Construction of natural polymeric imprinted materials and their applications in water treatment: A review

Advancements in mercury detection using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs): a review

Mercury (Hg) contamination remains a major environmental concern primarily due to its presence at trace levels, making monitoring the concentration of Hg challenging. Sensitivity and selectivity are significant challenges in the development of mercury sensors. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) are two distinct analytical methods developed and employed for mercury detection. In this review, we provide an overview of the key aspects of SERS and IIP methodologies, focusing on the recent advances in sensitivity and selectivity for mercury detection. By examining the critical parameters and challenges commonly encountered in this area of research, as reported in the literature, we present a set of recommendations. These recommendations cover solid and colloidal SERS substrates, appropriate Raman reporter/probe molecules, and customization of IIPs for mercury sensing and removal. Furthermore, we provide a perspective on the potential integration of SERS with IIPs to achieve enhanced sensitivity and selectivity in mercury detection. Our aim is to foster the establishment of a SERS-IIP hybrid method as a robust analytical tool for mercury detection across diverse fields.

Biomass chitosan/sodium alginate colorimetric imprinting hydrogels with integrated capture and visualization detection for cadmium(II)

Due to Cd(II) with highly toxic, persistent and bioaccumulative, the discharge of it into the environment brings serious pollution. Developing strategies that are efficient, low-cost, pollution-free and specific to removing Cd(II) from wastewater is therefore of great urgency and prime importance. A novel chitosan/sodium alginate ionic imprinting(IICA) hydrogels with specific adsorption capacity for Cd(II) was prepared through freeze-thaw and ion imprinting, and finally the colorimetric sensor (IICAS) was prepared via introducing Rhodamine B(RhB) and Victoria blue(VBB) by immersion to achieve visual detection of Cd(II). The IICA hydrogels with imprinted hole structure had higher adsorption capacity and better specific selectivity for Cd(II). As well as internal diffusion, coordination, ion exchange, and hydrogen bonding influenced the adsorption rate. Moreover, the IICAS exhibited good selective detection ability and linearity for Cd(II) with the fitted correlation coefficient (R2) = 0.98, limit of detection (LOD) = 35 nmol/L. Combined with the smartphone platform, portable and quantitative detection of Cd(II) can be achieved, Within the 0-100 mg/L range, R2 remained 0.94, and LOD was 75 nmol/L. This strategy of preparing a novel whole biomass IICAS integrating capture and visual detection provides a new insight into the construction of a promising candidate sensor for the removal and detection of Cd(II).

Removal of Erythromycin from Water by Ibuprofen-Driven Pre-Organized Divinyl Sulfone Cross-Linked Dextrin

Water recycling and reuse are cornerstones of water management, which can be compromised by the presence of pollutants. Among these, pharmaceuticals can overcome standard water treatments and require sophisticated approaches to remove them. Sorption is an economically viable alternative limited by the need for sorbents with a sorption coefficient (Kd) higher than 500 L/kg. The cross-linking of dextrin (Dx) with divinyl sulfone (DVS) in the presence of 1 mmol or 5 mmol of ibuprofen (IBU) yields the insoluble polymers pDx1 and pDx5 with improved affinity for IBU and high selectivity towards erythromycin (ERY) and ERY Kd higher than 4 × 103 L/kg, when tested against a cocktail of six drugs. Characterization of the polymers shows that both pDx1 and pDx5 have similar properties, fast sorption kinetics, and ERY Kd of 13.3 × 103 for pDx1 and 6.4 × 103 for pDx5, representing 26.6 and 12.0 times the 500 L/kg threshold. The fact that new affinities and improvements in Kd can be achieved by cross-linking Dx in the presence of other molecules that promote pre-organization expands the applications of DVS cross-linked polysaccharides as sustainable, scalable, and environmentally friendly sorbents with a potential application in wastewater treatment plants (WTPs).

