Spectroscopic study on transformations of dissolved organic matter in coal-to-liquids wastewater under integrated chemical oxidation and biological treatment process

Catalytic ozonation of reverse osmosis membrane concentrates by catalytic ozonation: Properties and mechanisms

Ni-Mn@KL ozone catalyst was prepared for the efficient treatment of reverse osmosis membrane concentrates. The working conditions and reaction mechanism of the ozone-catalyzed oxidation by Ni-Mn@KL were systematically studied. Then, a comprehensive CRITIC weighting-coupling coordination evaluation model was established. Ni-Mn@KL was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, BET, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and found to have large specific surface area and homogeneous surface dispersion of striped particles. Under the optimum working conditions with an initial pH of 7.9 (raw water), a reaction height-to-diameter ratio of 10:1, an ozone-aeration intensity of 0.3 L/min, and a catalyst filling rate of 10%, the maximum COD removal rate was 60.5%. Free-radical quenching experiments showed that OH oxidation played a dominant role in the Ni-Mn@KL-catalyzed ozone-oxidation system, and the reaction system conformed to the second-order reaction kinetics law. Ni-Mn@KL catalysts were further confirmed to have good catalytic performance and mechanical performance after repeated utilization. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Ni-Mn@KL catalyst can achieve effective treatment of RO film concentrated liquid. High COD removal rate of RO membrane concentrated liquid was obtained at low cost. Ni-Mn@KL catalyst promotes ozone decomposition to produce ·OH and O2 -· oxidized organic matter. The Ni-Mn@KL catalyst can maintain good stability after repeated use. A CRITIC weight-coupling coordination model was established to evaluate the catalytic ozonation.

PAH bioremediation with Rhodococcus rhodochrous ATCC 21198: Impact of cell immobilization and surfactant use on PAH treatment and post-remediation toxicity

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are prevalent environmental contaminants that are harmful to ecological and human health. Bioremediation is a promising technique for remediating PAHs in the environment, however bioremediation often results in the accumulation of toxic PAH metabolites. The objectives of this research were to demonstrate the cometabolic treatment of a mixture of PAHs by a pure bacterial culture, Rhodococcus rhodochrous ATCC 21198, and investigate PAH metabolites and toxicity. Additionally, the surfactant Tween ® 80 and cell immobilization techniques were used to enhance bioremediation. Total PAH removal ranged from 70-95% for fluorene, 44-89% for phenanthrene, 86-97% for anthracene, and 6.5-78% for pyrene. Maximum removal was achieved with immobilized cells in the presence of Tween ® 80. Investigation of PAH metabolites produced by 21198 revealed a complex mixture of hydroxylated compounds, quinones, and ring-fission products. Toxicity appeared to increase after bioremediation, manifesting as mortality and developmental effects in embryonic zebrafish. 21198's ability to rapidly transform PAHs of a variety of molecular structures and sizes suggests that 21198 can be a valuable microorganism for catalyzing PAH remediation. However, implementing further treatment processes to address toxic PAH metabolites should be pursued to help lower post-remediation toxicity in future studies.

A Comprehensive Review on the Excitation-Emission Matrix Fluorescence Spectroscopic Characterization of Petroleum-Containing Substances: Principles, Methods, and Applications

Petroleum-containing substance (PCS) is a general term used for petroleum and its derivatives. A comprehensive characterization of PCSs is crucial for resource exploitation, economic development and environmental protection. Fluorescence spectroscopy, especially excitation-emission matrix fluorescence (EEMF) spectroscopy, has been proved to be a powerful tool to characterize PCSs since its remarkable sensitivity, selectivity, simplicity and high efficiency. However, there is a lack of systematic review focusing on this field in the literature. This paper reviews the fundamental principles and measurements of EEMF for characterizing PCSs, and makes a systematic introduction to various information mining methods including basic peak information extraction, spectral parameterization and some commonly used chemometric methods. In addition, recent advances in applying EEMF to characterize PCSs during the whole life-cycle process of petroleum are also revisited. Furthermore, the current limitations of EEMF in the measurement and characterization of PCSs are discussed and corresponding solutions are provided. For promoting the future development of this field, the urgent need to build a relatively complete EEMF fingerprint library to trace PCSs, not only pollutants but also crude oil and petroleum products, is proposed. Finally, the extensions of EEMF to high-dimensional chemometrics and deep learning are prospected, with the expectation of solving more complex systems and problems.

