Theoretical and experimental insights into the mechanisms of C6/C6 PFPiA degradation by dielectric barrier discharge plasma

Mechanistic exploration of polytetrafluoroethylene thermal plasma gasification through multiscale simulation coupled with experimental validation

The ever-growing quantities of persistent Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) wastes, along with consequential ecological and human health concerns, stimulate the need for alternative PTFE disposal method. The central research challenge lies in elucidating the decomposition mechanism of PTFE during high-temperature waste treatment. Here, we propose the PTFE microscopic thermal decomposition pathways by integrating plasma gasification experiments with multi-scale simulations strategies. Molecular dynamic simulations reveal a pyrolysis-oxidation & chain-shortening-deep defluorination (POCD) degradation pathway in an oxygen atmosphere, and an F abstraction-hydrolysis-deep defluorination (FHD) pathway in a steam atmosphere. Density functional theory computations demonstrate the vital roles of 1O2 and ·H radicals in the scission of PTFE carbon skeleton, validating the proposed pathways. Experimental results confirm the simulation results and show that up to 80.12% of gaseous fluorine can be recovered through plasma gasification within 5 min, under the optimized operating conditions determined through response surface methodology.

Synergistic catalysis induced by a multi-component system constructed by DBD plasma combined with α-Fe2O3/FeVO4/HCP and peroxymonosulfate for gatifloxacin removal

The dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) multi-component system containing plasma, α-Fe₂O₃/FeVO₄, and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with high catalytic activity was successfully constructed. Thereinto, α-Fe₂O₃/FeVO₄ was loaded on the honeycomb ceramic plate (HCP) surface (α-Fe₂O₃/FeVO₄/HCP) and placed under the water surface below the discharge area. The catalytic activity was evaluated by the removal rate of gatifloxacin (GAT), and the DBD+α-Fe₂O₃/FeVO₄+PMS system exhibited the optimal catalytic activity. The enhanced catalytic activity can be attributed to the fact that the occurrence of synergistic catalysis that simultaneously includes plasma oxidation, photocatalysis, PMS oxidation, O₃ catalysis, and Fenton reaction. The effect of various initial degradation parameters including input power, PMS dosage, pH, etc. On GAT removal was investigated. DBD+α-Fe₂O₃/FeVO₄+PMS system has a significant increase in the concentration of H₂O₂ and O₃, and the role played in the multi-component system was analyzed. The identification and analysis of organic matters during GAT degradation were visualized with the help of 3D EEMs. HPLC-MS and theoretical calculations identified the major intermediates and further deduced the possible GAT degradation pathways. Additionally, the acute toxicity of the major intermediates was predicted by the QSAR model. Finally, the possible mechanisms of synergistic catalysis to enhance catalytic activity were discussed based on the characteristics of several advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and the results of experimental and characterization. This work provides a feasible technical route and theoretical basis for wastewater treatment by plasma combined with other AOPs.

Multi-catalysis of glow discharge plasma coupled with FeS2 for synergistic removal of antibiotic

Fe-based composites improved the energy utilization efficiency of plasma for removing contaminants through multi-catalysis have received much attention. However, the energy efficiency and catalytic activity are compromised by the slow transformation from Fe (Ⅲ) to Fe (Ⅱ). Here, given the electron-donating ability of reducing sulfur species, as well as the acidic environment generated by FeS₂, single FeS₂ was introduced into the glow discharge plasma (GDP) reactor for the removal of tylosin (TYL). The results showed that a significant synergistic effect between FeS₂ and GDP improved the energy efficiency of plasma and the removal efficiency of TYL (99.7%). FeS₂ boosted the generation of radicals (·OH, ·O₂^-) and nonradicals (h⁺, e^-) rather than H₂O₂ and O₃, which played an important role in TYL abatement. Moreover, the electrons donating sulfur and iron species from FeS₂ can accelerate the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II), which was conducive to the generation of radicals. Besides, acid solution self-adjustment resulted from the oxidation of FeS₂ improved heterogeneous Fenton reaction, the oxidation potential of ·OH and adsorption of positive charged TYL. The plausible degradation pathways of TYL were proposed in GDP/FeS₂ system. In summary, enhanced removal of TYL was mainly attributed to the catalytic pathway altered by FeS₂ through high-energy electrons, photocatalysis, heterogeneous Fenton and O₃ catalysis in the GDP system simultaneously. The strategy of integrating GDP with FeS₂ proposed in this work is expected to offer a feasible and potential technique for organic wastewater treatment.

A review of recent studies on toxicity, sequestration, and degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

The fate, effects, and treatment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), an anthropogenic class of chemicals used in industrial and commercial production, are topics of great interest in recent research and news cycles. This interest stems from the ubiquity of PFAS in the global environment as well as their significant toxicological effects in humans and wildlife. Research on toxicity, sequestration, removal, and degradation of PFAS has grown rapidly, leading to a flood of valuable knowledge that can get swamped out in the perpetual rise in the number of publications. Selected papers from the Journal of Hazardous Materials between January 2018 and May 2022 on the toxicity, sequestration, and degradation of PFAS are reviewed in this article and made available as open-access publications for one year, in order to facilitate the distribution of critical knowledge surrounding PFAS. This review discusses routes of toxicity as observed in mammalian and cellular models, and the observed human health effects in exposed communities. Studies that evaluate of toxicity through in-silico approaches are highlighted in this paper. Removal of PFAS through modified carbon sorbents, nanoparticles, and anion exchange materials are discussed while comparing treatment efficiencies for different classes of PFAS. Finally, various biotic and abiotic degradation techniques, and the pathways and mechanisms involved are reviewed to provide a better understanding on the removal efficiencies and cost effectiveness of existing treatment strategies.
