Atomistic insights into structure evolution and mechanical property of calcium silicate hydrates influenced by nuclear waste caesium

Investigation of waste alkali-activated cementing material using municipal solid waste incineration fly ash and dravite as precursors: Mechanisms, performance, and on-site application

The proper treatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) is a crucial concern due to its hazardous nature and potential environmental harm. To address this issue, this study innovatively utilized dravite and black liquor to solidify MSWIFA. The semi-dry pressing method was employed, resulting in the production of waste alkali-activated cementing material (WACM). This material demonstrated impressive compressive and flexural strength, reaching 45.89 MPa and 6.55 MPa respectively, and effectively solidified heavy metal ions (Pb, Cr, Cu, Cd, and Zn). The leaching concentrations of these ions decreased from 27.15, 10.36, 8.94, 7.00, and 104.4 mg/L to 0.13, 1.05, 0.29, 0.06, and 12.28 mg/L, respectively. The strength of WACM increased by 3 times compared to conventionally produced materials. Furthermore, WACM exhibited excellent long-term performance, with acceptable heavy metal leaching and minimal mechanical degradation. Experimental and theoretical analyses revealed the heavy metal solidification mechanisms, including chemical binding, ion substitution and physical encapsulation. Finally, the on-site application of WACM confirmed its feasibility in meeting both environmental and strength requirements.

Effects of EDTA on the leaching behaviors of Cs(I) and Co(II) from cement waste forms

Cementation is extensively employed for immobilizing radionuclides in low- and intermediate-level radioactive wastes generated during the decommissioning of nuclear power plants. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), used as a decontamination agent during the decommissioning process, can be introduced into the cement waste form containing radionuclides. This study investigated the effects of the EDTA present in simulated radioactive decommissioning wastes on the leaching behaviors of Co and Cs immobilized in the cement waste form. Co leaching was facilitated by the formation of highly mobile Co-EDTA complexes. However, Cs leaching was impeded by the competition for leaching with other metal-EDTA complexes. Moreover, the EDTA-induced carbonated layer with a dense pore structure played a crucial role as a retardation barrier for the Cs leaching. The calcite contents of the samples with 8 wt% EDTA were approximately three times higher than those of the samples without EDTA. The introduced EDTA affected the leaching behaviors of both Co and Cs, as well as the microstructure evolution of the cement waste form. Nevertheless, the addition of EDTA had a relatively low positive effect on the efficiency of Cs immobilization, but also an obvious negative effect on the efficiency of Co immobilization, regardless of the concentration of EDTA. Finally, an EDTA dosage of 1 wt% in the cement waste forms containing Co or Cs is suggested as a potential waste acceptance criterion for solidified low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste.

Deep insight on mechanism and contribution of As(V) removal by thermal modification waste concrete powder

Expanding the utilization strategy of waste concrete powder (WCP) is conducive to minimizing the environmental burden caused by construction & demolition wastes (C&DW). In this study, WCP prepared in the laboratory was thermally treated and used to remove As(V) from wastewater. Batch adsorption tests were implemented to explore the influence factors such as modification temperature (0-850 °C), pH (1.00-12.00), dosage (2-50 g/L), co-coexisting ions (SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, Cl^- and PO₄^3-) and temperature (25-45 °C). Various methods including spectroscopic tests, Rietveld refinement and sequential extraction process were employed to examine the mechanisms and their contribution to As(V) removal. Results show that the As(V) removal capacity of WCP was slightly enhanced after treatment at 200 °C, the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir model could describe the adsorption process well. The maximum uptake capacity for As(V) calculated by Langmuir model at 25, 35 and 45 °C were 31.89, 25.56 and 17.42 mg/g respectively, and the removal rate reached a maximum of 95.37% (C₀ = 100 mg/L). Thermodynamically, the As(V) elimination was exothermic and spontaneous. The ettringite produced by rehydration of WCP proved to be essential for As(V) removal. Electrostatic attraction, precipitation, complexation and ion exchange were identified to be the main mechanisms of As(V) adsorption. This study confirmed the potential of WCP in removing As(V) from wastewater and provided a new insight into the removal mechanisms.