Fluorescent spectroscopy paired with parallel factor analysis for quantitative monitoring of phenanthrene biodegradation and metabolite formation

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of environmental contaminants released into the environment from both natural and anthropogenic sources that are associated with carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic health effects. Many remediation strategies for the treatment of PAH contaminated material, including bioremediation, can lead to the formation of toxic transformation products. Analytical techniques for PAHs and PAH transformation products often require extensive sample preparation including solvent extraction and concentration, chromatographic separation, and mass spectrometry to identify and quantify compounds of interest. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescent spectroscopy paired with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) is an approach for analyzing PAHs that eliminates the need for extensive sample preparation and separation techniques before analysis. However, this technique has rarely been applied to monitoring PAH biotransformation and formation of PAH metabolites. The objectives of this research were to compare an established targeted analytical method to two-dimensional fluorescent spectroscopy and combined EEM-PARAFAC methods to monitor phenanthrene degradation by a bacterial pure culture, Mycobacterium Strain ELW1, identify and quantify phenanthrene transformation products, and derive kinetic constants for phenanthrene degradation and metabolite formation. Both phenanthrene and its primary transformation product, trans-9,10-dihydroxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene, were identified and quantified with the EEM-PARAFAC method. The value of the EEM-PARAFAC method was demonstrated in the superiority of sensitivity and accuracy of quantification to two-dimensional fluorescent spectroscopy. Quantification of targets and derivation of kinetic constants using the EEM-PARAFAC method were validated with an established gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to use an EEM-PARAFAC method to monitor, identify, and quantify both PAH biodegradation and PAH metabolite formation by a bacterial pure culture.

The microbial synergy and response mechanisms of hydrolysis-acidification combined microbial electrolysis cell system with stainless-steel cathode for textile-dyeing wastewater treatment

Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) has been existing problems such as poor applicability to real wastewater and lack of cost-effective electrode materials in the practical application of refractory wastewater. A hydrolysis-acidification combined MEC system (HAR-MECs) with four inexpensive stainless-steel and conventional carbon cloth cathodes for the treatment of real textile-dyeing wastewater, which was fully evaluated the technical feasibility in terms of parameter optimization, spectral analysis, succession and cooperative/competition effect of microbial. Results showed that the optimum performance was achieved with a 12 h hydraulic retention time (HRT) and an applied voltage of 0.7 V in the HAR-MEC system with a 100 μm aperture stainless-steel mesh cathode (SSM-100 μm), and the associated optimum BOD₅/COD improvement efficiency (74.75 ± 4.32 %) and current density (5.94 ± 0.03 A·m^-2) were increased by 30.36 % and 22.36 % compared to a conventional carbon cloth cathode. The optimal system had effective removal of refractory organics and produced small molecules by electrical stimulation. The HAR segment could greatly alleviate the imbalance between electron donors and electron acceptors in the real refractory wastewater and reduce the treatment difficulty of the MEC segment, while the MEC system improved wastewater biodegradability, amplified the positive and specific interactions between degraders, fermenters and electroactive bacteria due to the substrate complexity. The SSM-100 μm-based system constructed by phylogenetic molecular ecological network (pMEN) exhibited moderate complexity and significantly strong positive correlation between electroactive bacteria and fermenters. It is highly feasible to use HAR-MEC with inexpensive stainless-steel cathode for textile-dyeing wastewater treatment.

Dissolved organic matter within oil and gas associated wastewaters from U.S. unconventional petroleum plays: Comparisons and consequences for disposal and reuse

