Abstract
A 12 week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary zinc levels on Heteropneustes fossilis. Triplicate groups of fish were fed isoproteic (CP; 400 g/kg) and isocaloric (GE; 17.89 kJ/g) diets increasing levels of zinc (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 mg/kg) achieved by supplementing zinc sulphate heptahydrate to basal diet. Analysed concentrations of zinc in diets were 10.68, 15.83, 21.34, 26.74, 30.61, 34.91 and 41.34 mg/kg. Growth indices increased linearly (P<0.05) up to 26.74 mg/kg Zn. The protein and ash content of whole body also improved significantly up to 26.74 mg/kg Zn. Whole body fat content showed inverse pattern. Haematological parameters also showed an improving trend with the increase in dietary zinc up to 26.74 mg/kg and then levelled off. Activities of antioxidant enzymes were improved with the increase in dietary zinc level up to 26.74 mg/kg followed by no significant change (P>0.05). Serum lysozyme activity also exhibited the similar pattern. Immune response in terms of the activities of lysozyme, alkaline phosphatase and myeloperoxidase was also improved with the increase in dietary zinc levels up to 26.74 mg/kg. Dietary zinc levels affected significantly the whole body as well as vertebrae mineralization. Broken-line regression analysis of weight gain, vertebrae zinc activity, serum superoxide dismutase and protease activity against increasing amounts of dietary zinc revealed that the inclusion of zinc in diet in the range of 26.82-29.84 mg/kg is optimum for growth, haematological indices, antioxidant status, immune response and tissue mineralization in fingerling H. fossilis. The information obtained from present study would be helpful in formulating the zinc-balanced commercial feeds to improve the growth and health status of this important fish, thus contributing to aquaculture production and strengthening the food security.

Abstract
The results of electrochemical and SOD activity measurements of such copper(II) complexes of terminally protected multihistidine peptides that may mimic the active site of CuZnSOD enzyme are submitted and completed with solution equilibrium studies of some copper(II)-ligand systems. The equilibrium data confirm that the thermodynamic stabilities increase with the increasing number of histidyl residues in the amino acid sequence, the stability order, however, can be finely tuned by the number and quality of amino acids between histidine residues. Based on the cyclic voltammetric studies we concluded that the formal reduction potential values of imidazole nitrogen coordinated complexes decrease with the increasing number of imidazole donor atoms in the coordination sphere. However, the redox parameters of [CuH-1L]+ and [CuH-2L] complexes containing amide nitrogen coordination can be determined as well. All formal potential values of [CuL]2+, [CuH-1L]+ and [CuH-2L] complexes fall in the middle potential range of SOD activity. Finally, after the detailed analysis of species distribution curves based upon the equilibrium data SOD activity of copper(II) containing systems at two pH (pH=6.8 and 7.4) were determined. The imidazole coordinated [CuL]2+ complexes of the multihistidine peptide containing the HXH sequence exhibit the most significant activity, but the presence of amide nitrogen coordinated species with slightly distorted geometry could considerably contribute to the SOD activity.

Abstract
To understand the electron transfer mechanisms (outer versus inner sphere) of catalytic superoxide dismutation via a Cu(ii/i) redox couple such as occur in the enzyme copper-zinc superoxide dismutase, the Cu(ii/i) complexes [(L1)2Cu](ClO4)2·CH3CN, (1·CH3CN) and [(L1)2Cu](ClO4), (2) supported by a bis-N2Sthioether ligand, 2-pyridyl-N-(2'-methylthiophenyl)methyleneimine (L1) have been synthesized and structurally characterised. Both 1 and 2 display the same cyclic voltammogram (CV) featuring a quasireversible response at E1/2 = +0.33 V vs. SCE that falls in the SOD potential window of -0.04 V to +0.99 V. These complexes catalytically dismutate superoxide radicals at 298 K in aqueous medium (the IC50 for 1 is 2.15 μM). Electronic absorption spectra (233 K and 298 K), FTIR, ESI mass spectra, CV (233 K and 298 K) and DFT calculations collectively indicate formation of [(L1)2Cu(O2˙(-))](+), [(L1)2Cu(O2(2-))] and [(L1)2Cu(OOH(-))](+) species and help to elucidate the electron transfer mechanism for the SOD function of 1 and 2. Once O2˙(-) binds to Cu(II) (evident at 233 K), the first step of the catalytic cycle (Cu(II) + O2˙(-)→ Cu(I) + O2) does not follow but the second step (Cu(I) + O2˙(-) + 2H(+)→ H2O2 + Cu(II)) does follow. Therefore, the catalytic disproportionation of superoxide radicals via1 and 2 at 298 K indicates that the first and second steps of the catalytic cycle proceed through outer and inner sphere electron transfer mechanisms, respectively. Feasibility of the first step to occur in pure aprotic solvent (where 18-crown-6-ether is used to solubilise KO2) was tested and also supports the same notion of the electron transfer mechanisms as stated above.

