Highly selective recovery of Ni(II) in neutral and acidic media using a novel Ni(II)-ion imprinted polymer

Rapid quantification of 2,4-dichlorophenol in river water samples using molecularly imprinted polymers coupled to ambient plasma mass spectrometry

Rapid quantification of environmental pollutants is important for water quality control and environmental monitoring. In this work, we report the development of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) obtained from poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) polymer. The synthesized materials were used for selective preconcentration of 2,4-dichlorophenol, a priority pollutant which creates a threat to public health. The structure of poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) was functionalized with 4-aminomethylpyridine (4-AMP) to incorporate pyridine groups presumably responsible for increased affinity towards 2,4-dichlorophenol. The synthesis was performed with different degree (10%, 20% and 30%) of 4-AMP functionalization to investigate the influence of pyridine group content on the final MIPs properties. The molecular imprinting process was conducted by amidation of polymers' anhydride groups with diethylenetriamine. Moreover, the experimental data indicated that maximum adsorption capacity was observed for the highest 4-AMP functionalization degree. Similarly, MIPs with the highest 4-AMP content proved to possess the highest selectivity towards the analyte. Finally, the functionalized MIPs were used to quantify 2,4-dichlorophenol by their direct introduction into a specially designed ambient mass spectrometry setup. The detection limits were improved significantly over the ones measured for pure analyte solution. The proposed analytical technique was used to quantify 2,4-dichlorophenol in river water and wastewater samples. Good recovery results were obtained, which proves that the method can be used for analysis of complex real-life samples.

Cr(VI) anion-imprinted polymer synthesized on mesoporous silicon via synergistic action of bifunctional monomers for precise identification and separation of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution by fixed-bed adsorption

The novel Cr(VI) anion-imprinted polymer (Cr(VI)-IIP) was prepared by a surface imprinting technique with bifunctional monomers pre-assembly system based on mesoporous silicon (SBA-15). The synthesized Cr(VI)-IIP was characterized by Fourier transmission infrared spectra (FT-IR), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray powder diffractometer, N₂ adsorption-desorption and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), proving to be with a highly ordered mesoporous structure, as well as favorable thermal stability. The saturated adsorption amount was 96.32 mg/g, which was 2.7 times higher than that of non-imprinted polymer (NIP). Kinetic experiments showed that the adsorption equilibrium state was obtained within 70 min. In addition, in the selectivity experiments, Cr(VI)-IIP exhibited strong specific recognition ability for Cr(VI) and could realize the separation of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) from an aqueous solution. The dynamic adsorption experiments exhibited that the dynamic adsorption efficiency of Cr(VI)-IIP was as high as 71.57%. Meanwhile, the dynamic regeneration experiments showed that the adsorption amount of Cr(VI)-IIP did not decrease significantly after repeating for five times. All of the findings suggested that Cr(VI)-IIP could achieve precise identification as well as efficient separation of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution.

Insight into the Mechanism of Cobalt-Nickel Separation Using DFT Calculations on Ethylenediamine-Modified Silica Gel

The separation of Co(II) and Ni(II) from leaching solution is gaining interest because Co(II) and Ni(II) are increasingly used in emerging strategic areas, such as power batteries. Herein, the surface of silica gel is functionalized with 1,2-ethylenediamine and used for the separation of Co(II) and Ni(II). The Co(II) removal efficiency of the modified silica is 80.2%, with a 4-fold improvement in the separation factor. The geometry, frequency, and electrostatic potential of the ethylenediamine modified silica gel (en/SG) are calculated. The corresponding properties of M²⁺ (M-Co, Ni) adsorbed on en/SG in an aqueous solution are simulated and analyzed. The results show that ethylenediamine tends to form [Men(H₂O)₄]²⁺ after binding to M²⁺, and the binding ability of Co(II) to ethylenediamine is stronger. Besides, the thermodynamic calculations show that en/SG has a more negative Gibbs free energy when absorbing Co(II) in aqueous solution, so en/SG is more inclined to bind with Co(II) preferentially. It is the difference in complexation ability between Ni, Co, and ethylenediamine that enlarges the difference in the original physical adsorption, thus strengthening the separation performance. This work will provide guidance for a rational design of high-performance nickel-cobalt adsorption materials.
