Abstract
BACKGROUND The goal of medical imaging is not only to identify the entity "hepatocellular adenoma," but to detect typical magnetic resonance (MR) patterns of the subtypes so that lesions with a higher malignant transformation rate could be differentiated from those that should just be controlled. PURPOSE To evaluate the differentiation between subtypes of hepatocellular adenomas using hepatobiliary specific contrast agent (Gd-EOB-DTPA) in MR imaging. MATERIAL/METHODS A total of 11 patients with 39 lesions with histologically proven hepatocellular adenomas were evaluated. Of the, 34 were inflammatory hepatocellular adenomas (IHCA) and 5 were HNF1α adenomas. No β-catenin-mutated adenoma was found. In all patients, a standard protocol considering the guidelines of the international consensus conference of Gd-EOB-DTPA was performed in a 1.5-T scanner. Besides a qualitative analysis of all sequences, we measured the quantitative signal intensity (SI) ratio in all examinations. RESULTS Qualitative analysis showed that best sequences for differentiation of HNF1α adenomas from IHCA were T1-weighted (T1W) precontrast (P = 0.03) and portalvenous phase (P < 0.0001) as well as arterial phase (P = 0.002). All adenomas were hypointense in hepatobiliary phase (15 min). The quantitative analyses of the SI ratio and of lesion-to-liver contrast (LLC) ratio show statistically significant differences in T1W precontrast (SI: P = 0.035; LLC: P = 0.049) and portalvenous phase (SI: P = 0.002; LLC: P = 0.002). CONCLUSION Subtyping of hepatocellular adenomas using Gd-EOB-DTPA is possible due to qualitative and quantitative analyses regarding T1W precontrast and portalvenous phase. In addition, the SI ratio and liver-to-lesion contrast ratio in the arterial phase gave additional qualitative information for differentiation.

Abstract
A 47-year-old woman was referred to our department for a hepatic mass. She denied history of hepatitis or alcohol consumption and regular oral contraceptive use, except for the emergency contraceptive pill taken once a decade ago. Hepatitis B surface antigen and anti-hepatitis C antibody were negative, α-fetoprotein was within normal limit. CT scan revealed an enormous mass measuring 26.0×16 5×13 0 cm that almost totally replaced the right hepatic lobe. The neoplasm was completely resected and pathologically diagnosed as hepatic adenoma. Literature review indicates this is the largest hepatic adenoma reported so far. At the same time, clinical examination also revealed a hepatic mass in the patient's 42-year-old brother, which was pathologically confirmed as hepatic adenoma, too. He denied history of anabolic steroid use. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed the subtypes of both tumors as the inflammatory hepatic adenoma. Literature review indicates this is the first report of synchronous hepatic adenomas in siblings.

Abstract
Hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) are composed of four molecular subgroups: mutations inactivating the HNF1A gene; the inflammatory phenotype with mutations of different genes leading to STAT3 activation; the activation of β-catenin by mutations in exon 3; among β-HCA, half display both inflammatory and β-catenin-activated phenotypes; and the unclassified tumors. The identification of these subtypes by MRI and immunohistochemistry on tissue is considered as a major criterion to manage patients. Of particular relevance is the identification of the β-catenin-mutated group due to its high risk of malignant transformation. In spite of this progress, the classification has not gained recognition among surgeons. It is hoped that by working as a multidisciplinary team, including surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and molecular biologists, patients will be managed more rationally. In this article, we will present known and new data, well accepted and that which is still controversial. The progress made in the field of HCA in the last 12 years, whether in epidemiology, diagnosis (clinical, pathology, imaging) or management, is related in one way or another to molecular advances.

Abstract
This practical atlas aims to help liver and non liver pathologists to recognize benign hepatocellular nodules on resected specimen. Macroscopic and microscopic views together with immunohistochemical stains illustrate typical and atypical aspects of focal nodular hyperplasia and of hepatocellular adenoma, including hepatocellular adenomas subtypes with references to clinical and imaging data. Each step is important to make a correct diagnosis. The specimen including the nodule and the non-tumoral liver should be sliced, photographed and all different looking areas adequately sampled for paraffin inclusion. Routine histology includes HE, trichrome and cytokeratin 7. Immunohistochemistry includes glutamine synthase and according to the above results additional markers such as liver fatty acid binding protein, C reactive protein and beta catenin may be realized to differentiate focal nodular hyperplasia from hepatocellular adenoma subtypes. Clues for differential diagnosis and pitfalls are explained and illustrated.