Efficient adsorption of chloroquine phosphate by a novel sodium alginate/tannic acid double-network hydrogel in a wide pH range

In this work, a novel double-network composite hydrogel (SA/TA), composed of sodium alginate (SA) and tannic acid (TA), was designed and fabricated by a successive cross-linking method using Ti(IV) and Ca(II) as crosslinkers. SA/TA exhibited reinforced mechanical strength and anti-swelling properties because of the double-network structure. SA/TA was used as an adsorbent for removal of a popular antiviral drug, chloroquine phosphate (CQ), in water. The adsorption performance of SA/TA was systematically investigated, to study various effects including those of TA mass content, solution pH, adsorption time, and initial CQ concentration. Adsorption was also examined in presence of inorganic and organic coexisting substances commonly found in wastewater, and under different actual water samples. Batch experimental results indicated that SA/TA could maintain higher and more stable CQ uptakes within a wide solution pH range from 3.0 to 10.0, compared to its precursor, SA hydrogel, owing to the addition of TA-Ti(IV) coordination network. The maximum experimental CQ uptake exhibited by the 1:1 (by wt) SA/TA (SA/TA2) was as high as 0.699 mmol/g at the initial pH of 9.0. A high concentration of coexisting NaCl evidently reduced the CQ uptakes of SA/TA2 due to the electrostatic shielding effect, moreover, divalent cations including Ca(II) and Mg(II) also inhibited the adsorption of CQ due to competitive adsorption. However, humic acid had little effect on this adsorption. Considering the apparent adsorption performance, the aforementioned effects of various factors and the spectroscopic characterizations, multi-interactions are suggested for adsorption including chelation, electrostatic interactions, π-π electron donor-acceptor interaction and hydrogen bonding. SA/TA showed a slight loss in adsorption capacity toward CQ and sustained physicochemical structural stability, even after six adsorption-desorption cycles. In addition to CQ, SA/TA could be efficiently used for adsorption of two other antivirus drugs, namely, hydroxychloroquine sulfate and oseltamivir phosphate. This work provides an effective strategy for the design and fabrication of novel adsorbents that can effectively adsorb antiviral drugs over a wide pH range.

Thiol-Ene Click Reaction in Constructing Liquid Separation Membranes for Water Treatment

In the evolving landscape of water treatment, membrane technology has ascended to an instrumental role, underscored by its unmatched efficacy and ubiquity. Diverse synthesis and modification techniques are employed to fabricate state-of-the-art liquid separation membranes. Click reactions, distinguished by their rapid kinetics, minimal byproduct generation, and simple reaction condition, emerge as a potent paradigm for devising eco-functional materials. While the metal-free thiol-ene click reaction is acknowledged as a viable approach for membrane material innovation, a systematic elucidation of its applicability in liquid separation membrane development remains conspicuously absent. This review elucidates the pre-functionalization strategies of substrate materials tailored for thiol-ene reactions, notably highlighting thiolation and introducing unsaturated moieties. The consequential implications of thiol-ene reactions on membrane properties-including trade-off effect, surface wettability, and antifouling property-are discussed. The application of thiol-ene reaction in fabricating various liquid separation membranes for different water treatment processes, including wastewater treatment, oil/water separation, and ion separation, are reviewed. Finally, the prospects of thiol-ene reaction in designing novel liquid separation membrane, including pre-functionalization, products prediction, and solute-solute separation membrane, are proposed. This review endeavors to furnish invaluable insights, paving the way for expanding the horizons of thiol-ene reaction application in liquid separation membrane fabrication.

Exposure and risk assessment of phthalates in environmental water using a three-template molecularly imprinted fiber array strategy

Phthalate is a kind of environmental estrogen having a reproductive toxicity effect on animals and plants in the environment, and its detection is prone to matrix interference. Nevertheless, the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) can resist matrix interference. A three-template MIP solid-phase microextraction fiber array technique with improved adsorption flux and extraction capacity was innovatively developed. Additionally, the three-template MIP fiber arrays were used to screen phthalates in environmental water. The result showed that the three-template MIP fiber array had great potential for monitoring and controlling phthalate in environmental water. Moreover, the enrichment factors of the three-template MIP fiber arrays were 1410.65, 2419.55, and 493.21 times those of PA, PDMS, and PDMS/DVB commercial fiber-constructed arrays, respectively. The risk assessment using risk quotient revealed that BBP and DPHP had a medium-high ecological risk, DMP had a medium-low ecological risk, while EP and BP had a minimal ecological risk. This strategy represents an effective, easily tailored, and reusable method to simultaneously enhance extraction capacity and adsorption flux. It is environmentally friendly and has great feasibility for specific recognition of phthalate from environmental water and ecological risk assessment.

