Advances in Detection of Antibiotic Pollutants in Aqueous Media Using Molecular Imprinting Technique-A Review

Antibiotics constitute one of the emerging categories of persistent organic pollutants, characterised by their expansion of resistant pathogens. Antibiotic pollutants create a major public health challenge, with already identifiable detrimental effects on human and animal health. A fundamental aspect of controlling and preventing the spread of pollutants is the continuous screening and monitoring of environmental samples. Molecular imprinting is a state-of-the-art technique for designing robust biomimetic receptors called molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), which mimic natural biomolecules in target-selective recognition. When integrated with an appropriate sensor transducer, MIP demonstrates a potential for the needed environmental monitoring, thus justifying the observed rise in interest in this field of research. This review examines scientific interventions within the last decade on the determination of antibiotic water pollutants using MIP receptors interfaced with label-free sensing platforms, with an expanded focus on optical, piezoelectric, and electrochemical systems. Following these, the review evaluates the analytical performance of outstanding MIP-based sensors for environmentally significant antibiotics, while highlighting the importance of computational chemistry in functional monomer selection and the strategies for signal amplification and performance improvement. Lastly, the review points out the future trends in antibiotic MIP research, as it transits from a proof of concept to the much demanded commercially available entity.

Recent Advances in Sensing Applications of Molecularly Imprinted Photonic Crystals

Photonic crystals (PhCs) with a brightly colored structure are novel materials and are widely used in chemical and biological sensing. Combining PhCs with molecular imprinting technology (MIT), the molecularly imprinted PhC (MIPC) sensors are fabricated, which can specifically recognize the target molecules. Aside from high sensitivity and selectivity, the MIPC sensors could recognize the naked eye detection because of its optical properties. In this review, an overview of recent advances in sensing applications of MIPC sensors including the responsive mechanisms, application in environmental monitoring, and the application to human health were illustrated. The MIPC sensors all responded to the analytes specifically and also showed high sensitivity in real samples, which provided a method to realize the rapid, convenient, naked eye, and real-time detection. Furthermore, the current limitations and potential future directions of MIPC sensors were also discussed.

Effects of prepolymerization on surface molecularly imprinted polymer for rapid separation and analysis of sulfonamides in water

This work systematically investigated the effects of prepolymerization on the property of multi-templates surface molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), which was utilized to quickly and simultaneously separate and detect six sulfonamides (sulfadiazine, sulfathiazole, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole and sulfadoxine) in real waters. The MIPs were prepared using the six sulfonamides as the templates, mesoporous silica supported onto the surface of magnetic graphene oxide as the carrier and 4-vinylbenzoic as the functional monomer, with and without prepolymerization of templates with functional monomer. The preparation and adsorption conditions were optimized. It was found that the adsorption capacities of the selected six sulfonamides on the MIP (pre) prepared with prepolymerization were apparently higher than those on the MIP (no pre) synthesized without prepolymerization. Subsequently, the MIPs were utilized as adsorbents for SPE of these sulfonamides, and coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the determination of sulfonamides. The developed analytical method showed outstanding applicability for the detection of trace sulfonamides in real water samples. The spiked recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the six sulfonamides using MIP (no pre) and MIP (pre) were 73.34-99.43% and 87.37-102.34%, 2.28-7.77% and 3.18-6.49%, respectively.

Visual test for the presence of the illegal additive ethyl anthranilate by using a photonic crystal test strip

A test strip has been developed for the rapid detection of the illegal additive ethyl anthranilate (EA) in wine. The detection scheme is based on a combination of photonic crystal based detection and molecular imprinting based recognition. The resulting molecularly imprinted photonic crystal (MIPC) undergoes a gradual color change from green to yellow to red upon binding of EA. A semi-quantitative colorimetric card can be used to estimate the content of EA, either visually or by making use of an optical fiber spectrometer. A linear relationship was found between the Bragg diffraction peak shift and the concentration of EA in the range from 0.1 mM to 10 mM. The detection limit is 10 μM. The test has been successfully used to screening for the presence of EA in grape wine. The test strip is selective, and can be re-used after re-activation.