Wastewater generated during petroleum extraction (produced water) may contain high concentrations of dissolved organics due to their intimate association with organic-rich source rocks, expelled petroleum, and organic additives to fluids used for hydraulic fracturing of unconventional (e.g., shale) reservoirs. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) within produced water represents a challenge for treatment prior to beneficial reuse. High salinities characteristic of produced water, often 10× greater than seawater, coupled to the complex DOM ensemble create analytical obstacles with typical methods. Excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy (EEMS) can rapidly characterize the fluorescent component of DOM with little impact from matrix effects. We applied EEMS to evaluate DOM composition in 18 produced water samples from six North American unconventional petroleum plays. Represented reservoirs include the Eagle Ford Shale (Gulf Coast Basin), Wolfcamp/Cline Shales (Permian Basin), Marcellus Shale and Utica/Point Pleasant (Appalachian Basin), Niobrara Chalk (Denver-Julesburg Basin), and the Bakken Formation (Williston Basin). Results indicate that the relative chromophoric DOM composition in unconventional produced water may distinguish different lithologies, thermal maturity of resource types (e.g., heavy oil vs. dry gas), and fracturing fluid compositions, but is generally insensitive to salinity and DOM concentration. These results are discussed with perspective toward DOM influence on geochemical processes and the potential for targeted organic compound treatment for the reuse of produced water.

Adsorption of ammonia nitrogen and phenol onto the lignite surface: An experimental and molecular dynamics simulation study

Ammonia nitrogen and phenol are typical inorganic and organic pollutants in the coal chemical wastewater, respectively. In this study, the adsorption characteristics of ammonia nitrogen and phenol on lignite were investigated through experimental and molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the adsorption of ammonia nitrogen was carried out via ion exchange, which was significantly faster than the adsorption of phenol driven by the π-π interaction. In the binary adsorption, the surface electronegativity of lignite decreased with the adsorption of ammonia nitrogen thereby promoting the adsorption of phenol. However, the extent of ammonia nitrogen adsorption was slightly reduced in the presence of phenol. Molecular dynamics simulation results indicated that the adsorption of phenol molecules on the lignite surface was closer than that of ammonium ion. The addition of ammonium ions could enhance the adsorption of phenol molecules on the lignite surface. The simulation results were well consistent with the experimental findings. This study indicates lignite has a promising potential in coal chemical wastewater adsorption pretreatment.

Metals pollution from textile production wastewater in Chinese southeastern coastal area: occurrence, source identification, and associated risk assessment

The metals used in textile wet processing are of significant concern for the environment and human health. However, our understanding of metals released by the Chinese textile industry and their potential risks to ecology is limited. This work quantified the concentrations of seven metals in 199 wastewater samples from 77 textile enterprises in the southeastern coastal area of China. In the water discharged after end-of-pipe treatment, the mean concentrations of Sb, Hg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, and As were 0.289, 0.009, 0.579, 0.277, 0.035, 0.016, and 0.013 mg/L, respectively. Alkali deweighting effluents, dyeing effluents, and influents into regulation tanks were observed to be "hotspots" for metal distributions. Among the seven target metals, only Sb was found to be significantly correlated with COD, NH₃-N, TN, and TP. The results of one-way ANOVA suggested that the Sb mainly came from the processing of polyester fibers. Overall, the majority of discharged wastewater samples were at safe levels, according to six health indicators. Sb posed elevated risks in comparison to other elements, which necessitated further concern. The findings can help decision-makers prevent hazardous metal contamination in the textile and dyeing industry, and provide a basis for the further study of the mechanisms of metal migration in the environment.

A novel study for joint toxicity of typical aromatic compounds in coal pyrolysis wastewater by Tetrahymena thermophile

The coal pyrolysis wastewater (CPW) contributed to aquatic environment contamination with amount of aromatic pollutants, and the research on joint toxicity of the mixture of aromatic compounds was vital for environmental protection. By using Tetrahymena thermophile as non-target organism, the joint toxicity of typical nonpolar narcotics and polar narcotics in CPW was investigated. The results demonstrated that the nonpolar narcotics exerted chronic and reversible toxicity by hydrophobicity-based membrane perturbation, while polar narcotics performed acute toxicity by irreversible damage of cells. As the most hydrophobic nonpolar narcotics, indole and naphthalene caused the highest joint toxicity in 24 h with the lowest EC_50mix (24.93 mg/L). For phenolic compounds, the combination of p-cresol and p-nitrophenol also showed the top toxicity (EC_50mix = 10.9 mg/L) with relation to high hydrophobicity, and the joint toxicity was obviously stronger and more acute than that of nonpolar narcotics. Furthermore, by studying the joint toxicity of nonpolar narcotics and polar narcotics, the hydrophobicity-based membrane perturbation was the first step of toxicity effects, and afterwards the acute toxicity induced by electrophilic polar substituents of phenols dominated joint toxicity afterwards. This toxicity investigation was critical for understanding universal and specific effects of CPW to aquatic organisms.

