Novel and wet-resilient cellulose nanofiber cryogels with tunable porosity and improved mechanical strength for methyl orange dyes removal

Preparation of ultra-light, highly compressible, and biodegradable chitosan porous materials for heavy metal adsorption, dye adsorption and oil-water separation

Chitosan materials are much important in adsorption, separation and water treatment due to their hydrophilicity, biodegradability and easy functionalization. However, they were difficult to form structural materials, which limited its application in engineering. In this paper, a new type of chitosan porous materials was prepared with two-step strategy involving the freezing crosslinking of chitosan with glutaraldehyde to form cryogels, and their subsequent reduction with NaBH4 to transform CN bonds into CN bonds, resulting in remarkable improvement of mechanical property. That is, the strength remained almost unchanged after 80 % deformation. The abundant -NH2 and -OH on the surface of materials, as well as the unique pore structure from cryogels, gave relatively high adsorption capacity for metals and dyes (88.73 ± 4.25 mg·g-1 for Cu(II) and 3261.05 ± 36.10 mg·g-1 for Congo red). The surface hydrophilicity of materials made it possible for selective water permeation with over 95 % separation efficiency for oil-water mixtures. In addition, simple hydrophobic modification using bromotetradecane achieved selective oil permeation with over 96 % separation efficiency for oil-water mixtures. This study not only provides a new strategy to endow chitosan materials with excellent mechanical property, large adsorption capacity and good oil-water separation performance, but also offers environmentally friendly materials for sewage treatment applications.

"Green" electrostatic droplet-assisted forming cellulose microspheres with excellent structural controllability and stability for efficient Cr(VI) removal

This study presents a novel and environmentally friendly method for producing cellulose microspheres (CM) with controllable morphology and size using electrostatic droplets. The traditional droplet method for CM production requires complex equipment and harmful reagents. In contrast, the proposed method offers a simple electrostatic droplet approach to fabricate CM10 at 10 kV, which exhibited a smaller volume, linear microscopic morphology, and a larger specific surface area, with a 36.60 % improvement compared to CM0 (prepared at 0 kV). CM10 also demonstrated excellent underwater structural stability, recovering in just 0.5 s, and exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) at 190.16 mg/g, a 72.15 % improvement over CM0. This enhanced adsorption capacity can be attributed to the unique structure of CM10 and the introduction of more amino groups. Moreover, CM10 displayed good cyclic adsorption capacity and high dynamic adsorption efficiency, making it highly suitable for practical applications. CM10 exhibited remarkable adsorption capacity, stability, and practical value in treating Cr(VI) wastewater. This work proposes a simple and eco-friendly method for producing CM with excellent structural controllability and stability, providing an effective route for wastewater treatment.

Modulation of the properties of starch gels by a one-step extrusion modification method based on Ca2+-citric acid synergistic crosslinking

Citric acid (CA) is a green and safe food-grade crosslinking agent for starch, but its high crosslinking temperature limits its application. In this study, a "one-step" extrusion modification method based on Ca2+-esterification synergistic crosslinking was proposed for the preparation of high gel performance crosslinked starch at low temperatures (90 °C). The linear and nonlinear rheological properties of crosslinked starch were comprehensively characterized, and the enhancement effect of synergistic crosslinking reactions on starch gel properties was quantitatively studied. The results show that the elastic modulus of the synergistically crosslinked starch (SC-0.5Ca2+, G' = 3116 ± 36) was significantly increased by 879 % compared to the elastic modulus of starch without synergistically crosslinked modification (SC, G' = 318 ± 9). The elastic modulus of starch gels can be adjusted by changing the ion concentration. Nonlinear rheological Lissajous curve analysis results show that the synergistic crosslinked gel system has a stronger anti-deformation ability. In addition, the honeycomb porous structure and smaller pore size distribution of the synergistic crosslinked gels were characterized using scanning SEM. The XPS, FTIR and XRD results suggest that the synergistic crosslinking enhancement effect may involve various molecular forces such as electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding and ester bonding.

Robust functionalized cellulose-based porous composite for efficient capture and ultra-fast desorption of aqueous heavy metal pollution

The heavy metal pollution control industry requires convenient and cost-effective solutions to address complex aqueous environment. Adsorption method can be an effective strategy to realize these goals. Considering the importance of environmental and sustainable development strategies, there is an urgent need to develop efficient, green and non-toxic heavy metal adsorbents. In this work, a robust aminated cellulose-based porous adsorbent (PGPW) was developed from delignified wood and amino-rich polymer using a solvent-free, mild, simple and efficient preparation method. Such adsorbent exhibited excellent adsorption capacity (188.68 mg g-1) for Cu(II), and its adsorption behavior was consistent with pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Notably, PGPW with superior compressibility could be squeezed to achieve rapid desorption and reach equilibrium within 5 min, while still retaining 87 % adsorption efficiency after 50 cycles. In addition, PGPW showed remarkable selectivity towards various coexisting ionic systems and demonstrated a considerable adsorption capacity in natural water applications. The adsorption mechanism of heavy metal ions on porous adsorption material was elucidated. This approach provides a simple, gentle and sustainable strategy for preparing functionalized wood-based composites with efficient adsorption and ultra-fast desorption of heavy metal ions.

