Spatiotemporal evolution of U and Th isotopes in a mine effluent highly polluted by Acid Mine Drainage (AMD)

Temporal and spatial evolution of different heavy metal fractions and correlation with environmental factors after prolonged acid mine drainage irrigation: A column experiment

Acid mine drainage (AMD) has global significance due to its low pH and elevated heavy metal content, which have received widespread attention. After AMD irrigation in mining areas, heavy metals are distributed among soil layers, but the influencing factors and mechanisms remain unclear. AMD contamination of surrounding soil is primarily attributed to surface runoff and irrigation and causes significant environmental degradation. A laboratory soil column experiment was conducted to investigate the temporal and spatial distribution of the heavy metals Cd and Cu, as well as the impact of key environmental factors on the migration and transformation of these heavy metals following long-term soil pollution by AMD. After AMD addition, the soil exhibited a significant increase in acidity, accompanied by notable alterations in various environmental parameters, including soil pH, Eh, Fe(II) content, and iron oxide content. Over time, Cd and Cu in the soil mainly existed in the exchangeable and carbonate-bound fractions. In spatial terms, exchangeable Cu increased with increasing depth. Pearson correlation analysis indicated significant negative correlations between pH and Cu, Cd, and Eh in pore water, as well as negative correlations between pH and the exchangeable fraction of Cd (F1), carbonate-bound fraction of Cd (F2), and exchangeable fraction of Cu (F1) in the solid phase. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between pH and the residual fraction of Cu (F5). Furthermore, the soil total Cd content exhibited a positive correlation with pyrophosphate-Fe (Fep) and dithionite-Fe (Fed), while CdF1, CdF2, total Cu, and CuF1 displayed positive correlations with Fep. Our findings indicate that the presence of AMD in soil leads to alterations in the chemical fractions of Cd and Cu, resulting in enhanced bioavailability. These results offer valuable insights for developing effective remediation strategies for soils near mining sites.

Inhibition of high sulfur on functional microorganisms and genes in slightly contaminated soil by cadmium and chromium

It is generally accepted that sulfur can passivate the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil, but it is not clear whether high sulfur in cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) contaminated soil has negative effect on soil microbial community and ecological function. In this study, total sulfur (TS) inhibited the Chao 1, Shannon, Phylogenetic diversity (Pd) of bacterial and Pd of fungi in slightly contaminated soil by Cd and Cr around pyrite. TS, total potassium, pH, total chromium, total cadmium, total nitrogen, soil organic matter were the predominant factors for soil microbial community; the contribution of TS in shaping bacterial and fungal communities ranked at first and fifth, respectively. Compared with the low sulfur group, the abundance of sulfur sensitive microorganisms Gemmatimonas, Pseudolabrys, MND1, and Schizothecium were decreased by 68.79-97.22% (p < 0.01) at high sulfur one; the carbon fixation, nitrogen cycling, phosphorus cycling and resistance genes abundance were significantly lower (p < 0.01) at the latter. Such variations were strongly and closely correlated to the suppression of energy metabolism (M00009, M00011, M00086) and carbon fixation (M00173, M00376) functional module genes abundance in the high sulfur group. Collectively, high sulfur significantly suppressed the abundances of functional microorganisms and functional genes in slightly contaminated soil with Cd and Cr, possibly through inhibition of energy metabolism and carbon fixation of functional microorganisms. This study provided new insights into the environmental behavior of sulfur in slightly contaminated soil with Cd and Cr.

Application of radiological assessment as water quality criterion for effluent release in a Brazilian uranium mine

Uranium mining causes several radiological impacts on the surrounding environment, notably in the water bodies, mainly due to the release of long half-life radionuclides from the ²³⁸U and ²³²Th series. The Ore Treatment Unit, an old uranium mine undergoing decommissioning, has three points of liquid effluent release (#014, #025, and #076). For current study, 78 samples of water were collected at #014, 33 samples at #025, and 63 samples at #076. The radionuclides were analyzed by gross alpha count, gross beta count, and by arsenazo spectrophotometry. Analyses were carried out using the radiological water quality criterion established by World Health Organization and other organizations, together with the Brazilian legislation, to assess if the released effluents may be used unrestrictedly by the individuals of the public. At #014, the mean values of activity concentration (AC), in Bq·L^-1, were as follows: U_nat = 0.107, ²²⁶Ra = 0.035, ²¹⁰Pb = 0.031, ²³²Th = 0.007, and ²²⁸Ra = 0.049. At #025 the mean values of AC, in Bq·L^-1, were as follows: U_nat = 0.086, ²²⁶Ra = 0.015, ²¹⁰Pb = 0.028, ²³²Th = 0.006, and ²²⁸Ra = 0.032. Finally, at point #076, the mean AC values, in Bq·L^-1, were as follows: U_nat = 3.624, ²²⁶Ra = 0.074, ²¹⁰Pb = 0.054, ²³²Th = 0.013, and ²²⁸Ra = 0.069. The current study showed that natural radionuclides were not in secular equilibrium. Despite uranium presented its values outside the limits of guidance levels, it can be state that the unrestricted use of effluents released in the three water bodies is authorized from the radiological point of view. In terms of dose rate, the releases at three points were within the radiological limits of potability. On the other hand, in an additional analysis, #76 presented chemical toxicity above the authorized value, pointing the need of restricted use of water from the point of view of chemical toxicity.