Surrogates for on-line monitoring of the attenuation of trace organic contaminants during advanced oxidation processes for water reuse

The large number of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in wastewater has resulted in severe concerns to human health. Ozonation and UV/H₂O₂ are widely used to remove TrOCs in wastewater treatment process. Owing to the trace concentrations of TrOCs in wastewater, real-time monitoring of the abatement efficiency of TrOCs through ozonation and UV/H₂O₂ is quite challenging. Instead of a direct measurement of all the TrOCs, the research community has begun to use different surrogates to monitor the attenuation of TrOCs during AOPs. Various surrogates have been developed over the past few decades. In this review, the different types of surrogates are summarized, including ultraviolet spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Strong linear correlations have been found for the removal of TrOCs using AOPs, and the abatement of UV absorption spectroscopy at 254 nm or total fluorescence (TF). Moreover, a two-phase linear correlation can better describe the ozone-resistant TrOCs compared with a single linear correlation. Two different kinds of predictive models exist that use surrogates as the input for ozonation: the regression model and kinetic model. The development of the models requires a further understanding of the impacts of water quality, seasonal variations, and storm events on the kinetic parameters. For the in situ monitoring system, the light-emitting diode (LED) is one of the most promising light sources, although the sensitivity and accuracy still need to be improved.

Relationship between fluorescence excitation-emission matrix properties and the relative degree of DOM hydrophobicity in wastewater treatment effluents

Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the characterization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in wastewater systems. It is of particular value if its utility could be extended by connecting the spectral features to hydrophobicity, one of the fundamental physicochemical properties of DOM. In this study, we employed a DAX-8 resin column to fractionate the hydrophobic/philic components of DOM and determine the relative degree of hydrophobicity by adjusting the critical retention factor (k'_cr, the ratio of treated water sample volume to column volume). A higher k'_cr would result in a higher hydrophobicity of the column effluent. At different k'_cr values (5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 200), the EEM characteristics of the obtained DOM components were inspected, including overall properties (average fluorescence per total organic carbon and UV absorbance), regional properties (fluorescence regional integration (FRI) and its secondary parameters), and energy-related properties (energy level of the excited states, Stokes shift for relaxation of the excited states, and fluorescence lifetime). In case studies of a wastewater membrane bioreactor and an oxidation ditch, plenty of the EEM properties varied significantly with logk'_cr (r > 0.9, p < 0.05). The average fluorescence per UV absorbance (reflecting quantum yield), fluorescence proportion at Stokes shift ≥ 1.1 μm^-1, and some secondary FRI parameters presented the best linear fitting with logk'_cr, suggesting a smooth variation of the π-conjugated structures with the relative degree of DOM hydrophobicity. This may help to further understand the relationship between EEM fingerprints and DOM hydrophobicity.

Insights into electroactive biofilms for enhanced phenolic degradation of coal pyrolysis wastewater (CPW) by magnetic activated coke (MAC): Metagenomic analysis in attached biofilm and suspended sludge

To investigate the role of electroactive biofilms for enhanced phenolic degradation, lignite activated coke (LAC) and MAC were used as carriers in moving-bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) for CPW treatment. In contrast to activated sludge (AS) reactor, the carriers improved degradation performance of MBBR. Although two MBBRs exerted similar degradation capacity with over 92% of COD and 93% phenols removal under the highest phenolics concentration (500 mg/L), the effluent of MAC-based MBBR remained higher biodegradability (BOD₅/COD = 0.34 vs 0.18) than that of LAC-based MBBR. Metagenomic analysis revealed that electroactive biofilms determined phenolic degradation of MAC-based MBBR. Primarily, Geobacter (17.33%) started Fe redox cycle on biofilms and developed syntrophy with Syntrophorhabdus (6.47%), which fermented phenols into easily biodegradable substrates. Subsequently, Ignavibacterium (3.38% to 2.52%) and Acidovorax (0.46% to 8.83%) conducted biological electricity from electroactive biofilms to suspended sludge. They synergized with dominated genus in suspended sludge, Alicycliphilus (19.56%) that accounted for phenolic oxidation and nitrate reduction. Consequently, the significantly advantage of Geobater and Syntrophorhabdus was the keystone reason for superior biodegradability maintenance of MAC-based MBBR.