Enhancement of Starch Gel Properties Using Ionic Synergistic Multiple Crosslinking Extrusion Modification

Crosslinking is a promising method to modulate the gel properties of food-grade starch gels. Still, the poor crosslinking effect of a single type of crosslinker limits the application of this method in starch gel modification. In this study, an Ca2+ synergistic multiple crosslinking modification method was proposed to prepare crosslinked starches with good gel properties and setting. The rheological properties of the samples were tested. The modified sample (SC-Ca-N3, G' = 1347 ± 27) showed a 79% improvement compared to the starch without synergistic crosslinking modification (SC-N, G' = 752 ± 6). The elastic modulus of starch gels can be adjusted by changing the degree of the crosslinking reaction. The results of nonlinear rheological Lissajous curve analysis showed that the synergistically crosslinked gel system strongly resisted deformation. In addition, the microstructure of the modified samples was characterized using scanning electron microscopy. The XPS, FTIR, and XRD results indicated that multiple molecular forces participate in the synergistic crosslinking reaction.

Incorporation of Cellulose-Based Aerogels into Textile Structures

Given their exceptional attributes, aerogels are viewed as a material with immense potential. Being a natural polymer, cellulose offers the advantage of being both replenishable and capable of breaking down naturally. Cellulose-derived aerogels encompass the replenish ability, biocompatible nature, and ability to degrade naturally inherent in cellulose, along with additional benefits like minimal weight, extensive porosity, and expansive specific surface area. Even with increasing appreciation and acceptance, the undiscovered possibilities of aerogels within the textiles sphere continue to be predominantly uninvestigated. In this context, we outline the latest advancements in the study of cellulose aerogels' formulation and their diverse impacts on textile formations. Drawing from the latest studies, we reviewed the materials used for the creation of various kinds of cellulose-focused aerogels and their properties, analytical techniques, and multiple functionalities in relation to textiles. This comprehensive analysis extensively covers the diverse strategies employed to enhance the multifunctionality of cellulose-based aerogels in the textiles industry. Additionally, we focused on the global market size of bio-derivative aerogels, companies in the industry producing goods, and prospects moving forward.

Comparison between nanocellulose-polyethylenimine composites synthesis methods towards multiple water pollutants removal: A review

Nanocellulose/polyethylenimine composites have attracted growing attention due to their versatility as new materials for application in different fields. Water remediation is one of the traditional applications of these composites and their investigation as adsorbents for single water pollutants is well established. However, most water resources such as rivers, lakes, and even oceans contain complex mixtures of pollutants. Despite several recently published reviews on water purification technology, they only focused on these material as single pollutant removers and hardly mentioned their capacity to simultaneously recover multiple pollutants. Therefore, there is still a gap in the archived literature considering nanocellulose/polyethylenimine composites targeting water remediation with multiple water pollutants. In this review, methods for synthesizing such composites are classified and compared according to the mechanism of reactions, such as chemical crosslinking and physical adsorption, while outlining advantages and limitations. Then, the water pollutants mainly targeted by those composites are discussed in detail to expound the relationship between the synthesis method and the type and adsorption capacity. Finally, the last section presents challenges and opportunities of these nanocellulose/polyethylenimine composites as emerging sorbents for sustainable multiple water pollutants purification technologies. This review aims to lay out the basis for future developments of these composites for multiple water pollutants.

Cellulose/inorganic nanoparticles-based nano-biocomposite for abatement of water and wastewater pollutants

Nanostructured materials offer a significant role in wastewater treatment with diminished capital and operational expense, low dose, and pollutant selectivity. Specifically, the nanocomposites of cellulose with inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) have drawn a prodigious interest because of the extraordinary cellulose properties, high specific surface area, and pollutant selectivity of NPs. Integrating inorganic NPs with cellulose biopolymers for wastewater treatment is a promising advantage for inorganic NPs, such as colloidal stability, agglomeration prevention, and easy isolation of magnetic material after use. This article presents a comprehensive overview of water treatment approaches following wastewater remediation by green and environmentally friendly cellulose/inorganic nanoparticles-based bio-nanocomposites. The functionalization of cellulose, functionalization mechanism, and engineered hybrid materials were thoroughly discussed. Moreover, we also highlighted the purification of wastewater through the composites of cellulose/inorganic nanoparticles via adsorption, photocatalytic and antibacterial approach.

Freezing-triggered gelation of quaternized chitosan reinforced with microfibrillated cellulose for highly efficient removal of bilirubin

The highly efficient removal of bilirubin from blood by hemoperfusion for liver failure therapy remains a challenge in the clinical field due to the low adsorption capacity and poor hemocompatibility of currently used carbon-based adsorbents. Polysaccharide-based cryogels seem to be promising candidates for hemoperfusion adsorbents owing to their inherited excellent hemocompatibility. However, the weak mechanical strength and relatively low adsorption capacity of polysaccharide-based cryogels limited their application in bilirubin adsorption. In this work, we presented a freezing-triggered strategy to fabricate QCS/MFC cryogels, which were formed by quaternized chitosan (QCS) crosslinked with divinylsulfonyl methane (BVSM) and reinforced with microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). Ice crystal exclusions triggered the chemical crosslinking to generate the cryogels with dense pore walls. The obtained QCS/MFC cryogels were characterized by FTIR, SEM, stress-strain test, and hemocompatibility assay, which exhibited interconnected macroporous structures, excellent shape-recovery and mechanical performance, and outstanding blood compatibility. Due to the quaternary ammonium functionalization of chitosan, the QCS/MFC showed a high adsorption capacity of 250 mg g^-1 and a short adsorption equilibrium time of 3 h. More importantly, the QCS/MFC still exhibited high adsorption efficiency (over 49.7%) in the presence of 40 g L^-1 albumin. Furthermore, the QCS/MFC could also maintain high dynamic adsorption efficiency in self-made hemoperfusion devices. This facile approach provides a new avenue to develop high-performance hemoperfusion adsorbents for bilirubin removal, showing great promise for the translational therapy of hyperbilirubinemia.