Occurrence, toxicity, impact and removal of selected non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): A review

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most frequently used pharmaceuticals for human therapy, pet therapeutics, and veterinary feeds, enabling them to enter into water sources such as wastewater, soil and sediment, and seawater. The control of NSAIDs has led to the advent of the novel materials for treatment techniques. Herein, we review the occurrence, impact and toxicity of NSAIDs against aquatic microorganisms, plants and humans. Typical NSAIDs, e.g., ibuprofen, ketoprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and aspirin were detected at high concentrations in wastewater up to 2,747,000 ng L-1. NSAIDs in water could cause genotoxicity, endocrine disruption, locomotive disorders, body deformations, organs damage, and photosynthetic corruption. Considering treatment methods, among adsorbents for removal of NSAIDs from water, metal-organic frameworks (10.7-638 mg g-1) and advanced porous carbons (7.4-400 mg g-1) were the most robust. Therefore, these carbon-based adsorbents showed promise in efficiency for the treatment of NSAIDs.

Hybrid chitosan/molecularly imprinted polymer hydrogel beads doped with iron for selective ibuprofen adsorption

Pharmaceutical pollutants are a group of emerging contaminants frequently found in water streams. In this study, the composite chitosan beads with incorporated molecularly imprinted polymers (monoliths or microparticles) and iron(III) hydroxide were fabricated to remove ibuprofen from aqueous solutions. The adsorptive properties were investigated in different conditions to evaluate the influence of solution pH, adsorbent dose, ibuprofen initial concentration, adsorption time, and temperature. The highest adsorption capacity (79.41 mg g-1), about twice as large as that for the chitosan beads without polymers (39.42 mg g-1), was obtained for the ones containing monoliths imprinted with ibuprofen. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 103.93 mg g-1 was obtained based on the experiments in optimal pH 5. The adsorption of ibuprofen on the hybrid hydrogel beads followed the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The process was found as endothermic and thermodynamically spontaneous. The adsorbent with a molecularly imprinted polymer retained its selectivity in the presence of other molecules. The imprinted cavities, chitosan functional groups, and iron hydroxide were presumably responsible for interactions with ibuprofen molecules. Additionally, the effectiveness of the adsorbent did not change significantly in real water samples and remained at a satisfactory level for up to four desorption-adsorption cycles.

Hydrophilic ZnO/C nanocomposites with superior adsorption, photocatalytic, and photo-enhanced antibacterial properties for synergistic water purification

Owing to the numerous potential applications of ZnO nanomaterials, the development of ZnO-based nanocomposites has become of great scientific interest in various fields. In this paper, we are reporting the fabrication of a series of ZnO/C nanocomposites through a simple "one-pot" calcination method under three different temperatures, 500 ℃, 600 ℃, and 700 ℃, with samples labeled as ZnO/C-500, -600, and -700, respectively. All samples exhibited adsorption capabilities and photon-activated catalytic and antibacterial properties, with the ZnO/C-700 sample showing superior performance among the three. The carbonaceous material in ZnO/C is key to expanding the optical absorption range and improving the charge separation efficiency of ZnO. The remarkable adsorption property of the ZnO/C-700 sample was demonstrated using Congo red dye, and is credited to its good hydrophilicity. It was also found to exhibit the most notable photocatalysis effect due to its high charge transfer efficiency. The hydrophilic ZnO/C-700 sample was also examined for antibacterial effects both in vitro (against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) and in vivo (against MSRA-infected rat wound model), and it was observed to exhibit synergistic killing performance under visible-light irradiation. A possible cleaning mechanism is proposed on the basis of our experimental results. Overall, this work presents a facile way of synthesizing ZnO/C nanocomposites with outstanding adsorption, photocatalysis, and antibacterial properties for the efficient treatment of organic and bacterial contaminants in wastewater.

