Abstract
Purpose
Automated flow line manufacturing systems are becoming more and more relevant in industry, especially in the food and beverage sector. Improving the efficiency of automated flow line manufacturing systems is the core objectives of all companies as measured by the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) index. The purpose of this paper is to carry out an innovative micro downtime data collection and statistical analysis in the food and beverage sector; it introduces a numerical indicator called “Cost Performance Indicator-CPI” to estimate the performance improvement of investment activities. Moreover this analysis will be used as a basis to carry out a new simulative model to study micro downtime of automatic production lines. In addition, the presented micro downtime data collection and statistical analysis will be used to construct a new simulative model to support improvement activities.
Design/methodology/approach
Descriptive and statistical analyses are carried out about OEE, time to repair (TTR) and time to failure (TTF) data. The least efficient production line is identified and principal causes of inefficiency are investigated. Micro downtime (downtime lower than 15 minutes) covers 57 percent of inefficiency. Investigations are carried out into the three principal machines affected by this inefficiency. The study then investigates the causes of micro downtime of these machines using ad hoc data collection and analysis. The probability distributions of TTF and TTR are evaluated and an analysis of micro downtime causes and a cause-effect is carried out. The most attractive investment in terms of recoverable OEE (1.44 percent) and costs is analyzed through the calculation of a CPI. One of the conclusions is to recommend the introduction of a payback period with a variable contribution margin.
Findings
This study get the basis for the construction of a new simulative model based on ad hoc micro downtime probability distributions, applied in automated flow line manufacturing systems. It gives an effort to downtime analysis in automated production lines and a guideline for future analysis. Results of this study can be generalized and extended to other similar cases, in order to study similar micro downtime inefficiency of other production lines. The statistical analysis developed could also potentially be used to further investigate the relationship between the reliability of specific machines and that of the entire line.
Originality/value
The case study presents a new detailed micro downtime data collection and statistical analysis in the beverage sector with the application of a numerical indicator, the CPI, in order to drive future actions. In addition, the presented micro downtime data collection and statistical analysis will be used to construct a new simulative model to support improvement activities. Moreover, results can be generalized and used as a basis for other micro downtime analyses involving the main causes of inefficiency in automated production lines.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide results for a complete reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) analysis utilizing data sets from a production system in a wine packaging line. Through the illustrated case study, the author demonstrates how RAM analysis is very useful for deciding maintenance intervals, and for planning and organizing the adequate maintenance strategy.
Design/methodology/approach
RAM analysis has been done for each machine by using failures data. The parameters of some common probability distributions, such as Weibull, exponential, lognormal, and normal distributions, have been estimated by using the Minitab software package. An investigation to determine which of these distributions provide the best fit for characterizing the failure pattern at machine and line level has been made. Reliability and maintainability of both wine packaging and its machines has been estimated at different mission times with their best fit distribution. High maintainability issues and potential factors with their potential failure modes were presented, through failure mode and effect analysis process.
Findings
Analysis of the total downtime, breakdown frequency, reliability, and maintainability characteristics of different machines shows that: first, the availability for the wine packaging line was 91.80 percent, and for the remaining 8.2 percent the line is under repair. Second, about two failures per shift are displayed on the line, whereas for the mean time-to-repair (TTR) a failure is 24 minutes. Third, there is no correlation between the time-between-failures and the TTRs for the wine packaging line. Fourth, the main three factors affecting the maintainability process in the production line are: resources availability, manpower management, and maintenance planning procedures.
Originality/value
This study is anticipated to serve as an illuminating effort in conducting a complete RAM analysis in the much advertised field of wine packaging production line which on the other hand so little has been published on operational availability and equipment effectiveness. It can also be useful to serve as a valid data source for winery product manufacturers, who wish to improve the design and operation of their production lines.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide results for a complete maintainability analysis utilizing data sets from a production system in a shaving blades division of a large high-tech razor manufacturer. Through the illustrated case study, the authors demonstrate how to spot improvement points for enhancing availability by carrying out an equipment effectiveness analysis.
Design/methodology/approach
Descriptive statistics of the repair data and the best fitness index parameters were computed. Repair data were collected from departmental logs, and a preliminary screening analysis was conducted to validate their usefulness for the indicated period of 11 months. Next, the maintainability and repair rate modes for all the machines of the production system were calculated. Maintainability and availability estimations for different time periods that took in account the overall system were obtained by trying out and selecting an optimum statistical model after considering of several popular distributions.
Findings
Out of the five considered machines in the system, two particular units received about half of the repairs (M2 and M3). The time to repair follows a loglogistic distribution and subsequently the mean time to repair is estimated at 25 minutes at the machine level. Repair time performance is approximated at 55 minutes if the availability of the system is to attain a 90 percent maintainability.
Originality/value
This study is anticipated to serve as an illuminating effort in conducting a complete maintainability analysis in the much advertised field of shavers, for which on the contrary so little has been published on operational availability and equipment effectiveness. The case study augments the available pool of sources where executing maintainability studies is highlighted usually under the direction of combined total quality management and total productive maintenance programs.

Abstract
Robot arrangement in the automotive assembly plant in manufacturing environment consists of series and parallel configurations. Robot subsystems at painting lines were configured in series configuration while overall system was configured in parallel. Interruption of operations due to breakdown at both subsystems during operation would affect the production throughput. The robots’ breakdown data for each subsystem were acquired for reliability analysis of parallel-serial configuration of robots. This study is to analyze the serial subsystems robot reliability compared to reliability of robots in overall system in parallel-serial configuration. The seven years actual breakdown data were acquired from the automotive painting plant. By using the reliability block diagram (RBD) method, at the 5000 operating hours, the two subsystems at the painting lines were evaluated. Reliability of the two subsystems are 0.029 and 0.119 respectively. While the overall parallel-serial system has the reliability of 0.145. It is proven that the parallel-serial reliability of the system is better compared to series configuration of the subsystems. With parallel-serial system, the production line would not be interrupted during the corrective or preventive maintenance worked.
