Separation of n-hexane/acetone mixtures by pervaporation using high density polyethylene/ethylene propylene diene terpolymer rubber blend membranes

Effects of bamboo-charcoal modified by bimetallic Fe/Pd nanoparticles on n-hexane biodegradation by bacteria Pseudomonas mendocina NX-1

The high hydrophobicity of n-hexane is the main reason why it is difficult to be removed biologically. In this study, the effects of bamboo-charcoal modified by bimetallic Fe/Pd (BBC) on n-hexane biodegradation by Pseudomonas mendocina NX-1 (PM) was investigated. The n-hexane removal efficiency was increased in the presence of BC. The highest n-hexane removal efficiency at 90.0% was achieved at 0.05 g L^-1 BCE and 3 g L^-1 NH₄⁺ under pH 7.7 and 35 °C. Additionally, protein content (45.9 μg mL^-1) and negative cell surface zeta potential (-26.4 mV) were increased during biodegradation process, with PM-BBC being 43.1 μg mL^-1 and 19.1 mV. Bacterial growth was improved and maximum cell surface hydrophobicity was obtained after 20 h, which was 59.4% higher than the control with PM-BBC (37.7%) or PM (16.1%), showing biodegradation products of 1-butanol and acetic acid. The results indicate that BBC improved n-hexane biodegradation efficiency by promoting bacterial growth, reducing cell zeta potential, exposing hydrophobic proteins, and increasing cell surface hydrophobicity of bacterial strain NX-1. This investigation suggests that BBC-enhanced biodegradation can be promising to treat n-hexane-containing gas.

Purification of Pharmaceutical Solvents by Pervaporation through Hybrid Silica Membranes

Solvents purification mainly used in pharmaceutical field such as acetone and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) were performed through hybrid silica membranes and from binary and multi-components mixtures. Two hybrid silica membranes—zirconia doped bis(triethoxysilyl)methane and bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE)—were studied. Flux, permeance, and separation factor were evaluated depending on temperature, composition, and number of organic compounds in the feed. Dehydration tests of acetone were operated at 30 and 45 °C following by acetone and MEK purification at 50 °C from multi-components hydro-organic mixtures where hydrophilic compounds (water, methanol) but also hydrophobic (dichloromethane (DCM) and/or toluene) were present. Results showed that the presence of Zr nanoparticles affected flux and improved selectivity in the case of dehydration. Experiments related to acetone and MEK purification, revealed a mass transfer alteration and a decrease of performance, from 99 to 97 wt% and from 98 to 95 wt% respectively, when the number of compounds in the initial feed grown up and more precisely, in the presence of DCM and toluene thus highlighting a possible coupling effect.

Removal of hazardous chlorinated VOCs from aqueous solutions using novel ZSM-5 loaded PDMS/PVDF composite membrane consisting of three hydrophobic layers

Hydrophobic polymer possesses significant potential for selective separation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from their aqueous solutions by pervaporation (PV). In the present study mixed matrix hydrophobic membranes of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) supported on polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) substrate were synthesized by incorporating hydrophobic inorganic ZSM-5 filler. The indigenous membranes were crosslinked with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) for the extraction of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dichloromethane (DCM), trichloromethane (TCM), 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE), and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TeCE), which pose serious environment threat and health hazard. Thermal stability, crosslinking, crystallinity, surface morphology and swelling characteristics of the indigenously developed membranes were determined by TGA, FTIR, XRD, SEM and sorption studies, respectively. Effect of operating parameters such as feed composition and filler concentration on separation performance in terms of flux and selectivity were determined. Flux of DCM, TCM, DCE and TeCE was found to be 0.166, 0.146, 0.141 and 0.06 kg m(-2)h(-1) with selectivity of 541, 1068, 917 and 15,000, respectively, for 20% ZSM-5 filled PDMS membrane for aqueous feeds containing 1.33% (w/v) DCM, 0.8% (w/v) TCM, 0.84% (w/v) DCE and 0.28% (w/v) TeCE in water. The membrane exhibited considerable feasibility for scale-up with significant potential for removal of hazardous chlorinated VOCs from aqueous solutions.