Ion-Imprinted Polymeric Materials for Selective Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Solution

The introduction of selective recognition sites toward certain heavy metal ions (HMIs) is a great challenge, which has a major role when the separation of species with similar physicochemical features is considered. In this context, ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) developed based on the principle of molecular imprinting methodology, have emerged as an innovative solution. Recent advances in IIPs have shown that they exhibit higher selectivity coefficients than non-imprinted ones, which could support a large range of environmental applications starting from extraction and monitoring of HMIs to their detection and quantification. This review will emphasize the application of IIPs for selective removal of transition metal ions (including HMIs, precious metal ions, radionuclides, and rare earth metal ions) from aqueous solution by critically analyzing the most relevant literature studies from the last decade. In the first part of this review, the chemical components of IIPs, the main ion-imprinting technologies as well as the characterization methods used to evaluate the binding properties are briefly presented. In the second part, synthesis parameters, adsorption performance, and a descriptive analysis of solid phase extraction of heavy metal ions by various IIPs are provided.

The research progress, hotspots, challenges and outlooks of solid-phase denitrification process

Nitrogen pollution is one of the main reasons for water eutrophication. The difficulty of nitrogen removal in low-carbon wastewater poses a huge potential threat to the ecological environment and human health. As a clean biological nitrogen removal process, solid-phase denitrification (SPD) was proposed for long-term operation of low-carbon wastewater. In this paper, the progress, hotspots, and challenges of the SPD process based on different solid carbon sources (SCSs) are reviewed. Compared with synthetic SCS and natural SCS, blended SCSs have more application potential and have achieved pilot-scale application. Differences in SCSs will lead to changes in the enrichment of hydrolytic microorganisms and hydrolytic genes, which indirectly affect denitrification performance. Moreover, the denitrification performance of the SPD process is also affected by the physical and chemical properties of SCSs, pH of wastewater, hydraulic retention time, filling ratio, and temperature. In addition, the strengthening of the SPD process is an inevitable trend. The strengthening measures including SCSs modification and coupled electrochemical technology are regarded as the current research hotspots. It is worth noting that the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic has led to the increase of disinfection by-products and antibiotics in wastewater, which makes the SPD process face challenges. Finally, this review proposes prospects to provide a theoretical basis for promoting the efficient application of the SPD process and coping with the challenge of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Molecularly Imprinted Magnetic Nanocomposite Based on Carboxymethyl Dextrin for Removal of Ciprofloxacin Antibiotic from Contaminated Water

Broad-spectrum antibiotics from the fluoroquinolone family have emerged as prominent water contaminants, among other pharmaceutical pollutants. In the present study, an antibacterial magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) composite was successfully fabricated using carboxy methyl dextrin grafted to poly(aniline-co-meta-phenylenediamine) in the presence of Fe₃O₄/CuO nanoparticles and ciprofloxacin antibiotic. The characteristics of obtained materials were investigated using FTIR, XRD, VSM, TGA, EDX, FE-SEM, zeta potential, and BETanalyses. Afterward, the MMIP's antibacterial activity and adsorption effectiveness for removing ciprofloxacin from aqueous solutions were explored. The results of the antibacterial tests showed that MMIP had an antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli, a Gram-negative pathogen (16 mm), and Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive pathogen (22 mm). Adsorption efficacy was evaluated under a variety of experimental conditions, including solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and initial concentration. The maximum adsorption capacity (Q_max) of the MMIP for ciprofloxacin was determined to be 1111.1 mg/g using 3 mg of MMIP, with an initial concentration of 400 mg/L of ciprofloxacin at pH 7, within 15 min, and agitated at 25 °C, and the experimental adsorption results were well-described by the Freundlich isotherm model. The adsorption kinetic data were well represented by the pseudo-second-order model. Electrostatic interaction, cation exchange, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonding were mostly able to adsorb the majority of the ciprofloxacin onto the MMIP. Adsorption-desorption experiments revealed that the MMIP could be retrieved and reused with no noticeable reduction in adsorption efficacy after three consecutive cycles.