Abstract
Synthetic superoxide dismutase mimetics have emerged as a potential novel class of drugs for the treatment of oxidative stress related diseases. Among these agents, metal complexes with macrocyclic ligands constitute an important group. In this work we synthesized five macrocyclic copper(II) complexes and evaluated their ability to scavenge the superoxide anions generated by the xanthine-xanthine oxidase system. Two different endpoints were used, the nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction assay (colorimetric method) and the dihydroethidium (DHE) oxidation assay (fluorimetric method). IC(50) values in the low micromolar range were found in four out of five macrocyclic complexes studied, demonstrating their effective ability to scavenge the superoxide anion. The IC(50) values obtained with the NBT assay for the macrocyclic copper(II) complexes, were consistently higher, approximately threefold, than those obtained with the DHE assay. Spectroscopic and electrochemical studies were performed in order to correlate the structural features of the complexes with their superoxide scavenger activity. Cytotoxicity assays were also performed using the MTT method in V79 mammalian cells and we found that the complexes, in the range of concentrations tested in the superoxide scavenging assays were not considerably toxic. In summary, some of the presented macrocyclic copper(II) complexes, specially those with a high stability constant and low IC(50), appear to be promising superoxide scavenger agents, and should be considered for further biological assays.

Abstract
Two bis(1-pyrazolyl)alkane ligands, bis(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)methane and bis(4-iodo-3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)methane, and their copper(II) complexes, bis(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)methanedinitratocopper(II) [CuL1(NO3)2] and bis(4-iodo-3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)methanedinitratocopper(II) [CuL2(NO3)2] x 2H2O, were prepared. Physiochemical properties of the copper(II) complexes were studied by spectroscopic (UV-vis, IR, EPR) techniques and cyclic voltammetry. Spectroscopic analysis revealed a 1:1 stoichiometry of ligand:copper(II) ion and a bidentate coordination mode for the nitrate ions in both of the complexes. According to experimental and theoretical ab initio data, the copper(II) ion is located in an octahedral hexacoordinated environment. Both complexes were able to catalyze the dismutation of superoxide anion (O2*-) (pH 7.5) and decomposition of H2O2 (pH 7.5) and peroxynitrite (pH 10.9). In addition, both complexes exhibited superoxide dismutase (SOD) like activity toward extracellular and intracellular reactive oxygen species produced by activated human neutrophils in whole blood. Thus, these complexes represent useful SOD mimetics with a broad range of antioxidant activity toward a variety of reactive oxidants.

Abstract
Reactions of [Mo(CO)4(pip)2] with pyridine-2-carbaldehyde and the appropriate amino ester or amino acid produce complexes with chelated pyridylimino ligands bearing, respectively, an ester (1) or carboxylate (2a,b, 4, 5a,b) pendant arm, the structures of which have been determined by X-ray crystallography. In the case of alpha-amino acids, the resulting imino carboxylate complexes are unstable towards decarboxylation, this being complete for (R)-2-phenylglycine. The products of decarboxylation 3a-c were isolated and characterized, including X-ray structure determinations for and . In contrast, the derivatives of beta-alanine (4) and 3- and 4-aminobenzoic acids (5a,b) are stable towards decarboxylation. The structure determinations show that the pyridyliminocarboxylate complexes crystallize as salts with piperidinium cations, forming hydrogen-bonded ion-pair dimers featuring twelve- or eight-membered rings. Protonation of carboxylate complexes with 2 M HCl in CH2Cl2/water yields the corresponding neutral complexes 6a,b containing a free carboxylic acid functionality.

Abstract
Ternary copper(II) complexes involving polypyridyl ligands in the coordination sphere of composition [Cu(tpy)(phen)](ClO4)2 (1), [Cu(tpy)(bipy)](ClO4)2 (2), [Cu(tptz)(phen)](ClO4)2 (3) and [Cu(tptz)(bipy)](BF4)2 (4) where tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, tptz = 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline and bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, X-band e.p.r. spectroscopy and electronic spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray of (1) has revealed the presence of a distorted square pyramidal geometry in the complex. Magnetic susceptibility measurements at room temperature were in the range of 1.77-1.81 BM. SOD and antimicrobial activities of these complexes were also measured. Crystal data of (1): P-1, a = 9.3010(7) A, b = 9.7900(6) A, c = 16.4620(6) A, Vc = 1342.73(14) A3, Z = 4. The bond distance of CuN in square base is 2+/-0.04 A.
