. Leaves of Anacardium occidentale were used as a reference for the structural analyses. The main structural characters were closed vascular system, absence of ducts at the medulla, bilateral mesophyll, absence of bundle sheath extension, and secretory idioblasts at the xylem. The ducts present schizogenous origin, and secreting activity is restricted to the initial phases of leaf blade expansion. The proposed new phytochemical method is practical and inexpensive and has potential for wide application. The abundance of tannins and flavonoids is related to medicinal use. A single peak in high-performance liquid chromatography indicated the presence of a pure substance not previously reported. The extract had a strong inhibitory effect on C. albicans. The obtained results confirm the potential of A. humile for the prospection of new bioactive compounds.

Abstract
CONTEXT Psidium cattleianum Sabine (Myrtacea) is rich in vitamin C and phenolic compounds, including epicatechin and gallic acid as the main components. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the antifungal and antioxidant capacity in vitro of the essential oil of araçá (EOA). The acute toxicity of the EOA also was evaluated in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS The leaves of the P. cattleianum were extracted by steam distillation. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated by in vitro tests [1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS), ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), linoleic acid oxidation, thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS)], and ex vivo analysis [TBARS, δ-aminulevunilate dehydratase (δ-Ala-D) and catalase activity, non-protein thiols (NPSH), and ascorbic acid levels]. The toxicity was studied in mice by a single oral administration of EOA; and the antifungal activity was performed with five strains of fungi. RESULTS The EOA exhibited antioxidant activity in the FRAP assay and reduced lipid peroxidation in the cortex (Imax = 32.90 ± 2.62%), hippocampus (IC50 = 48.00 ± 3.00 µg/ml and Imax = 32.90 ± 2.62%), and cerebellum (Imax = 45.40 ± 14.04%) of mice. Acute administration of the EOA by the oral route did not cause toxicological effects in mice (LD50 > 500 µg/ml). The EOA also showed antifungal activity through of the determination minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 41.67 ± 18.04 to 166.70 ± 72.17 µg/ml for tested strains. CONCLUSION The results of present study indicate that EOA possess antioxidant properties, antifungal and not cause toxicity at tested doses.