Selective Separation of Thyroid-Hormone-Receptor-Binding Substances Using Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

To date, an identification protocol for endocrine disruptors that bind to the thyroid hormone receptor (TR) has not been established. A method for screening and identifying TR-binding substances is highly required due to the existence of unknown TR-binding substances from the environment. Here, we conceived a chromatographic method using a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) to create a novel screening protocol for the endocrine disruptors. A receptor-imitating MIP was prepared using N-acetylthyroxine (AcetylT4) and 4-vinylpyridine as a pseudo-template and a functional monomer, respectively, based on the existing molecular recognition mechanism of the TR. The receptor-imitating MIP provided molecular recognition ability for all the TR-binding substances that were employed in this study. The prepared MIPs were packed into a high-performance liquid chromatography column for the simultaneous analysis of TR-binding and non-binding substances. The former was strongly retained, while the latter was not. The presence or absence of TR-binding/non-binding activity resulted in successful dichotomous separation. Additionally, the surface imprinting technique was applied to improve the separation performance of the MIP packing material. MIP-coated uniformly sized silica-based particles of 5 μm were successfully prepared, and the MIP-coated silica column enabled more efficient dichotomous separation of TR-binding and non-binding substances.

Surface ion-imprinted brewer's spent grain with low template loading for selective uranyl ions adsorption from simulated wastewater

Efficient removal of uranyl ions from wastewater requires excellent selectivity of the adsorbents. Herein, we report a new strategy using a high monomer/template molar ratio of 500:1 to prepare surface ion-imprinted brewer's spent grain (IIP-BSG) for selective U(VI) removal using binary functional monomers (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and diethyl vinylphosphonate) with high site accessibility and easy template removal. IIP-BSG exhibits a maximum U(VI) adsorption capacity of 165.7 mg/g, a high selectivity toward U(VI) in the presence of an excess amount of Eu(III) (Eu/U molar ratio = 20), a good tolerance of salinity, and a high reusability. In addition, mechanism studies have revealed electrostatic interaction and a coordination of uranyl ions by carboxyl and phosphoryl groups, the predominant contribution of high-energy (specific) sites during selective adsorption, and internal mass transfer as the rate-controlling step of U(VI) adsorption. Furthermore, IIP-BSG shows great potentials to separate U(VI) from lanthanides in simulated nuclear wastewater (pH₀ = 3.5) and selectively concentrate U(VI) from simulated mine water (pH₀ = 7.1). This study proves that the ion-imprinting effect can be achieved using a very low template amount with reduced production cost and secondary pollution, which benefits large-scale promotion of the ion-imprinted materials for selective uranyl ions removal.

Tailored-designed material for the preconcentration of Cd(II) on glycidyl methacrylate-based ion-imprinted polymer for flame atomic absorption for trace determination in real samples: multivariate optimization

A new Cd(II)-imprinting polymer was synthesised based on glycidyl methacrylate (Fe₃O₄@GMA@IIP) and employed to develop a dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction method for the preconcentration prior to the determination of Cd(II) from the environmental samples. A central composite design (CCD) based on response surface methodology was used for optimization of the process variables and the material shows the promising saturation adsorption capacity of 28.21 mg g^-1 under the optimum pH of 4.9 within 15.2 min at saturation concentration 914 μg mL^-1. The experimental data were well described by Sips isotherm model and Brouers-Sotolongo fractal kinetic model that indicated the surface heterogeneity and involvement of both chemisorption and physisorption process. Thermodynamic results documented the endothermic and spontaneous nature of adsorption. The sorbent manifest the economic feasibility maintaining its sorption efficiency after the regeneration by 1 M HNO₃ and reusability up to 6 adsorption/desorption cycles. The developed method exhibited the preconcentration factor of 30 and a high degree of tolerance for matrix ions. Limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were calculated as 3.054 and 10.182 μg L^-1 respectively. The developed method was validated by the standard reference material and spiking addition method in real samples, and obtained results showed good agreement in accordance with spiking values. The ease of magnetic separation, high selectivity, good adsorption capacity and faster kinetics made this material a promising candidate for Cd(II) determination in various food and aqueous samples.