Investigation of hydrolysis acidification process during anaerobic treatment of coal gasification wastewater (CGW): Evolution of dissolved organic matter and biotoxicity

Coal gasification wastewater (CGW) contains several types of aromatic pollutants, which impart high biotoxicity and reduce the quality of anaerobic treatment. Two types of hydrolysis acidification processes, namely microaerobic hybrid reactor (HA-1) and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (HA-2), were developed for pre-treatment before the anaerobic treatment. The changes in the dissolved organic matter and biotoxicity were investigated to comprehensively understand the degradation process. The results showed that HA-2 coupled with an anaerobic reactor achieved a 12.3% and 13.4% higher removal efficiency for chemical oxygen demand and total phenols, respectively, compared with the coupled process with HA-1. Furthermore, HA-2 could transform macromolecules into small molecules more efficiently and produce fewer intermediates. The coupled process with HA-2 preferentially removed complex aromatic substances with absorption wavelengths of 285 and 254 nm, according to the sequential orders interpreted from two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy. In addition, the results of fluorescence excitation-emission-matrix with regional integration analysis revealed that the contents of typical cyclic compounds in CGW, such as phenolic, heterocyclic, and polycyclic aromatic compounds were remarkably reduced by HA-2. In addition, HA-2 reduced the toxic unit value of CGW by 67.5% and increased the resazurin dehydrogenase activity of the sludge by 37.5% during CGW treatment, thus improving the biotoxicity removal and biodegradability. However, the coupled process with HA-2 did not significantly affect the "indirect estrogenic activity" of CGW. A Pearson correlation analysis indicated that spectral indicators, such as UV₂₅₄ and Φ_T,n, presented a high positive correlation with the reduction of acute toxicity and organics.

Separation of BTX Fraction from Reservoir Brines by Sorption onto Hydrophobized Biomass in a Fixed-Bed-Column System

Oily brine from the gas and oil industries remains the most difficult wastewater to treat due to its complex chemical composition, which includes aromatic hydrocarbons. Even at low concentrations, the presence of BTX (benzene, toluene, xylenes) can be extremely harmful to aquatic ecosystems. Fixed-bed adsorption columns are recommended for oily water treatment due to their flexibility and easy operation. In this research, pine sawdust modified with polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) and hydrophobic nanosilica was applied as a sorbent in a filtration system. The surface modification of raw fiber allowed to change its morphology and increase the roughness of it. The Yoon–Nelson, Bohart–Adams, Clark, and Belter models were applied to simulate continuous biosorption. The Bohart–Adams model strongly correlated with the experimental data and described the whole dynamic behavior of the column. The effect of feed flow rate (10–50 mL/min) on breakthrough characteristics was determined. Both the breakthrough and saturation time decreased as the flow rate increased. This study indicated that hydrophobized pine sawdust is an effective low-cost potential biosorbent for the removal of BTX fraction from produced water in continuous column mode.

Effective removal by coagulation of contaminants in concentrated leachate from municipal solid waste incineration power plants

Municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration is widely used in China. Concentrated leachate, containing high concentrations of pollutants, is an important type of secondary pollution produced in MSW incineration power plants and requires proper treatment. In this study, various coagulants were used to treat concentrated leachate from a nanofiltration (NF) membrane that treated leachate from an MSW incineration plant. The optimal coagulation condition was determined in this study. Under the optimal condition, removals of chemical oxygen demand, light absorbing substances (at 254 nm), total nitrogen, color and turbidity were 68.42%, 69.01%, 44.14%, 92.31% and 87.44%, respectively. Much of the refractory organic matter with relatively high molecular weight, aromaticity and humification degree was removed, and effluent had a lower molecular weight than raw NF concentrated leachate. Study also found that some parts of high molecular weight compounds from NF CL were removed by coagulation process, but the change of distribution of molecular weight was not outstanding. The NF concentrated leachate, both before and after coagulation, contained a large amount of chloride. Hence, a follow-up study should be conducted to find an effective additional processing that can remove organic matter using the high concentration of chloride in the NF concentrated leachate coagulation effluent. This study provides a theoretical basis for the treatment of concentrated leachate from MSW incineration power plants.
