Abstract
The direct or indirect discharge of organic pollutants causes serious environmental problems and endangers human health. The high electron-hole recombination rate greatly limits the catalytic efficiency of traditional TiO2-based catalysts. Therefore, starting from low-cost activated carbon (AC), a photocatalyst (F-Si-TiO2/AC) comprising fluorine (F)- and silicon (Si)-doped TiO2 loaded on AC has been developed. F-Si-TiO2/AC has a porous structure. TiO2 nanoparticles were uniformly fixed on the surface or pores of AC, producing many catalytic sites. The band gap of F-Si-TiO2/AC is only 2.7 eV. In addition, F-Si-TiO2/AC exhibits an excellent adsorption capacity toward methyl orange (MO) (57%) in the dark after 60 min. Under the optimal preparation conditions, F-Si-TiO2/AC showed a significant photodegradation performance toward MO, reaching 97.7% after irradiation with visible light for 70 min. Even under the action of different anions and cations, its degradation efficiency is the lowest, at 64.0%, which has good prospects for practical application. At the same time, F-Si-TiO2/AC has long-term, stable, practical application potential and can be easily recovered from the solution. Therefore, this work provides new insights for the fabrication of low-cost, porous, activated, carbon-based photocatalysts, which can be used as high-performance photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract
Photocatalysis has attracted wide attention in eliminating volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This paper pays attention to the relationship between structure and performance of photocatalysts based on the fact that catalytic reactions arise on the surface of catalysts and the interface structure of photocatalysts plays key role in transfer efficiency of charges carriers. This review summarizes various surface/interface designs including unsaturated coordination such as oxygen vacancies, surface halogenations, and heterojunctions, homojunctions, facets, etc., as well as the application in photocatalytic degradation of VOCs. This paper reviews the influence of surface and interface properties of materials on VOCs molecules, effective strategies to promote the decomposition of VOCs from the perspectives of VOCs activation, reaction barrier etc., and presents various methods of photocatalyst design appropriately. The degradation path of highly toxic benzene VOCs are also summarized. In addition, the possible problems and suggestions for photocatalytic degradation of VOCs are proposed.

Abstract
Interfacial processes, including adsorption and catalysis, play crucial roles in environmental contaminant removal. Mechanochemical activation (MCA) emerges as a competitive method to improve the performance of adsorbents and catalysts. The development and application of MCA in the last decades are thereby systematically reviewed, particularly highlighting its contribution to interfacial process modulation. Two typical apparatuses for MCA are ball milling (BaM) and bead milling (BeM). Compared to BaM, BeM is able to yield a much higher MCA intensity, because it could pulverize bulk solid particles to nearly 100 nm. Since MCA intensity on the adsorbents and catalysts is directly responsible for the contaminant removal afterwards, quantitative and qualitative determination methods for valid MCA intensity are introduced. MCA benefits both the adsorption kinetics and capacity of powdered activated carbon by increasing the specific surface area. Carbon oxidation should be given an additional attention, but potentially favors the adsorption of heavy metals. MCA favors the catalyst performance by providing abundant surface functional group and increasing the free energy in the near-surface region. Finally, the future research needs are identified.

Abstract
The use of solar energy to drive organic reactions under mild conditions provides a sustainable pathway for green synthesis and has been one of the primary goals pursued by scientists. In this research, the cadmium indium sulfide (CdIn2S4) photocatalyst was prepared using a simple solvothermal method and was thoroughly characterized using X-ray powder diffraction, UV-visible absorption spectra, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray spectroscopy measurements. The photocatalytic performance of the CdIn2S4 photocatalyst was evaluated using photocatalytic synthesis of Schiff base compounds in a coupled system of aromatic alcohols and nitrobenzene under visible light irradiation. The yield of N-benzylideneaniline reached up to 32% in the coupled system of benzyl alcohol and nitrobenzene under visible light illumination for 8 h. Furthermore, the changes for the amounts of aromatic aldehydes and AL as intermediate products during the photocatalytic process were also investigated. Using isotopic tracing, a possible reaction mechanism for the photocatalytic synthesis of N-benzylideneaniline and the redox reactions in the coupled system of benzyl alcohol and nitrobenzene was proposed. It is hoped that this strategy can provide an effective pathway for the traditional organic synthesis and transformation using photocatalytic technology under mild conditions.

Abstract
Z-scheme photocatalytic system shows superiority in degradation of refractory pollutants and water splitting due to the high redox capacities caused by its unique charge transfer behaviors. As a key component of Z-scheme system, the electron mediator plays an important role in charge carrier migration. According to the energy band theory, we believe the interfacial energy band bendings facilitate the electron transfer via Z-scheme mechanism when the Fermi level of electron mediator is between the Fermi levels of Photosystem II (PS II) and Photosystem I (PS I), whereas charge transfer is inhibited in other cases as energy band barriers would form at the semiconductor-metal interfaces. Here, this inference was verified by the increased hydroxyl radical generation and improved photocurrent on WO3-Cu-gC3N4 (with the desired Fermi level structure), which were not observed on either WO3-Ag-gC3N4 or WO3-Au-gC3N4. Finally, photocatalytic degradation rate of 4-nonylphenol on WO3-Cu-gC3N4 was proved to be as high as 11.6 times than that of WO3-gC3N4, further demonstrating the necessity of a suitable electron mediator in Z-scheme system. This study provides scientific basis for rational construction of Z-scheme photocatalytic system.

Abstract
Carbon and boron co-doped TiO(2) photocatalysts were prepared firstly by the gel-hydrothermal method, that is, synthesized through sol-gel process followed by hydrothermal in the glucose solution. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, Raman spectra, TEM, N(2) physical adsorption, XPS, and UV-vis absorption spectra. It was found that the co-doped TiO(2) has a larger BET surface areas and a narrower band gap than undoped TiO(2). The experimental results show that the coke carbon generated on the carbon doped TiO(2) surface act as a photosensitizer and has the photosensitization effect under the visible light. Except for carbon sensitization effect, the boron and carbon co-doped TiO(2) has synergistic effect which is responsible for effective photo-degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol in the visible light irradiation.