Generic imprinted fiber array strategy for high-throughput and ultrasensitive simultaneous determination of multiple neonicotinoids

Herein, a new generic fiber array based on molecular imprinting solid-phase microextraction (MIP-SPME) technology, was described to enrich trace multiple neonicotinoids with high flux from the food matrix. To begin with adsorption experiments coupled with theoretical calculations provided universal means for selecting the preferred template molecule clothianidin (CLT). Results demonstrated that the CLT-MIP fiber array exhibited significantly superior enrichment ability of 1189-2356-folds for six neonicotinoids compared with two kinds of commercial fiber arrays. Furthermore, the practicability of the CLT-MIP fiber array was verified by simultaneously determining multiple neonicotinoids in tea and honey samples. The CLT-MIP fiber array showed a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.03-0.58 μg/L for six neonicotinoids. The method also exhibited satisfactory recoveries ranging from 85.4% to 116.8% with RSD (n = 3) less than 8.8%. The imprinted fiber array has the advantages of high-throughput, predominant reproducibility, and accurate quantitation multi-component, and it may open up a new mean to efficiently enrich high-throughput and simultaneously detect multiple compounds from food samples.

A recognition strategy combining effective boron affinity technology and surface imprinting to prepare highly selective and easily recyclable polymer membrane for separation of drug molecule

Cellulose acetate membrane (CAM) has become one of the most widely used membrane materials by virtue of stability and hydrophilicity. In this work, to achieve the aim of selective recognition and separation of drug molecule shikimic acid (SA), an effective recognition tactics was proposed by combining boron affinity technology with surface imprinting strategy based on cellulose acetate membrane with low price and biocompatibility. The supporting CAM material was prepared through the phase inversion technique by continuous adjustment of different factors including solvent type and kinds of pore-forming agents, and the optimal CAM with multistage structure and highly porosity was applied for the imprinting of SA. Then the imprinted polymer membrane (MIPs-CAM) was developed via boron affinity surface imprinting polymerization. Various methods (FT-IR, UV-vis, SEM, XPS, AFM and TGA) were used to characterize the structure, morphology, elemental composition, surface roughness and thermal property of the obtained membrane. The as-prepared MIPs-CAM showed homogeneous and abundant imprinted layer, good thermal stability. The batch adsorption results showed that the MIPs-CAM had fast adsorption kinetics, specific recognition ability, and the adsorption capacity could obtain 63.598 mg g^-1, which was two times higher than that of non-imprinted membrane (NIPs-CAM). The adsorption isotherms conformed to the Langmuir isotherm and the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of MIPs-CAM still reached 85% of the initial result after five cycles. The experimental results revealed that the molecularly imprinted membrane possessed the advantages of high selectivity and easy recovery compared with the traditional molecular imprinted polymers for SA separation. These results indicate that boron affinity MIPs-CAM with high performance will provide a promising platform for the separation and purification of other cis-diol drug molecules from environmental resources.

Green Chemistry and Molecularly Imprinted Membranes

Technological progress has made chemistry assume a role of primary importance in our daily life. However, the worsening of the level of environmental pollution is increasingly leading to the realization of more eco-friendly chemical processes due to the advent of green chemistry. The challenge of green chemistry is to produce more and better while consuming and rejecting less. It represents a profitable approach to address environmental problems and the new demands of industrial competitiveness. The concept of green chemistry finds application in several material syntheses such as organic, inorganic, and coordination materials and nanomaterials. One of the different goals pursued in the field of materials science is the application of GC for producing sustainable green polymers and membranes. In this context, extremely relevant is the application of green chemistry in the production of imprinted materials by means of its combination with molecular imprinting technology. Referring to this issue, in the present review, the application of the concept of green chemistry in the production of polymeric materials is discussed. In addition, the principles of green molecular imprinting as well as their application in developing greenificated, imprinted polymers and membranes are presented. In particular, green actions (e.g., the use of harmless chemicals, natural polymers, ultrasound-assisted synthesis and extraction, supercritical CO2, etc.) characterizing the imprinting and the post-imprinting process for producing green molecularly imprinted membranes are highlighted.

Graphene-derived antibacterial nanocomposites for water disinfection: Current and future perspectives

Antimicrobial nanomaterials provide numerous opportunities for the synthesis of next-generation sustainable water disinfectants. Using the keywords graphene and water disinfection and graphene antibacterial activity, a detailed search of the Scopus database yielded 198 and 1433 studies on using graphene for water disinfection applications and graphene antibacterial activity in the last ten years, respectively. Graphene family nanomaterials (GFNs) have emerged as effective antibacterial agents. The current innovations in graphene-, graphene oxide (GO)-, reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-, and graphene quantum dot (GQD)-based nanocomposites for water disinfection, including their functionalization with semiconductor photocatalysts and metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, have been thoroughly discussed in this review. Furthermore, their novel application in the fabrication of 3D porous hydrogels, thin films, and membranes has been emphasized. The physicochemical and structural properties affecting their antibacterial efficiency, such as sheet size, layer number, shape, edges, smoothness/roughness, arrangement mode, aggregation, dispersibility, and surface functionalization have been highlighted. The various mechanisms involved in GFN antibacterial action have been reviewed, including the mechanisms of membrane stress, ROS-dependent and -independent oxidative stress, cell wrapping/trapping, charge transfer, and interaction with cellular components. For safe applications, the potential biosafety and biocompatibility of GFNs in aquatic environments are emphasized. Finally, the current limitations and future perspectives are discussed. This review may provide ideas for developing efficient and practical solutions using graphene-, GO-, rGO-, and GQD-based nanocomposites in water disinfection by rationally employing their unique properties.

Remediation of pharmaceuticals from contaminated water by molecularly imprinted polymers: a review

The release of pharmaceuticals into the environment induces adverse effects on the metabolism of humans and other living species, calling for advanced remediation methods. Conventional removal methods are often non-selective and cause secondary contamination. These issues may be partly solved by the use of recently-developped adsorbents such as molecularly imprinted polymers. Here we review the synthesis and application of molecularly imprinted polymers for removing pharmaceuticals in water. Molecularly imprinted polymers are synthesized via several multiple-step polymerization methods. Molecularly imprinted polymers are potent adsorbents at the laboratory scale, yet their efficiency is limited by template leakage and polymer quality. Adsorption performance of multi-templated molecularly imprinted polymers depends on the design of wastewater treatment plants, pharmaceutical consumption patterns and the population serviced by these wastewater treatment plants.

A comprehensive review on preparation, functionalization and recent applications of nanofiber membranes in wastewater treatment

The direct discharge of significant amounts of polluted water into water bodies causes adverse ecological and human health effects. This severe deterioration in water quality creates significant challenges to meet the growing demand for clean water. Therefore, the world urgently needs environmentally friendly advanced technology to overcome this global crisis. In this regard, nanofiber-based membrane filtration is a promising technique in wastewater remediation because of their huge surface area, extremely porous structure, amenable pore size/pore size distribution, variety of material choices, and flexibility to modification with other functional materials. However, despite their unique properties, fouling, poor mechanical properties, shrinkage, and deformation are major drawbacks of nanofiber membranes for treating wastewater. This review presents a comprehensive overview of nanofiber membranes' fabrication and function in water purification applications as well as providing novel approaches to overcoming/alleviating the mentioned disadvantages. The review first presents nanofiber membrane preparation methods, focusing on electrospinning as a versatile and viable technique alongside discussing the parameters controlling nanofiber morphology. Afterward, the functionalization of nanofiber membranes by combining them with other nanomaterials, such as metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, metal-organic frameworks, and biomolecules, were demonstrated and discussed. In addition, nanofiber membranes functionalized with microorganisms were highlighted. Finally, we introduced and discussed in detail the most relevant and recent advances in nanofiber applications in wastewater treatment in the context of removing different pollutants (e.g., heavy metals, nutrients, radioactive elements, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products, dyes, and pesticides). Moreover, the promising antimicrobial ability of nanofiber membranes in removing microorganisms from wastewater has been fully underscored. We believe this comprehensive review could provide researchers with preliminary data and guide both researchers and producers engaged in the nanofiber membrane industry, letting them focus on the research gaps in wastewater treatment.

Green Aspects in Molecularly Imprinted Polymers by Biomass Waste Utilization

Molecular Imprinting Polymer (MIP) technology is a technique to design artificial receptors with a predetermined selectivity and specificity for a given analyte, which can be used as ideal materials in various application fields. In the last decades, MIP technology has gained much attention from the scientific world as summarized in several reviews with this topic. Furthermore, green synthesis in chemistry is nowadays one of the essential aspects to be taken into consideration in the development of novel products. In accordance with this feature, the MIP community more recently devoted considerable research and development efforts on eco-friendly processes. Among other materials, biomass waste, which is a big environmental problem because most of it is discarded, can represent a potential sustainable alternative source in green synthesis, which can be addressed to the production of high-value carbon-based materials with different applications. This review aims to focus and explore in detail the recent progress in the use of biomass waste for imprinted polymers preparation. Specifically, different types of biomass waste in MIP preparation will be exploited: chitosan, cellulose, activated carbon, carbon dots, cyclodextrins, and waste extracts, describing the approaches used in the synthesis of MIPs combined with biomass waste derivatives.

(Macro)Molecular Imprinting of Proteins on PCL Electrospun Scaffolds

Biological recognition sites are very useful for biomedical purposes and, more specifically, for polymeric scaffolds. However, synthetic polymers are not capable of providing specific biological recognition sites. To solve this inconvenience, functionalization of biological moieties is typically performed, oftentimes via peptide binding. In this sense, the main task is capturing the biological complexity of a protein. This study proposes a possible alternative solution to this challenge. Our approach is based on the combination of molecular imprinting (MI) and electrospinning processes. We propose here an alternative MI approach with polymeric structures, instead of using cross-linkers and monomers as conventionally performed. Different PCL-protein scaffolds were produced via electrospinning before performing MI. Gelatin, collagen, and elastin were used as proteins. Results evidenced that the MI process conducted with PCL electrospun membranes was carried out with ionic interactions between the desired molecules and the recognition sites formed. In addition, it has been proved that MI was more efficient when using gelatin as a template. This approach opens a new stage in the development of recognition sites in scaffolds obtained with synthetic polymers and their application for biomedical purposes.

Selective adsorption of ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin from a binary system using lignin-based adsorbents: Quantitative analysis, adsorption mechanisms, and structure-activity relationship

A series of actinia-shaped lignin-based adsorbents (LNAEs) featuring lignin (LN) as the core and grafted poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as the tentacle were designed and fabricated. Two fluoroquinolones (FQs) with similar molecular structures, ofloxacin (OFL) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), were used as targets to study the selective adsorption performance of LNAEs associated with the structural effects of the LN-based adsorbents in FQs binary aqueous system. The adsorption of the two FQs by LNAEs complied with the competitive Langmuir isothermal model, and showed selective removal of CIP over OFL due to the additional negative charge-assisted hydrogen bond (CAHB) formed between the carboxyl group of LNAEs and the secondary amino group of CIP, in addition to the effects of electrostatic attraction and normal hydrogen bonds, according to quantitative studies and density functional theory analysis. A binary nonlinear model based on phenomenological theory was applied to study the effects of PAA branched-chain length and distribution on the selective adsorption performance of the LN-based adsorbents. Accordingly, the branched-chain distribution played a more important role and higher distribution density of branched PAA could expose more adsorption sites on LNAEs' surface and improve the adsorptive selectivity. This study offers a well understanding of the structure-activity relationship of the surface grafting-modified adsorbents in binary pollutant systems and fundamental guidance for the exploitation and design of novel and efficient adsorbents.
